Cự Môn and Thiên Cơ in the same palace at Mão or Dậu: what Tử Vi books say and where they differ

TL;DR: Cự Môn and Thiên Cơ in the same palace at Mão or Dậu form the Cự Cơ Mão Dậu configuration, classed among the noble configurations in Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang's Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên. That book holds Mão better than Dậu, and the Ất, Tân, Kỷ and Bính birth years better placed than others. Vương Đình Chi's Trung Châu phái stresses that Lộc must be seen for the configuration to be good, warns against Hỏa Tinh and Linh Tinh, and flags the inherent flaw: a tendency to showiness and much learning with little achievement.

What is the Cự Cơ Mão Dậu configuration?

The Cự Cơ Mão Dậu configuration is the combination of the two stars Cự Môn (巨門) and Thiên Cơ (天機) holding the same palace, which can only occur in the Mão or Dậu palace. So when practitioners say "Cự Cơ", insiders understand Mão or Dậu at once.

This position is recorded in Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang's Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên as a distinct configuration. The book has an entry titled "Cự Cơ Mão Dậu", defined as the Mệnh palace or the Quan Lộc palace placed at Mão or Dậu, with Cự Môn and Thiên Cơ holding the palace together.

Why are Mão and Dậu treated separately when they differ by only one palace?

The key difference lies in the five elements. Thiên Cơ belongs to Mộc, and Mão also belongs to Mộc, so when Thiên Cơ sits at Mão it is "đắc địa", its force at its peak. Dậu, by contrast, belongs to Kim, and Kim overcomes Mộc, so Thiên Cơ at Dậu is restrained and struggles to express the mobility and transformation that are this star's nature. Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang writes in the book that Cự Cơ holding the palace together at Dậu is not entirely as good as at Mão, and cites the verse: "Cự, Cơ Dậy thượng hóa cát giả, túng hữu tài quan dã bất chung", meaning that even if there is prosperity at Dậu it is hard to last.

On the same point, Vương Đình Chi in Vương Đình Chi đàm đẩu số also records the old judgement: "天機與巨門同居卯酉,必退祖而自興", that is, when Thiên Cơ and Cự Môn are together at Mão Dậu one must leave the ancestral estate and build anew. Vương Đình Chi adds that precisely because Thiên Cơ belongs to Mộc and is checked by Kim at Dậu, the "巨機同臨格" takes Thiên Cơ as its pivot: if Thiên Cơ is checked, the "ám" (dark, obscuring) quality of Cự Môn is not moderated.

How does Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên read this configuration?

Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang devotes a fair number of passages to this configuration in Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên. He cites "Cự, Cơ đồng cung, công khanh chi vị" to affirm the configuration's potential for high office.

Notably, Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang differentiates by the Can of the birth year. He writes: "Cự, Cơ, Mão, Dậu, Ất, Tân, Kỷ, Bính chí công khanh", meaning that for the Ất, Tân, Kỷ and Bính years, with the Mệnh palace at Mão or Dậu held by Cự Cơ, high office and rank are certain. Other years may still be distinguished and comfortably off, but not as wholly good as these four.

Comparing with the Tứ Hóa table in the same book, for the Ất year Thiên Cơ Hóa Lộc and Thái Âm Hóa Kỵ; for the Bính year Thiên Đồng Hóa Lộc and Liêm Trinh Hóa Kỵ; for the Kỷ year Vũ Khúc Hóa Lộc and Văn Khúc Hóa Kỵ; for the Tân year Cự Môn Hóa Lộc and Văn Xương Hóa Kỵ. Thus in the Tân year Cự Môn directly Hóa Lộc, and in the Ất year Thiên Cơ directly Hóa Lộc. In the Bính and Kỷ years Lộc falls on neither star, and the book does not explain separately why those two years are also listed.

Where does Vương Đình Chi's Trung Châu phái read it differently?

Vương Đình Chi in Vương Đình Chi đàm đẩu số and Thâm tạo giảng nghĩa takes a markedly more critical view than Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên. He does not deny the configuration, but sets stricter conditions.

First, he states: "卯酉宮「天機巨門」同度,必須見祿始吉", meaning Cự Cơ at Mão Dậu must see Lộc to be good. This is a prerequisite: without Lộc the configuration is hard to activate.

Second, he warns: "最不喜「火星鈴星」同躔,主輕薄、破蕩", that is, Hỏa Tinh and Linh Tinh in the same palace are most to be avoided, governing a frivolous, ruinous temperament. This is a point on which Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên agrees, stressing that Cự Cơ at Dậu needs many bright, good stars in support, especially Xương, Khúc, Khôi, Việt, Tả, Hữu, Khoa, Quyền and Lộc, to enjoy lasting wealth and honour together with both fortune and longevity.

Third, Vương Đình Chi points out the inherent flaw: the Cự Cơ configuration easily "流為浮滑" (becomes showy and superficial) and suffers from "多學無成" (much learning without achievement). He cites the old verse "巨門交人,始善終惡" (Cự Môn in dealings with people, good at first and bad at the end) and holds that if one knows how to correct it, it can be transformed into "高風亮節" (a lofty and unsullied bearing).

