The first Zen lineage with clear influence in Vietnam is the Tì Ni Đa Lưu Chi lineage, brought by an Indian monk in the 6th century. Later came the Vô Ngôn Thông lineage around the 9th century, then the Trúc Lâm Yên Tử lineage founded by Trần Nhân Tông at the end of the 13th century. Before that, meditative concentration had been present since around the early Common Era with monks who came by sea to Giao Châu.
