What is Yong Shen and where does it come from?

Yong Shen (用神) is a core term in BaZi Four Pillars, referring to the element or Five Elements factor considered most necessary to adjust, remedy, and balance the entire destiny structure. This concept is tied to the principles of yin-yang and the five elements and the idea of moderation and harmony in Eastern culture. When a Four Pillars chart is skewed toward a certain element, Yong Shen is the element that helps bring the destiny structure back to a more balanced state.

How is Yong Shen determined?

Determining Yong Shen usually begins with assessing the strength or weakness of the Day Master (day stem). Depending on whether the Day Master is strong or weak, the interpreter chooses the element that has a remedial effect: if the Day Master is weak, an element that generates and supports is needed; if the Day Master is strong, an element that drains or controls is needed. In addition, one must consider the overall balance of the Four Pillars, the presence of elements in the heavenly stems, earthly branches, hidden stems, and the relationships of generation, control, punishment, clash, harm, and combination. Therefore, determining Yong Shen is the most important and also the most complex step in BaZi destiny analysis.

How is Yong Shen used in interpretation?

After determining Yong Shen, the interpreter uses it as the main axis to evaluate aspects of life such as career, wealth, marriage, and health. Elements considered beneficial to Yong Shen are often encouraged to be supplemented through colors, directions, occupations, and living environment. Conversely, elements unfavorable to Yong Shen are considered to be limited. However, this is traditional knowledge for reference, not scientifically verified, so it should not be seen as the sole basis for making important life decisions.

Distinguishing Yong Shen from easily confused terms

Yong Shen is often confused with Xi Shen (Favorable God) and Ji Shen (Unfavorable God). Xi Shen is the element that supports and benefits Yong Shen, while Ji Shen is the element that obstructs and weakens Yong Shen. Some people also confuse Yong Shen with the Day Master, but the Day Master is only the day stem representing the person, while Yong Shen is the element needed to adjust the whole chart. In addition, Yong Shen differs from Shen Sha, because Shen Sha are symbolic stars, while Yong Shen is a foundational Five Elements factor.