On fortunes over time, Vương Đình Chi gives a specific rule: take the palace where Thái Dương and Thái Âm sit as the marker for major and minor periods; most to be avoided is Thái Dương Hóa Kỵ, and if one meets repeated hình and sát with the annual Kỵ striking Thái Dương Hóa Kỵ, it governs being caught in great storms through accumulated resentment.

What do the two books say about love and marriage?

This is where the two books differ most clearly. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên hardly discusses this configuration's love life separately, speaking only in general of wealth, honour and office. Vương Đình Chi, by contrast, devotes a long passage to marriage.

He writes: "卯酉「機巨」,男命巨門化祿者,主老夫配少妻;天機化祿者,則多再婚", meaning for a male chart with Cự Cơ at Mão Dậu, if Cự Môn Hóa Lộc the man tends to marry a wife much younger, and if Thiên Cơ Hóa Lộc he often remarries.

For a female chart he writes: "女命巨門化祿者,亦以長配為宜,天機化祿者,亦多婚姻上的缺憾", that is, a female chart with Cự Môn Hóa Lộc should also marry an older husband, while with Thiên Cơ Hóa Lộc marriage often has shortcomings. He adds a further warning: "女命見天同與祿存同度者,行至貪狼運,每主受人遺棄,婚姻波折,故不宜早婚", meaning a female chart with Thiên Đồng and Lộc Tồn in the same palace, when the period reaches the palace holding Tham Lang, tends to be abandoned and to meet marital setbacks, so early marriage is inadvisable.

It should be noted that this is the reading of one specific Tử Vi school. Other schools may not offer similar judgements, and these judgements themselves belong to the layer of metaphysical interpretation, not to verifiable data.

Why do the books record things differently?

The difference between Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Trung Châu phái reflects two different approaches to Tử Vi Đẩu Số. Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang's Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên is a book widely circulated in Vietnam, presenting configurations in the traditional manner, based on old Chinese verses, with few conditions attached.

Vương Đình Chi's Trung Châu phái came later and sets stricter conditions, as the sections above show. Từ Tăng Sinh, in Tử Vi Đẩu Số mệnh vận phân tích, is more critical still: the old books left behind "records only of oral formulae, verses, and the outward manifestations of star combinations", and that judging destiny on that basis alone is "60 to 70 per cent mistaken"[2].

This means that when researching Cự Cơ Mão Dậu, a student should not read one book and stop. The same verse may be read optimistically by Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and as a warning by Trung Châu phái.

Nhật Nguyệt's suggestion: how should this configuration be approached?

When researching Cự Cơ Mão Dậu, readers should treat it as a configuration with potential that needs specific conditions to activate, not as a fixed sentence. Both Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Trung Châu phái agree that this configuration needs auspicious stars in support to be good, and dislikes hostile stars, especially Hỏa and Linh.

A point worth noting is that both books stress the factor of "self-reliance": one must leave the ancestral estate and build anew, must correct the showy temperament, must be careful in dealings because Cự Môn governs gossip and dispute. These are points that can be applied as reminders about attitude to life rather than as predictions of destiny.

Finally, it should be remembered that Tử Vi Đẩu Số is a system of metaphysical interpretation, not a predictive science. The judgements about wealth, honour, office and marriage in these books all belong to the layer of interpretation, not to verifiable events. Readers should consult multiple sources, compare schools, and should not treat any configuration as deciding one's fate.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cự Môn and Thiên Cơ in the same palace better at Mão or at Dậu?

Both Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Trung Châu phái hold that Mão is better than Dậu. The reason is that Thiên Cơ belongs to Mộc, and sitting at Mão (also Mộc) it is đắc địa, whereas at Dậu (Kim) it is checked by Kim. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên cites the verse "Cự, Cơ Dậy thượng hóa cát giả, túng hữu tài quan dã bất chung" to say that at Dậu even prosperity is hard to last.

Which birth years are most favoured for Cự Cơ Mão Dậu?

Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang's Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên holds that the Ất, Tân, Kỷ and Bính years are most favoured. By the Tứ Hóa table, in the Tân year Cự Môn Hóa Lộc and in the Ất year Thiên Cơ Hóa Lộc; the book gives no reason for the Bính and Kỷ years. Other years may still be distinguished, but not as wholly good.

What happens when Cự Cơ Mão Dậu meets Hỏa Tinh and Linh Tinh?

Vương Đình Chi's Trung Châu phái warns that Cự Cơ at Mão Dậu most dislikes meeting Hỏa Tinh and Linh Tinh, which govern a frivolous, ruinous temperament. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên also stresses that this configuration needs many auspicious stars in support, such as Xương, Khúc, Khôi, Việt, Tả, Hữu, Khoa, Quyền and Lộc, to enjoy lasting wealth and honour.
