TL;DR: Bệnh Phù is a minor star in Tử Vi Đẩu Số whose name ties it to illness and physical weakness, usually read in the Mệnh or Tật Ách palace. No single star decides health or fate: the palace, the ruling chính tinh, and all companion stars must be weighed together. It should not be confused with the Bệnh star of the Tràng Sinh cycle, nor with Nhị Hắc, also called Bệnh Phù, in Huyền Không phong thủy.

What is Bệnh Phù and where does it appear in a chart?
Bệnh Phù is a minor star in the Tử Vi Đẩu Số system. Its Sino-Vietnamese name combines "bệnh" (illness) and "phù" (to swell, to float), suggesting a weakened body or an illness surfacing outwardly. In traditional reading it is usually mentioned when examining the Mệnh and Tật Ách palaces, the two palaces that reflect the native's health and constitution. The name itself, however, is only a hint, not a verdict: a correct reading requires placing it within the whole chart.
Three different things are often confused under the same name:
- The Bệnh star within the Tràng Sinh cycle (one of the twelve stars of this cycle, alongside Tràng Sinh, Mộc Dục, Quan Đới, Lâm Quan, Đế Vượng, Suy, Bệnh, Tử, Mộ, Tuyệt, Thai, Dưỡng).
- Bệnh Phù, a minor star placed by its own rule, usually appearing in the star-placement tables of Tử Vi.
- The Nhị Hắc star in Huyền Không Phi Tinh phong thủy, also called "Bệnh Phù", but belonging to an entirely different system.
These three do not substitute for one another. A person may have the Bệnh star of the Tràng Sinh cycle without Bệnh Phù, and vice versa. Calling them all "Bệnh Phù" leads many chart readers to mistake them for one star and misread the chart.
How is Bệnh Phù placed in Tử Vi?
According to classical placement texts, the position of Bệnh Phù is not fixed by an independent rule based only on the year's Thiên Can. It depends on the Cục of the chart, and the Cục is calculated from the combination of the year's Thiên Can and Địa Chi. The Cục (Thủy Nhị Cục, Mộc Tam Cục, Kim Tứ Cục, Thổ Ngũ Cục, Hỏa Lục Cục) is the foundation for placing many important stars, including the minor stars related to Bệnh Phù.
In addition, the year's Thiên Can determines the yin-yang direction of the chart, that is, the direction of star placement. For the same age, a dương male and an âm female place stars in one direction, while an âm male and a dương female place them in the opposite direction. This difference in direction changes the position of stars such as Đà La, and therefore their interaction with Bệnh Phù. This is why two people of the same age and sex but different birth-year Can may still have Bệnh Phù in entirely different palaces.
In practice, chart makers usually rely on precomputed placement tables or software rather than counting by hand as in the days before such tools. This method was systematized from the late 1960s and became more widespread from the 1980s with the arrival of computers, making star placement faster and less error-prone.
Does Bệnh Phù really signal illness?
The short answer: Bệnh Phù is a signal worth noting about health, but it is not enough to conclude that someone will fall ill. In Tử Vi, a single star almost never decides anything. Its value shifts with the palace and with the set of stars accompanying it.
Tử Vi texts record several notable combinations:
| Combination | Traditional reading |
|---|---|
| Bệnh Phù with Đào Hoa, Hồng Loan, Thiên Hỉ, Riêu, Y | Warning of illnesses related to sexuality, venereal disease |
| Bệnh Phù with Sát, Hao, Hình, Kỵ | Warning of severe, hard-to-cure, or chronic illness |
| Bệnh Phù with Phá Quân | Possibly related to reproduction, few children |
| Bệnh Phù with Đào, Riêu | Illness of romantic or sexual nature |
The table above lists combinations recorded in books, not medical diagnoses. The same combination placed in the Mệnh, Tật Ách, or Phụ Mẫu palace yields different readings. And even when the combination is unfavorable, the severity still depends on the ruling chính tinh, its strength or weakness, and stars of relief such as Thiên Lương, Hóa Khoa, Thiên Phủ. Some books hold that Thiên Lương in Tật Ách can turn danger into safety, softening the influence of illness stars.
How do Bệnh Phù and the Bệnh star of the Tràng Sinh cycle differ?
This is the most common point of confusion. The Bệnh star in the Tràng Sinh cycle is one of the twelve stars of that cycle, carrying the meaning of decline and withering, symbolizing a phase when body and spirit sink. In some texts, the Bệnh star is mainly tied to health and illness, and is most feared when falling into the Mệnh or Tật Ách palace during youth, since that is when the body is still developing and meeting a weakening star makes illness more likely.
Bệnh Phù, according to Tử Vi books, besides illness also carries the meaning of thị phi, that is, gossip and disputes around oneself. This distinguishes it from the Bệnh star: the Bệnh star leans physical, while Bệnh Phù adds a layer of word-of-mouth trouble.
It should also be said plainly: views on the influence of these two stars are not consistent across books. Some texts stress that the Bệnh star is "purely illness", while others hold that Bệnh Phù is the primary illness star. Readers should know that schools differ here, and there is no single standard.
Are Bệnh Phù in Tử Vi and Nhị Hắc in phong thủy the same?
No. Nhị Hắc in Huyền Không Phi Tinh phong thủy is called "Bệnh Phù", but it belongs to the flying-star system, used to read by direction and time period, not to be placed in a Tử Vi chart. According to Thẩm Trúc Nhưng's Trạch vận tân án, Nhị Hắc arriving at the Khôn direction governs a body prone to illness, at the Khảm direction governs intestinal and stomach illness, at the Tốn direction governs bad reputation and respiratory illness, and at the Trung cung governs blood and chronic illness. The remedies in this book also follow phong thủy, for example using wind chimes or metal objects to act on the child of the Bệnh Phù star.
Because they share a name, many readers confuse them. If you are reading a Tử Vi chart, Bệnh Phù is a minor star in the chart. If you are reading a house direction, Bệnh Phù is Nhị Hắc in flying stars. The two do not share a method of interpretation.
What should be kept in mind when reading Bệnh Phù to avoid superstition?
In Tử Vi, a star only means something when placed in the whole. Classical books all stress this: with many auspicious stars, even an inauspicious encounter can turn auspicious; with many inauspicious stars, even an auspicious encounter turns inauspicious. Stars capable of restraining malefics include Tử Vi, Thiên Phủ, Thái Dương, Hóa Khoa, Hóa Quyền, but most must be in a strong position to have enough force. So seeing Bệnh Phù should not lead to a quick conclusion; one must see which palace it occupies, which chính tinh it meets, and which relieving stars join it.
Beyond that, a distinction must be kept between Tử Vi interpretation and medical diagnosis. Tử Vi is a traditional interpretive system and cannot replace a doctor's examination, tests, or advice. If someone shows signs of illness, the thing to do is seek medical care, not consult a chart. Star combinations such as "Bệnh Phù with Sát, Hao, Hình, Kỵ" are only reference warnings, not medical indications.
Finally, it should be remembered that readings of Bệnh Phù are not consistent across books and schools. Some stress the illness factor, some stress the gossip factor, and some hold that its influence is much lighter than that of other illness stars. Students should read widely, compare, and not treat one reading as the only truth.
