The principal stars (正星) are the group of stars that play the leading role in a Tử Vi (Vietnamese astrology) chart. In the common understanding, the system of principal stars consists of 14 stars, divided into groups such as Tử Vi, Thiên Phủ, Thái Dương, Thái Âm, Vũ Khúc, Thiên Đồng, Liêm Trinh, Tham Lang, Cự Môn, Thiên Tướng, Thiên Lương, Thất Sát and Phá Quân. Each principal star carries its own character, and when it takes up position in a palace it shapes the tendencies of personality, temperament and direction of movement of that palace.
How do principal stars differ from supporting stars and malefic stars?
The principal star is the "axis" of the palace, deciding the essential nature and the leading direction. Supporting stars (such as Tả Phù, Hữu Bật, Văn Xương, Văn Khúc) and malefic stars (such as Kình Dương, Đà La, Hỏa Tinh, Linh Tinh) play a supplementary or disruptive role, changing the shading but not replacing the leading role. When interpreting, students usually identify the principal star first, then consider the supporting and malefic stars to refine the conclusion.
Why is it necessary to consider the principal star palace by palace?
A chart has 12 palaces such as Mệnh, Thân, Phu Thê, Quan Lộc, Phụ Mẫu and Phúc Đức. The same principal star, when it sits in a different palace, gives a different meaning. For example, Tử Vi in the Mệnh palace speaks of leadership temperament, while Tử Vi in the Phu Thê palace speaks of the type of partner. Therefore, interpreting a principal star must be placed in the context of the palace and of the whole chart.
Do the principal stars decide the whole of a person's fate?
No. The principal stars are only one part, though a very important one. It is necessary to combine them with their position as miếu, vượng, đắc or hãm, with the stars sharing the palace, the tam hợp, the xung chiếu, and factors such as the Thân palace, the major periods and the minor periods. Tử Vi Đẩu Số is traditional knowledge of a consultative nature, not yet verified by science, so it should not be used to replace practical decisions.
How can principal stars be distinguished from other ways of naming them?
"Sao chính tinh" is another way of referring to the principal stars. It should be distinguished from "chính diệu" in some documents, which may refer to a similar group of leading stars but whose usage is not entirely consistent. Beginners should stick to the common list of 14 principal stars in order to avoid confusion with supporting stars, malefic stars and miscellaneous stars.

The principal stars are the stars that decide the framework of the chart; the remaining stars are supplementary. The configuration is considered according to the principal star located in the Mệnh palace, and when the Mệnh palace has no principal star, the stars in the opposite Thiên Di palace are borrowed.
