What Stars Make Up the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng Set in Tử Vi and How Is It Read?

TL;DR: In Vietnamese Tử Vi (Vietnamese astrology), the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set comprises four major stars, Tử Vi (Purple Star), Thiên Phủ (Celestial Treasury), Vũ Khúc (Military Song) and Thiên Tướng (Celestial General); when all four come together across the three palaces Mệnh, Tài Bạch (Wealth) and Quan Lộc (Career), it is called the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng configuration, and by the rules of placement it can only occur in the three-harmony groups Dần Ngọ Tuất or Thân Tý Thìn. Nguyễn Phát Lộc's Tử Vi tổng hợp sets the condition that all four stars be in favourable positions or better; Việt Viêm Tử's Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học also examines the natal Five Elements in relation to the star sharing the Mệnh palace.

What is the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set and which stars does it include?

The Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set is the name for four main stars commonly read together in Tử Vi: Tử Vi, Thiên Phủ, Vũ Khúc and Thiên Tướng. When all four gather in the three palaces Mệnh, Tài Bạch and Quan Lộc, the books call it the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng pattern. This article presents the placement and the reading as taught in Vietnamese Tử Vi, based on Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử, Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc and Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang; where the books differ, each is reported separately.

These four stars belong to two different star clusters but hold fixed positions relative to one another. Việt Viêm Tử records that the Tử Vi cluster has six stars (Tử Vi, Thiên Cơ, Thái Dương, Vũ Khúc, Thiên Đồng, Liêm Trinh) and the Thiên Phủ cluster has eight (Thiên Phủ, Thái Âm, Tham Lang, Cự Môn, Thiên Tướng, Thiên Lương, Thất Sát, Phá Quân)[1]. Vũ Khúc belongs to the Tử Vi cluster, Thiên Phủ and Thiên Tướng to the Thiên Phủ cluster, so where the four stand is decided entirely by the position of Tử Vi.

How are the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng stars placed?

Placing the Tử Vi and Thiên Phủ clusters

According to Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, to know which palace Thiên Phủ occupies, one must cross-reference the position of Tử Vi. The book states: "In the Dần and Thân palaces, Tử Vi and Thiên Phủ always share the same palace"[1]. For the Tỵ and Hợi palaces, if Tử Vi is in Tỵ then Thiên Phủ is in Hợi, and vice versa. Other pairs are set out in a reference table, for example Tử Vi in Mùi means Thiên Phủ in Dậu, Tử Vi in Ngọ means Thiên Phủ in Tuất.

After Tử Vi and Thiên Phủ are placed, the remaining stars of each cluster follow in a fixed order. Vũ Khúc stands four palaces from Tử Vi going backward and Thiên Tướng four palaces from Thiên Phủ going forward, so Vũ Khúc is always in tam hợp with Tử Vi and Thiên Tướng always in tam hợp with Thiên Phủ.

When do the four stars gather to form the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng pattern?

Conditions for gathering

Việt Viêm Tử defines a pattern by the three palaces Mệnh, Tài and Quan, and gives the example of the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng pattern in the three palaces Dần, Ngọ, Tuất: Tử Vi in Ngọ is miếu địa, Thiên Phủ in Tuất is miếu địa, Vũ Khúc in Dần is hãm địa and Thiên Tướng in Dần is đắc địa[1]. By the placement rules, the four stars stand wholly within one tam hợp only when Tử Vi is in a yang palace (Tý, Dần, Thìn, Ngọ, Thân, Tuất), and that tam hợp is then always Dần Ngọ Tuất or Thân Tý Thìn. On brightness, Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên ranks differently: Vũ Khúc in Dần is vượng địa, Thiên Tướng in Dần is miếu địa, and Thiên Phủ in Tuất is vượng địa[3].

Of this position the book writes: "when the Tử Phủ pair is in the three palaces Dần, Ngọ, Tuất, the good is truly at its peak"[1], and it holds that a Thổ mệnh person standing with Tử Vi or Thiên Phủ here fits the pattern best.

Other tam hợp positions

The second position is the Thân Tý Thìn tam hợp. Việt Viêm Tử writes that a Thổ mệnh person standing with Tử Vi and Thiên Phủ in Thân fits the pattern, a Kim mệnh person fits it only when standing with Vũ Khúc in Thìn, and a Thủy mệnh person seated in Tý has the best of the whole Tử Phủ pattern, because the Thân Tý Thìn tam hợp belongs to Thủy[1].

The reason the book gives is that in the other tam hợp "Thiên Tướng cannot be as miếu địa as Thiên Tướng residing in Tý"[1]; hence, by the book, a Thủy mệnh person meeting Thiên Tướng in Tý fares better than one meeting Thiên Tướng in Dần or in Thìn.

Why do some books call the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng pattern the best?

Discussing the rescuing power of the stars, Nguyễn Phát Lộc writes: "The Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng pattern is regarded by Tử Vi scholarship as the best among patterns"[2]. The reason the book gives is that each star of the set specialises in countering one type of hung tinh or sát tinh, so this is perhaps the most complete pattern for dispelling misfortune, "but on condition that all four stars must be đắc địa or above"[2].

The same book, where it discusses the patterns, is more reserved: "People tend to regard the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng pattern as superior to the other five. This view is partly reasonable, but on reflection somewhat excessive"[2]; for the author the patterns are on a par if each has all its stars and all are đắc địa or above. Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang, for his part, ranks Tử, Phủ, Vũ, Tướng among the upper patterns when the stars are miếu, vượng or đắc địa and are joined by Tả, Hữu, Xương, Khúc, Khôi, Việt, Long, Phượng, Đào, Hồng, Khoa, Quyền, Lộc[3].

What do the books say about each star in the set?

