What is Bệnh Dược?
Bệnh Dược (Illness and Remedy) is a principle for reading Bát Tự destiny set out by Zhang Nan (style name Shen Feng, Ming dynasty) in Shen Feng Tong Kao, in the section on the illness and remedy theory: the "illness" is the character in the birth chart that harms the deity one needs, and the "remedy" is another character that removes that character, with the aim of moving toward balance of the Five Elements.

What is the Bệnh Dược (Disease and Remedy) principle?
What is Bệnh Dược in Bát Tự (BaZi)?
Bệnh Dược (病藥) is a principle of fate analysis in Bát Tự (BaZi), made up of two parts: "bệnh" (disease) and "dược" (remedy). According to Zhang Nan (courtesy name Shen Feng, Ming dynasty), in Shen Feng Tong Kao, in the section on the disease and remedy theory, "bệnh" is the character in the chart that harms the element one needs, while "dược" is another character that removes that character. The book cites the old saying "having a disease is what makes one noble; without injury one is not remarkable" (hữu bệnh phương vi quý, vô thương bất thị kỳ) and treats the disease and remedy theory as the first key when analyzing a chart. Yuan Hai Zi Ping also has a line with the same meaning: "without injury, no nobility; with disease, the remarkable."
"Bệnh" refers to imbalance, a flaw or a skewed configuration in the chart, for example one element being far too strong, one element far too weak, or harsh clashes among the pillars. "Dược" refers to the Useful God, meaning the element or stem-branch that can adjust, control or supplement that flaw. The goal is to bring the chart back to a state of relative balance, and from there to read the fortunes as more favorable.
What is the origin of Bệnh Dược, and how is it used?
The disease and remedy theory is tied to Zhang Nan of the Ming dynasty. He recounted that when he analyzed charts by the principle of central harmony and by the wealth and officer stars, "not even one or two in ten came true," and only after he grasped the disease and remedy theory did eight or nine out of ten come true. The specific usage according to Shen Feng Tong Kao:
- Taking Wealth as the useful element and encountering Peer (Bi Jian) is the disease; encountering Officer and Seven Killings is the remedy.
- Taking the Eating God and Hurting Officer as the useful element and encountering Resource is the disease; encountering Wealth is the remedy.
- When the four pillars are pure Earth, then for a day stem of Water this is a heavy Seven Killings, and for a day stem of Metal it is "thick earth burying metal": Earth is the disease, and in both cases Wood is welcomed as the remedy.
When analyzing a chart, the practitioner usually determines whether the Day Master is strong or weak, then looks for the main "disease" (for example: a weak self with Wealth and Officer far too strong, or a strong self with no outlet to release energy). From that "disease," one chooses the "remedy," the element that needs supplementing or controlling. The Useful God chosen this way is often called the "disease and remedy useful god."
How is Bệnh Dược distinguished from concepts easily confused with it?
Bệnh Dược is easily confused with "Climate Adjustment" (adjusting the seasonal climate) or "Mediation" (resolving clashes between two elements). The difference: Bệnh Dược focuses on identifying one specific flaw in the chart and then choosing the medicine, while Climate Adjustment emphasizes the factor of the birth season, and Mediation emphasizes a bridge between opposing elements. In practice these principles can be combined, but Bệnh Dược stresses the idea of "where there is disease, apply medicine."
What should be kept in mind when applying Bệnh Dược?
Determining the "disease" and the "remedy" requires experience and a holistic view of the entire chart, not just a few stems and branches. This is traditional knowledge of a reference nature, not verified by science; readers should treat it as a cultural perspective, and should not take it as a diagnosis or as a substitute for personal effort.
How do the different ways of applying Bệnh Dược differ?
The three approaches below are ways practitioners apply the principle, not named schools, and are not tied to any particular book:
- Taking a weak self as the disease: Treating a weak self as the main "disease," using Resource or Peer as the "remedy" to support the Day Master and help rebalance the weak position.
- Taking a strong self with no outlet as the disease: Treating a strong self with no outlet to release energy as the "disease," using Wealth and Officer or the Eating God and Hurting Officer as the "remedy" to drain or restrain some of that strength.
- Considering it together with Climate Adjustment: Treating the factor of the birth season (cold and dry, damp and hot) as the "disease" alongside the strength or weakness of the self, and choosing a "remedy" that both adjusts the climate and balances the Five Elements.
