TL;DR: Liêm Trinh is the main star with the most pronounced dual nature among the 14 - it can symbolize discipline and righteousness, or tip toward extremity, controversy, and romantic entanglement depending on dignity and companion stars.
What does the name Liêm Trinh mean?
Liêm Trinh (廉貞) combines two characters: "Liêm" meaning incorruptible, upright; "Trinh" meaning steadfast, chaste, loyal to principle. On the surface this reads as a purely virtuous star, yet in practical interpretation Liêm Trinh is regarded as the most complex, dual-natured star among the 14 main stars. Belonging to the Yin Fire element and classified as a Northern Dipper star, folk tradition calls it the "prisoner star" - governing law, incarceration, and discipline - while also ranking it as the second romance star, surpassed only by Tham Lang in matters of desire and passion.

What is the core nature of Liêm Trinh?
Liêm Trinh's most distinctive feature is its internal contradiction: when favorably transformed, it expresses uprightness, principle, idealism, and a readiness to fight for justice - well suited to careers in law, the military, or politics. Conversely, when afflicted by malefic stars or in a weak position, its darker face emerges: a hot temper, extremism, entanglement in disputes and litigation, or even a drift toward misconduct or turbulent romance. A person carrying a strong Liêm Trinh tends to have formidable inner resolve, great ambition, decisiveness, and high tolerance for pressure - but at the same time can be stubborn and unwilling to compromise once a position is fixed.
What do Miếu, Vượng, Đắc and Hãm mean for Liêm Trinh?
Liêm Trinh is exalted at the Tiger and Monkey palaces (Dần, Thân), where it fully expresses its dignified, upright character, typically paired with Thiên Tướng to form a refined, capable-manager configuration. At the Rat and Horse palaces (Tý, Ngọ), it sits prosperous, taking on a decisive, strategic flavor. At the Dragon, Dog, Ox, and Goat palaces (Thìn, Tuất, Sửu, Mùi) it is favorable, often paired with Thất Sát or Thiên Phủ depending on position, lending both toughness and calculation. Most notable is its position at the Cat and Rooster palaces (Mão, Dậu), where paired with Phá Quân it falls into a weak position - a combination considered unfavorable, prone to upheaval, controversy, and sudden misfortune absent benefic stars to temper it.
What does Liêm Trinh in the Mệnh Palace mean?
A person with Liêm Trinh in the Life Palace tends to have a strong personality, a complex inner world, and a deep drive for self-assertion, rarely content to live inconspicuously. In an exalted or prosperous position, this is someone with clear personal principles, bold in thought and action, well-suited to roles requiring firm judgment. In a weak position, the temperament can turn hot-headed and suspicious, prone to unjust controversy, requiring deliberate cultivation of composure and avoidance of impulsive decisions.
How does Liêm Trinh affect the Quan Lộc Palace?
This is one of the positions where Liêm Trinh performs best, particularly suited to law, police work, the military, technical fields demanding precision, or competitive negotiation. When exalted, the career path can reach genuine positions of authority; when weak, it tends toward ups and downs, workplace controversy, or legal disputes.
What does Liêm Trinh mean in Phu Thê and Tài Bạch?
In the Marriage Palace, Liêm Trinh points to an emotionally intense life with many highs and lows - passionate but potentially turbulent, particularly when weak or paired with romance stars like Đào Hoa or Hồng Loan, which can invite a love triangle. In the Wealth Palace, the star signifies income earned through boldness and calculated risk, but wealth fortunes tend to swing sharply - quick to gain and quick to lose without disciplined control.
