TL;DR: Phục Binh is a minor star in tử vi, yin in nature and generally considered inauspicious, governing ambush, hidden scheming, and rivalry. Its auspicious or inauspicious meaning depends heavily on the palace it occupies, the stars accompanying it, and the chart as a whole. In some configurations, Phục Binh can bring advantages in strategy, sharp observation, and seizing opportunities.
What Is the Phục Binh Star in Tử Vi?
Phục Binh is a minor star in the tử vi system, belonging to the group of stars that are inauspicious or partly auspicious and partly inauspicious. The name "Phục Binh" implies ambushing soldiers, concealment, and waiting for the right moment. In old texts, Phục Binh is usually classified among stars governing rivalry, scheming, and hidden relationships.
In the book Tử Vi kinh nghiệm quyển hạ, Phục Binh is mentioned alongside stars such as Tuế, Kỵ, Kiếp, and Không with the meaning "contending with others, the heart never settles"[1]. This shows that Phục Binh is tied to inner conflict, competitiveness, and difficulty letting go.
According to this school's understanding, Phục Binh belongs to the group of petty-person stars and can amplify negativity when meeting other weakened stars[1]. However, Phục Binh does not always carry bad omens. In some combinations, it instead shows strategy, observational ability, and the capacity to seize opportunities.
Does Phục Binh Carry Good or Bad Omens?
The short answer is: Phục Binh carries both, depending on the specific context of the chart. Phục Binh itself is an inauspicious star, but whether it is inauspicious or auspicious also depends on the palace, the stars in aspect, and the native's state of strength or weakness.
When Phục Binh Carries Bad Omens
Phục Binh usually shows its negative side when accompanying other inauspicious stars such as Kình Dương, Đà La, Hỏa Tinh, Linh Tinh, or when placed in important palaces such as Mệnh, Thân, Phối, Nô. In this case, it can indicate:
- Envy, resentment, and hidden rivalry in relationships.
- Calculation, scheming, even deception in communication.
- Stalking, monitoring others, causing loss of trust.
- Difficulties in marriage, distance, and a long time needed to harmonize.
According to Tuyển tập bài viết Tử Vi chọn lọc số 3, when Phục Binh is placed in the Phối palace, the marital relationship can be pushed into a state of distance. If it is in the Mệnh, Di, or Nô palace, the native easily reveals a tendency to observe and monitor those around them. These are typical negative manifestations of Phục Binh.
When Phục Binh Carries Good Omens
Phục Binh's positive side shows when it combines with auspicious stars such as Thiên Tướng, Hồng Loan, Đào Hoa, or when placed in palaces related to career and wealth. In this case, Phục Binh can bring:
- Strategy, the ability to calculate and seize opportunities.
- Sharp observation, helping detect what others overlook.
- An advantage in competition, especially in the workplace.
According to Tuyển tập bài viết Tử Vi chọn lọc số 3, the configuration "Tướng Phục Hồng Đào" (Thiên Tướng, Phục Binh, Hồng Loan, Đào Hoa) often brings the opportunity to "get rich early from youth". The resonance between Thiên Tướng's leadership, Phục Binh's strategy, and the attraction of the romance stars creates a strong appeal, thanks to which the native easily builds relationships and seizes opportunities.
How does Phục Binh interact with other stars?
Phục Binh does not exist independently but always interacts with other stars in the chart. This interaction determines most of its auspicious or inauspicious meaning.
| Star combination | Main meaning |
|---|---|
| Phục Binh + Suy | Increases decline, weakness, and negativity[2] |
| Phục Binh + Thiên Tướng + Hồng Đào | Opportunity to get rich early, strong personal appeal |
| Phục Binh + Tuế + Kỵ + Kiếp + Không | Rivalry, inner conflict, difficulty letting go[1] |
| Phục Binh + Kình Dương + Đà La | Calculation, scheming, easily causing loss of trust |
According to Tuyển tập bài viết Tử Vi chọn lọc số 3, when Phục Binh meets stars of a petty-person nature, the native's character can reveal stronger negative sides such as envy and betrayal[2]. According to the saying "Phục binh phù thịnh, phù cả suy", Phục Binh also makes the Suy star[2] more decadent and weak.
Conversely, when Phục Binh combines with stars that can neutralize it or have positive qualities, the bad influence can be reduced[2]. This shows the role of neutralizing stars such as Tử Vi, Lộc Tồn, or other auspicious stars in balancing Phục Binh's influence.

According to Tuyển tập bài viết Tử Vi chọn lọc số 3, when Phục Binh is in the Phối palace, the marital relationship can be pushed into distance, and it takes a long time for the two to truly harmonize. How to interpret Phục Binh in practice?
When interpreting Phục Binh, students of tử vi should avoid hasty conclusions based on a single star. According to Kinh nghiệm học Tử Vi by Đốc Nguyễn, to become a successful tử vi interpreter one must possess many factors, including tử vi digestion, life experience, and the conscience and heart of the interpreter. According to Tuyển tập bài viết Khâm Thiên Tứ Hóa chọn lọc số 2, students of Northern School Tử Vi need a comprehensive view, not stopping at one palace or a single Hóa Kỵ; instead, they must grasp the "interconnection" between the flows of energy, from which to build an overall picture of cause and effect. This also applies to Phục Binh: it must be examined in relation to the entire chart.
Conclusion
Phục Binh is a yin minor star, governing ambush, scheming, and hidden rivalry. Its auspicious or inauspicious meaning depends on the palace, accompanying stars, and the chart as a whole. When accompanied by inauspicious stars, Phục Binh can carry bad omens such as envy, deception, and distance. When combined with auspicious stars, it can bring advantages in strategy, sharpness, and opportunities for success. The interpreter needs a comprehensive view and should avoid hasty conclusions based on a single star.
*Gợi ý của Nhật Nguyệt: The interpretation of tử vi, including the Phục Binh star, should only be seen as a reference tool for better understanding oneself and relationships. It should not be regarded as an unchanging destiny. Each person has the ability to change and improve their life through daily actions and choices.*
