Liêm Trinh and Tham Lang in the same palace at Tỵ or Hợi: what do old Tử Vi texts say?

Liêm Trinh and Tham Lang in the same palace at Tỵ or Hợi: what do old Tử Vi texts say?

TL;DR: Liêm Trinh and Tham Lang sharing the Tỵ or Hợi palace is a Tử Vi Đẩu Số configuration that old texts usually read as a warning: imprisonment, slander, desire hard to break. Yet those same texts do not fully agree: some stress disaster, while others hold that meeting Tuần Triệt reverses the configuration into noble distinction. This is the reading of a divination system, not a verdict on any person's fate or character.

What is Liêm Trinh and Tham Lang in the same palace at Tỵ or Hợi?

Liêm Trinh and Tham Lang sharing the Tỵ or Hợi palace is a Tử Vi Đẩu Số configuration that texts usually read as a warning. By the star-placement rules, the two stars share a palace only at Tỵ or Hợi; when Liêm Trinh sits at Dần or Thân, Tham Lang lies in the opposite palace. Vương Đình Chi groups both positions into one Liêm Tham combination.

In short, this is a configuration in which both stars sit in positions that texts rank as hãm địa (fallen ground). According to Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang, Liêm Trinh is miếu địa at Thìn Tuất, vượng địa at Tý Ngọ Dần Thân, đắc địa at Sửu Mùi, and hãm địa at Tỵ Hợi Mão Dậu[3]. Tham Lang is likewise classed as unfavourable when it falls into Tỵ Hợi. Because both are fallen together, old texts devote a good number of warning verses to this pair.

What do old Tử Vi texts say about Liêm Tham at Tỵ Hợi?

Old texts speak of this pair mainly as a warning. The most familiar verse is the one quoted in Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử: "Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi, hình ngục nan đào", meaning that Liêm Trinh and Tham Lang at Tỵ Hợi make imprisonment hard to escape. The same book quotes another line: "Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi khôn bàn, chàng Tiêu thuở trước tân toan ngục hình", invoking an old tale to say this configuration is bound to hardship and prison.

Tử Vi khảo luận follows the same line when discussing Liêm Trinh in the various palaces. It writes: in the fallen ground of Tỵ Hợi, if Hóa Kỵ, Thiên Hình and Tham Lang accompany it, imprisonment is likely, and it holds that even with Xương Khúc alongside, prison trouble remains likely, because in that book's reading Liêm Trinh then carries the image of a "false gentleman"[2].

It should be said plainly: these are the words of old texts and of those who copied them, not a scientific conclusion about human fate. These books belong to a divination tradition, and their reading is a convention of the discipline, not an independently verified observation.

Why are these two stars read as heavy?

The reason lies in the qualities the texts assign to each star, which then combine into a difficult compound.

According to Tử Vi khảo luận, Liêm Trinh is a yin star, of the Fire element, expressing ambition for fame, a hot temper, bluntness that easily flares, a tendency to err and to fall into legal trouble. The book also calls Liêm Trinh the "second Đào hoa star", holding that wherever Liêm Trinh sits, the shadow of a beautiful person is there, and whichever period holds Liêm Trinh holds a sentimental love affair. In the same book, Liêm Trinh with Đào Hồng Hỉ is an upright love, while with Riêu Đà Kỵ it is a wrongful one[2].

According to Lý thuyết tượng số by Hoàng Tuấn, Tham Lang is yin Wood, both a sát tinh and a thiện tinh, tied to people who love song and poetry and immortal scenes. The book writes: Tham Lang meeting Khôi Việt becomes a person of lofty integrity, good strategy, fond of esoteric subjects; meeting Đào Hoa it becomes a man of the four directions, a woman of the streets, given to wine and lust.

Vương Đình Chi in Vương Đình Chi đàm Đẩu Số sets the two stars side by side for comparison. He holds that Tham Lang dislikes falling into hãm but likes meeting Không Diệu, because Không Diệu reduces wine, lust and wealth; whereas if Tham Lang meets Văn Xương and Văn Khúc it may become one who ruins his name for romance. He stresses this is the greatest difference between Tham Lang and Liêm Trinh: Liêm Trinh meeting Xương Khúc is regarded as "fine ritual and music", but Liêm Trinh meeting Không Diệu cannot reduce its song-and-pleasure, horse-and-hound nature[1].

The weight of Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi does not come from a single star, but from two stars already reputed for desire and hot temper sitting together on fallen ground, plus the accompanying stars.

Do the texts fully agree with one another?

No. This is the most noteworthy point when reading old texts on this configuration.

On one side, Tử Vi khảo luận and the verse "hình ngục nan đào" read Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi as disaster, imprisonment, hardship. Tử Vi khảo luận even lists a series of consequences by palace: with Tham Lang in the same palace, imprisonment and secret harm; in the Điền palace, ancestral property scattered; in the Phụ palace, poor parents; and in the Mệnh palace, a warning of prison[2].