Tử Vi and Thiên Phủ

Việt Viêm Tử treats this as the pattern of people who rise high because it contains "Tử Vi, the yang emperor star, and Thiên Phủ, the yin emperor star"[1]. By the book, the Tử Phủ pair badly needs the two stars Tả Phù and Hữu Bật in support, and of the three palaces Mệnh weighs most, then Quan Lộc, then Tài Bạch. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên lists Thiên Phủ as governing wealth and authority[3].

Vũ Khúc in the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set

Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên classes Vũ Khúc as a tài tinh[3]. The verse commentary of Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records of Vũ Khúc:

  • Vũ Khúc at Mệnh in Thìn, Tuất, Sửu or Mùi, sharing the palace with Văn Xương and Văn Khúc: the book calls it the "xuất Tướng nhập Tướng" pattern, accomplished in both civil and martial arts.
  • Vũ Khúc with Thiên Khôi and Thiên Việt seated in a miếu or vượng place: "a person with a special talent for holding financial posts"[1].

Thiên Tướng in the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set

Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên lists Thiên Tướng as governing office and good works[3]. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, in its discussion of the Thiên Di palace, records of Thiên Tướng: "Going out, one is supported by noble people"[1].

What factors must be considered when reading the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set?

Each star's miếu/hãm position

Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học instructs that the miếu or hãm standing of the stars forming the pattern must be determined. For the same Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng pattern in Dần Ngọ Tuất, the book holds that Kim mệnh and Thủy mệnh people fare worse than a Thổ mệnh person standing with Tử Vi or Thiên Phủ, since those two stars are miếu địa "while Vũ Khúc and Thiên Tướng cannot compare, being already in a hãm địa place"[1].

Ngũ hành bản mệnh

Việt Viêm Tử weighs the ngũ hành bản mệnh against the star that the Mệnh palace stands with[1]:

  • Thổ mệnh: fits best when standing with Tử Vi or Thiên Phủ; the Dần Ngọ Tuất tam hợp belongs to Hỏa and so suits a Thổ mệnh person.
  • Kim mệnh: fits when standing with Vũ Khúc, though by the book the pattern is already weaker.
  • Thủy mệnh: fits when standing with Thiên Tướng, best with Thiên Tướng in Tý, in the Thân Tý Thìn tam hợp that belongs to Thủy.

The book also mentions the case of a Thủy mệnh person whose Mệnh does not share a palace with Thiên Tướng: this is then only "a pattern that borrows the outline of Tử Phủ", and any prominence, by the book, is "momentary and cannot last"[1].

Accompanying phụ tinh and sát tinh

Nguyễn Phát Lộc writes that Tử Vi and Thiên Phủ in one palace can only hold Địa Không or Địa Kiếp in check for a time, a contest that "tends to be evenly matched and is certainly very hard"; with the whole Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set, "the hope of rescue will be greater"[2].

The books define the pattern by the three palaces Mệnh, Tài Bạch and Quan Lộc. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên also describes an "extraordinary pattern": Mệnh has Tử, Phủ, Vũ, Tướng gathered, Thân has Sát, Phá, Liêm, Tham gathered, and all are miếu, vượng or đắc địa[3].

Notes when interpreting the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set

Seeing four stars is not enough to conclude wealth and status

Tử Vi tổng hợp stresses the condition "all four stars must be đắc địa or above"[2]. If one only sees the four stars gathered without checking miếu/hãm, ngũ hành bản mệnh and phụ tinh, the interpreter easily reaches a distorted conclusion.

When the four stars do not all gather

Tử Vi tổng hợp requires that a pattern "have all the stars of the pattern"; with a star missing the book counts it as incomplete[2]. By the placement rules, Tử Vi and Thiên Phủ share a palace only in Dần and Thân; when Tử Vi is in a yin palace (Sửu, Mão, Tỵ, Mùi, Dậu, Hợi), the three palaces Mệnh, Tài and Quan cannot hold all four stars, so the full Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng pattern does not form.

Summary of how to read the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set

When encountering a chart with the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set, the interpreter should follow these steps:

  • Step one: Cast the chart and see whether the four stars all gather in the three palaces Mệnh, Tài Bạch and Quan Lộc.
  • Step two: Look up the miếu, vượng, đắc or hãm standing of each star in the book being used, since the books do not rank them identically.
  • Step three: See which star the Mệnh palace stands with and compare it with the ngũ hành bản mệnh as in Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học.
  • Step four: See which supporting stars and sát tinh join, as each book lists them.

Both Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học and Tử Vi tổng hợp attach conditions to this pattern: all the stars present, the stars đắc địa or above, and a fit with the bản mệnh. This is the reading of the Tử Vi books, not a scientific conclusion about human fate or personality.

Frequently asked questions

Which stars make up the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set?

The Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set consists of four major stars: Tử Vi (Purple Star), Thiên Phủ (Celestial Treasury), Vũ Khúc (Military Song) and Thiên Tướng (Celestial General). Tử Vi and Vũ Khúc belong to the Tử Vi constellation (six stars), while Thiên Phủ and Thiên Tướng belong to the Thiên Phủ constellation (eight stars).

When is the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng set considered to be well formed?

According to Nguyễn Phát Lộc's book Tử Vi tổng hợp, the Tử Phủ Vũ Tướng configuration is only truly good when all four stars are in favourable positions or better. In addition, one must consider whether the natal Five Elements fit the three-harmony group, and the minor stars and malefic stars that join in.

Why do Tử Vi and Thiên Phủ share the same palace only at Dần and Thân?

According to Việt Viêm Tử's Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, Thiên Phủ is placed opposite Tử Vi across the Dần Thân axis, so the two stars meet only when Tử Vi is at Dần or at Thân; at Tỵ and Hợi the two stars face each other from opposite palaces.
