Altar Feng Shui: Principles for Auspicious Arrangement
In East Asian culture, the altar is not only a place to express reverence to ancestors but also the spiritual center of the home. Arranging the altar according to feng shui principles is believed to influence the health, wealth, and peace of the family.
Ideal Placement
The placement of the altar is the most critical factor for the flow of positive energy.
- Solemn and Clean Location: The altar should be placed in a clean, airy, and solemn area. A dedicated worship room is ideal. If not available, the living room, as the most formal shared space, is the next best option.
- Solid Backing: The altar should have its back against a solid wall, symbolizing strong support for the family. Avoid placing it with a window or walkway behind it.
- Open View: The position should offer a clear view of the space in front, giving the homeowner a sense of control and security.
Orientation and the 'Auspicious Seat, Auspicious Direction' Principle
Each person has four auspicious and four inauspicious directions based on their Kua number. The altar should face one of the homeowner's auspicious directions, such as Sheng Qi (Wealth), Tian Yi (Health), Yan Nian (Relationships), or Fu Wei (Stability), and avoid inauspicious ones like Jue Ming (Misfortune), Wu Gui (Loss of Wealth), Huo Hai (Quarrels), or Liu Sha (Obstacles). The orientation should also harmonize with the house's own feng shui (Eight Mansions).
Locations to Avoid
- Opposite Bathrooms/Toilets: These places carry impure energy that can desecrate the altar.
- Near the Kitchen: Smoke, food smells, and noise are not suitable for a pure space.
- Under Beams or Stairs: These create oppressive energy and instability.
- In Bedrooms: This is a private space and lacks the necessary solemnity.
Arrangement of Altar Items
The arrangement should be balanced and symmetrical.
- Central Incense Burner: The incense burner is the most important item and should be placed centrally.
- Symmetrical Layout: Items like flower vases, candle holders, and offering cups should be arranged symmetrically on both sides of the incense burner.
- Always-Lit Lights: Altar lights symbolize guidance and should be kept on to maintain a warm and positive atmosphere.
- Harmonious Colors and Materials: Natural wood is preferred for its warm, grounding properties. Avoid items with sharp shapes or overly bright colors.
Maintaining a Pure Space
- Regular Cleaning: Clean the altar regularly with clean water or scented water to keep it pure.
- Timely Removal of Offerings: Remove old offerings (flowers, fruits, etc.) promptly after ceremonies.
- No Foreign Objects: Do not place personal items like money or documents on the altar, as this is considered disrespectful.
Harmonizing with the Overall Space
The altar should be integrated into the overall home design. Ensure furniture does not block it and that the entire home is clutter-free to allow for smooth energy flow, which in turn supports the sacred space. A harmonious and tidy living environment fosters peace of mind and attracts good fortune.