On another side, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử offers a principle of reversal: a main star in fallen ground has a truly harsh influence, but if it meets Triệt Tuần the opposite is good. The book quotes: "Nhược phùng bại địa chuyên khán phù trì chi diệu, định hữu kỳ công", meaning a main star on fallen ground that meets Triệt Tuần turns good and builds brilliant achievement, called a kỳ cách (marvellous configuration). Applied to Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi, the book writes: although this is the configuration that verses judge as prison, if it meets Triệt Tuần it is instead a person of wealth and honour, accomplished in both letters and arms, the fierce and imprisoning qualities gone, and whether the distinction leans to letters or arms depends on the accompanying stars.

Hoàng Tuấn in Lý thuyết tượng số also notes this direction when discussing Tham Lang meeting Liêm Trinh at Tỵ Hợi: the book calls it the posture of a penal case, greatly in need of Tuần Triệt for rescue, and calls that case "Phản vi kỳ cách".

So for one and the same configuration, some texts read a penal case, others say that with Tuần Triệt it becomes a marvellous configuration. This is where the texts disagree, and readers should know which book's convention they are following.

The table shows the texts differ not only in conclusion but also in condition. Some read straight from the verse, some stress the role of Tuần Triệt, some attend to the accompanying stars.

The role of Tuần Triệt and accompanying stars

According to Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, Triệt Tuần can cancel the influence of a main star in miếu địa, but with a main star in hãm địa it turns good. The book states the general principle: an inauspicious star entering miếu is like a rebel who nonetheless succeeds, called "hung tinh nhập miếu, phát dã như lôi", and that case should not meet Triệt Tuần.

For Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi, this means the very fallen posture is the condition for Tuần Triệt to work its reversal. If it does not meet Tuần Triệt, the reading returns to the warning direction of the verses.

Beyond Tuần Triệt, the texts also attend to accompanying stars. Tử Vi khảo luận holds that Liêm Trinh meeting Phủ, Tướng, Tả Hữu, Khoa Quyền Lộc enjoys wealth and honour; meeting Xương Khúc in the same palace has command talent and sharpness; meeting the six sát tinh with Hóa Kỵ and Thiên Hình easily falls into prison; meeting Kình Đà Hỏa Linh is always anxious over lack of food and clothing, and prison; meeting Bạch Hổ also tends to prison; meeting Không Kiếp is described as "unrivalled in the world", famous far and wide[2].

Here too the texts are not uniform. Tử Vi khảo luận classes Không Kiếp among the six sát tinh that can cause disaster, yet when discussing Liêm Trinh meeting Không Kiếp it uses positive language. Vương Đình Chi holds that Không Diệu reduces the wine, lust and wealth of Tham Lang but does not reduce the song-and-pleasure, horse-and-hound nature of Liêm Trinh[1]. These are divergent readings, and no single conclusion reconciles them.

What to keep in mind when reading this configuration today?

First, remember that Tử Vi Đẩu Số is a divination system with its own set of conventions, not a scientifically verified method. Old texts write about Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi in the language of their time, with images such as prison, imprisonment, wine and lust, and those images carry the heavy social context of the old era.

Second, the old texts themselves disagree, so reading a single source and drawing a firm conclusion is easily mistaken. Some read from the verse, some stress Tuần Triệt, some attend to accompanying stars. Readers should know which book's convention they are following.

Third, even within Tử Vi Đẩu Số there are many schools and many ways of placing stars and palaces, so one configuration can be read in several ways. This is not rare but common in this discipline.

Gợi ý của Nhật Nguyệt: if you read about Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi for reference, read it as a traditional interpretation of a star combination, not as a sentence on a person or a fate. The old texts were written in a very different social context, and images such as prison or penal cases should not be carried straight into advice for life today.

Frequently asked questions

Is Liêm Trinh and Tham Lang in the same palace at Tỵ Hợi the worst configuration in Tử Vi?

There is no basis for calling it the worst configuration. Old texts usually read this pair as a warning, with verses such as "Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi, hình ngục nan đào" quoted in Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, and Tử Vi khảo luận also ranks Liêm Trinh at Tỵ Hợi as hãm địa. But Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học itself says that with Triệt Tuần the configuration reverses into wealth and honour, accomplished in both letters and arms. This is the reading of a divination system, not a conclusion about a specific person.

Why do Tử Vi texts read the same configuration differently?

Because the texts differ not only in condition but also in reading. Tử Vi khảo luận reads it as disaster, imprisonment, scattered ancestral property. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học stresses the role of Triệt Tuần, holding that a main star in fallen ground meeting Tuần Triệt turns good. Lý thuyết tượng số by Hoàng Tuấn also notes this direction when calling the case of meeting Tuần Triệt "Phản vi kỳ cách". Besides, accompanying stars such as Hóa Kỵ, Thiên Hình, Xương Khúc, Không Kiếp are read differently by each book.

Does Tuần Triệt really neutralize Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi?

According to Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử, yes. The book states the principle: a main star in fallen ground has a truly harsh influence, but if it meets Triệt Tuần the opposite is good, and quotes "Nhược phùng bại địa chuyên khán phù trì chi diệu, định hữu kỳ công". Applied to Liêm Tham Tỵ Hợi, the book writes that with Triệt Tuần it becomes a person of wealth and honour, accomplished in both letters and arms. However, this is the view of one specific book, not a rule all Tử Vi texts agree on.
