TL;DR: According to Vietnamese Tử Vi books, Thiên Thương and Thiên Sứ are a pair of auxiliary stars placed by palace function: Thiên Thương always in the Friends/Subordinates palace, Thiên Sứ always in the Health palace. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi áo bí both record this placement, while Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư reads them as two milestone posts governing the stretch of life after the age of 50. Tử Vi tổng hợp writes that these two stars are used only for examining periods and bring harm only when they meet malefic stars; that is what the books say, not a prediction for any particular person.
What Are Thiên Thương and Thiên Sứ in Tử Vi?
According to Vietnamese Tử Vi books, Thiên Thương and Thiên Sứ are two auxiliary stars placed by functional palace: Thiên Thương in the Nô Bộc palace and Thiên Sứ in the Tật Ách palace, rather than counted from the birth year, month or hour like most other stars. Every chart has these two stars in those two palaces. Because the Nô Bộc and Tật Ách palaces of each chart fall on different earthly branches depending on the Mệnh palace, the position of Thương Sứ among the twelve branches still changes from chart to chart.
In Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang, section 8.21 on the Thương Sứ star group records: the Nô Bộc palace is where Thiên Thương is always placed, and the Tật Ách palace is where Thiên Sứ is always placed[1]. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử also copies the same rule, and further condenses it into a placement verse: Nô Thương, Giải Sứ, meaning Thương placed in Nô, Sứ placed in Ách[4].
Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học also adds five-element attributes for the two stars: Thiên Thương belongs to yang Water, Thiên Sứ belongs to yin Water[4], whereas Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên gives Thiên Thương as Earth and Thiên Sứ as Water[1]. The same source records Thiên Thương is hãm (fallen) in the Thìn, Ngọ, and Mùi palaces; Thiên Sứ is hãm in Sửu and Tuất, and Thiên Sứ governs dissipation and misfortune[4].
What Is Special About the Placement of Thiên Thương and Thiên Sứ?
The special point is that these two stars do not require consulting a table by birth year. While Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên devotes a separate section to instructing how to place Tài Thọ according to the Mệnh and Thân palaces, then placing Khốc Hư by birth year, the Thương Sứ section has exactly two lines: Thương in Nô, Sứ in Ách[1]. Việt Viêm Tử also records the same placement and groups Thương Sứ into a set of four star groups placed by their own method, including Tài Thọ, Thương Sứ, Khốc Hư, and La Võng[4].
| Star group | Placement method | Fixed palace |
|---|---|---|
| Thiên Thương | Fixed | Nô Bộc |
| Thiên Sứ | Fixed | Tật Ách |
| Thiên Tài | Count from Mệnh palace, starting at Tý year, forward to birth year | By birth year |
| Thiên Thọ | Count from Thân palace, starting at Tý year, forward to birth year | By birth year |
| Thiên La | Fixed | Thìn |
| Địa Võng | Fixed | Tuất |
The table above shows Thương Sứ shares with La Võng the fixed placement, but differs in that La Võng is tied to the two branches Thìn and Tuất, while Thương Sứ is tied to two functional palaces, Nô Bộc and Tật Ách. Precisely because they are fixed, when reading a chart the student always knows in advance where these two stars are; what needs examining is whether that chart's Nô Bộc and Tật Ách palaces are strong or weak, and which stars converge there.
Why Is Thiên Thương Placed in the Nô Bộc Palace?
Of the four books used for this article, only Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương raises this question. The book poses the problem: Thiên Sứ in Tật Ách makes sense because Sứ means receiving orders, in charge of executing calamities, but Thiên Thương in the Nô palace is hard to understand, since one cannot say that having subordinates means bringing harm and injury to the chart owner[2].
The explanation of Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư places Thương Sứ on the timeline of a human life. The book likens the journey from early longevity to advanced longevity to stretches of road with uphill and downhill slopes, and calls Thương Sứ two guard posts situated between those three road segments: Thương means damage, Sứ means receiving orders[2]. According to this framing, the Nô palace and the Ách palace are two markers of equal time length. If the chart owner is a yang male or yin female going forward, past age 50 they will surely encounter Thương; if yin male or yang female going in reverse, past age 50 they will surely meet Sứ[2].
Also according to Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư, after passing the early-death milestone of age 49, the periods at 53 and 67 spare almost no one, regardless of whether the chart owner belongs to the Thái Tuế or Tuế Phá group, Thiếu Dương or Thiếu Âm, male or female, going forward or reverse[2]. This is the book's own time-cycle reading, not a verified rule about anyone's lifespan.
Are Thiên Thương and Thiên Sứ Absolutely Bad Stars?
