Overview of Opening Ceremony Offerings
An opening ceremony offering is a common Vietnamese business custom, spiritually praying for smooth sailing and prosperity before operations begin. This ritual shows the owner's sincerity to deities and local spirits.

Preparing Offerings
- Five-fruit tray: 5 types of fresh fruits with bright colors.
- Fresh flowers: chrysanthemums or marigolds.
- Incense sticks: a bundle or 3 sticks.
- Candles: 2 red or yellow candles.
- Betel and areca nuts.
- White wine: 1 small bottle with 3 cups.
- Clean water: 3 cups.
- Dry tea with cups.
- Rice and salt: small plates.
- Votive paper: clothes, hats for deities, gold ingots.
- Cakes and candies.
- Roasted pork (optional) or boiled chicken.
- Tobacco (regional custom).
Arranging the Offering Tray
General Layout
Place the tray in a clean, dignified, and airy spot,often before the main entrance or inside facing the door.
Arrangement Order
- Central front: five-fruit tray, elevated.
- Flowers on one side.
- Betel, cakes, rice, salt in front or around.
- Pork/chicken in a dignified position.
- Three cups each of wine, water, tea in a row.
- Incense and candles in dedicated holders.
- Votive paper kept aside, not on the main tray.
Ritual Procedure
Step 1: Choose Date and Time
Select an auspicious date and time according to tradition, often based on the owner's birth year.
Step 2: Clean and Arrange
Clean the premises and arrange offerings as described.
Step 3: Light Candles and Incense
The owner lights candles first, then 3 incense sticks, holding them to the forehead while praying.
Step 4: Recite Prayer
The prayer includes naming oneself, announcing the date and purpose, offering respects to deities, and requesting blessings for business success. Use traditional prayer texts from reliable sources or sincere personal words.
Step 5: Wait and Burn Votive Paper
Wait until incense burns about two-thirds, then burn votive paper in a safe outdoor area.
Step 6: Conclude
After burning completes, respectfully remove offerings. Food can be shared.
