What is Dụng Thần and where does it come from?
Dụng Thần (用神) is a core term in Bát Tự Tứ Trụ (BaZi, the Four Pillars of Destiny), referring to the element or Five Elements factor considered most necessary to adjust, remedy and balance the entire destiny chart. This concept is tied to the principle of yin and yang and the Five Elements, and to the Eastern cultural ideal of moderation and harmony. When a set of four pillars leans toward a particular element, Dụng Thần is the element that helps pull the chart back toward a more balanced state.
How is Dụng Thần determined?
Determining Dụng Thần usually begins with assessing the strength or weakness of the Day Master (the day stem). Depending on whether the Day Master is strong or weak, the interpreter chooses the element that serves as a remedy: if the Day Master is weak, an element that supports and nourishes it is needed; if the Day Master is strong, an element that drains or controls it is needed. In addition, one must consider the overall balance of the four pillars, the presence of the elements among the heavenly stems, earthly branches and hidden stems, and the relationships of generation and control, punishment, clash, harm and combination. Determining Dụng Thần is therefore the most important and also the most complex step in BaZi destiny analysis.
How is Dụng Thần used in interpretation?
Once Dụng Thần has been determined, the interpreter uses it as the central axis for assessing aspects of life such as career, wealth, marriage and health. Elements considered beneficial to Dụng Thần are often encouraged to be supplemented through colors, directions, occupations and living environments. Conversely, elements unfavorable to Dụng Thần are considered best limited. However, this is traditional knowledge of a reference nature, not yet verified by science, so it should not be treated as the sole basis for making important decisions in life.
Distinguishing Dụng Thần from easily confused terms
Dụng Thần is often confused with Hỷ Thần and Kỵ Thần. Hỷ Thần is the element that supports and benefits Dụng Thần, while Kỵ Thần is the element that obstructs and weakens Dụng Thần. Some people also confuse Dụng Thần with the Day Master, but the Day Master is merely the day stem representing the person themselves, whereas Dụng Thần is the element needed to adjust the whole chart. In addition, Dụng Thần differs from Thần Sát, because Thần Sát are symbolic stars, while Dụng Thần is a foundational Five Elements factor.