The books do not describe them that way. Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc states directly: Thương Sứ is only used to read fortune periods, going with malefic stars then causing harm, and that harm is not necessarily the harm of war[3]. The same source notes that the more harmful auxiliary stars converge, the more severe the harm becomes, especially when major and minor periods coincide[3].
Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học describes in more detail the harmful combinations: when Thương Sứ meets Thái Tuế with fallen Kình Dương and Đà La, one often suffers dissipation, gossip, verbal disputes, lawsuits; when the annual period involves travel, being away from home for long, one must guard against calamity and many worries; if meeting song Hao, Tang Môn, Bạch Hổ, it may manifest as livestock in the house dying, servants leaving, or friends scattering[4].
Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên describes the Thương Sứ pair as mournful and obstructing all undertakings, and notes separately: "Gặp Xương, Khúc: tác họa một cách khủng khiếp" (meeting Văn Xương and Văn Khúc, they do terrible harm)[1]. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học cites the verse "Quế Sứ, Hoa Thương tối hiềm giao ngộ" and explains that Văn Xương meeting Thiên Sứ, or Văn Khúc meeting Thiên Thương in the same palace, is very bad and brings much gossip[4]. These are the two books' readings of fortune periods, not predictions for any particular person.
When Reading Fortune Periods, How Should Thiên Thương and Thiên Sứ Be Interpreted?
Tử Vi tổng hợp emphasizes the coincidence factor: when major and minor periods both meet Thương Sứ with malefic stars, the severity increases markedly[3]. The book also notes that if Kình Dương and Đà La additionally meet Lưu Kình, Lưu Đà in the same palace, the danger increases further[3].
Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư raises one case requiring caution against injustice: when the Nô Bộc palace falls into the Tỵ Dậu Sửu triad, because Phá Quân is most fallen paired with Phá Toái[2]. The book advises in that case to immediately seek Hóa Khoa and Quang Quí, that is Ân Quang and Thiên Quý; if these stars lend support, one can rest assured planning long-term matters[2]. This is an example showing the book does not interpret Thương Sứ in isolation but always within the palace and star combination.
On the order of periods, the same book writes that a person going forward is on the smooth road and meets Thiên Thương first, which is somewhat lighter than a person going in reverse who must meet Thiên Sứ at the first step; it likens Thiên Sứ to the chief envoy carrying out orders and Thiên Thương to a mere assistant[2]. This is Thiên Lương's own statement; the other three books say nothing about this order.
Which Stars Can Neutralize Thương Sứ?
None of the four books has a separate entry on stars that neutralize Thương Sứ; the remarks are scattered through their general discussions. Besides Hóa Khoa, Ân Quang and Thiên Quý mentioned above, Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư writes that when Thiên Quan sits together with Thiên Sứ, every difficulty becomes easier[2]. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, in its general section on rescuing stars, lists Hóa Khoa as having a fairly strong rescuing influence, along with Thiên Giải, Địa Giải and Giải Thần[1].
Tử Vi tổng hợp states the condition from the other side: Thương Sứ does harm only when it goes with malefic stars[3]. As these books read it, Thương Sứ is not a fixed sentence but depends on the stars that gather with it in the chart.
Nhật Nguyệt's Suggestions
When checking a chart and seeing Thiên Thương in Nô Bộc, Thiên Sứ in Tật Ách, one should understand these are two fixed positions every chart has, not a private sign of an unlucky person. What needs doing is examining which stars guard that chart's Nô Bộc and Tật Ách palaces, whether malefic stars converge, and only then interpreting the period.
The ages 53 and 67 are the reading of Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư alone, not something the books record in common. A chart drawn with Nhật Nguyệt's Tử Vi tool shows the Nô Bộc and Tật Ách palaces; according to the books, Thương Sứ sit in those two palaces. The books use Thương Sứ to read fortune periods, not to pronounce fate, and this article only reports them for reference.
Points Where the Texts Do Not Agree
There are at least three points on which the books differ. The first is the reason Thiên Thương is placed in Nô Bộc: Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư explains it by the time axis and age markers[2], while Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học only record the placement rule[1][4]. The second is the element: Tân biên gives Thiên Thương as Earth and Thiên Sứ as Water[1]; Áo bí gives Thiên Thương as yang Water and Thiên Sứ as yin Water[4]. The third is the hãm positions: Áo bí records Thiên Thương as hãm at Thìn, Ngọ, Mùi and Thiên Sứ as hãm at Sửu, Tuất[4], while Tân biên lists no hãm palaces for these two stars.
This article follows the conventions of Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học for star placement, and Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư for age-based period interpretation. These are the conventions of the texts, not measurement results, so readers should view this as one understanding within Tử Vi, not a conclusion about anyone's actual fate.
