TL;DR: In the phi tinh Four Transformations approach, Hóa Kỵ is not only placed by the birth-year can but also flown out from the can of each palace. The book Tử Vi đẩu số: Mệnh vận phân tích by Từ Tăng Sinh, who records his own teacher as belonging to the Phi Tinh school, reads Kỵ through several situations: Kỵ nhập (Kỵ entering the palace being examined), Kỵ xung (Kỵ entering the opposite palace, which the book considers the most inauspicious), Lộc Kỵ in the same palace (which the book reads as song Kỵ when a single star transforms into both) and trùng điệp Kỵ (the Kỵ of the original chart and the Kỵ of the đại hạn entering the same palace). Tử Vi đẩu số toàn thư only teaches placing the Four Transformations by the birth-year can. This is a present-day school's way of reading, unverified, not a general rule for everyone who studies Tử Vi.
What Is Hóa Kỵ in Tử Vi Phi Tinh?
Hóa Kỵ is one of the four stars of Tứ Hóa (Lộc, Quyền, Khoa, Kỵ), placed according to the can of the birth year or the can of each palace. In Tử Vi đẩu số toàn thư, volume two, the star placement section only teaches placing Tứ Hóa by birth-year can; for example, someone born in a Giáp year has Liêm Trinh hóa Lộc, Phá Quân hóa Quyền, Vũ Khúc hóa Khoa, Thái Dương hóa Kỵ[1]. "Phi tinh", by contrast, is the technique of taking the can of each palace in the chart to fly Tứ Hóa, creating a second layer of information beyond the birth-year Tứ Hóa.
Từ Tăng Sinh's Tử Vi đẩu số Mệnh vận phân tích explains that each palace in the mệnh bàn has two layers: the combination of stars sitting in it (the palace's characteristics) and the palace can flying Tứ Hóa (the star's transformed qi). The author calls the second layer the "Hóa Khí" of the star sitting in the palace[2]. Phi tinh Hóa Kỵ is therefore not a new star appearing on the chart, but the result of taking the palace can as a condition and looking up the Tứ Hóa table.
In the book the author notes that his teacher belonged to the Phi Tinh school, one of several present-day Tử Vi schools he lists, and says that books using this Tứ Hóa method were only made public in 1985[2]. What follows is therefore the reading of one present-day school, not a method found in Tử Vi đẩu số toàn thư.
Why Distinguish Birth-Year Kỵ from Phi Tinh Kỵ?
Birth-year Kỵ is fixed, placed once by birth-year can, and anyone can look it up in a table. Phi tinh Kỵ is dynamic, changing with each palace examined, so one chart can have many different phi tinh Kỵ at the same time. Mệnh vận phân tích holds that a star's nature only changes, and then turns into an event, after Tứ Hóa has acted on it layer by layer[2].
How Do Kỵ Nhập and Kỵ Xung Differ?
Kỵ nhập is Hóa Kỵ flying into the palace being examined, while Kỵ xung is Hóa Kỵ flying into the opposite palace, thereby opposing and breaking the palace being examined. Mệnh vận phân tích writes that Hóa Kỵ is the most important of the Tứ Hóa, and that in strength Kỵ xung is the most malefic, while Kỵ sitting in a palace is less so[2].
An example the book gives: the Huynh Đệ palace has Thiên Tướng sitting alone; if the palace can flies Tứ Hóa into Hóa Kỵ opposing the Mệnh palace, one cannot rely on one's siblings, because the Ấn star turned Hóa Kỵ opposes Mệnh[2]. Here Kỵ is not in the Huynh Đệ palace: it lands in the Thiên Di palace, opposite the Mệnh palace, which is why it is called opposing Mệnh.
The book also sets out principles for Kỵ xung between the natal chart and the đại hạn chart. Any palace whose Hóa Kỵ opposes the Mệnh palace is treated as unfavorable; so is the Mệnh palace sending Hóa Kỵ to oppose one of the other eleven palaces, which the book describes as a tendency to dissolve, separate, escape[2].
| Situation | Kỵ position | Direction of impact | How the book describes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kỵ nhập (Kỵ sitting) | In the palace examined | Directly on the palace | Less malefic than Kỵ xung |
| Kỵ xung | Opposite palace | Opposes the palace examined | Treated by the book as the most malefic |
| Kỵ xung between the Mệnh palace and another palace | Opposite the palace being opposed | Both directions, natal or đại hạn chart | Tendency to dissolve, separate, escape |
| Kỵ xung between same-type palaces of natal and đại hạn | Opposite the palace of the same name | Both directions | That palace produces unfavorable matters |
How to Read Lộc Kỵ Đồng Cung?
Lộc Kỵ đồng cung is the case where Hóa Lộc and Hóa Kỵ gather in one palace. In its table of two-Hóa combinations, Mệnh vận phân tích states briefly that Lộc and Kỵ in the same palace are judged as song Kỵ (double Kỵ)[2]. The book's example is a chart whose Phụ Mẫu palace is at Canh Dần, holding Thiên Đồng hóa Lộc and Văn Xương hóa Khoa; the Canh can of that same palace then makes Thiên Đồng hóa Kỵ, giving Lộc Kỵ đồng cung, and the book holds that the Tật Ách palace opposite has to bear the opposing force of Kỵ[2].
The book also sets a condition on this reading: in another chart, Thái Âm hóa Lộc and Thái Dương hóa Kỵ both fall in the Phu Thê palace, and the author writes that when Lộc and Kỵ do not come from the same star the song Kỵ effect does not arise; the two forces coexist, and the book reads this as an unstable emotional life[2].
The Canh Dần example above depends on the Tứ Hóa table the book uses, in which the Canh can makes Thiên Đồng hóa Kỵ. The Tứ Hóa placement verse in Tử Vi đẩu số toàn thư, volume two, likewise reads "庚日武阴同为首", that is, for the Canh can: Thái Dương hóa Lộc, Vũ Khúc hóa Quyền, Thái Âm hóa Khoa, Thiên Đồng hóa Kỵ[1]. Another widely circulated table, which is also the one used by Nhật Nguyệt's Tử Vi chart tool, gives Thiên Đồng hóa Khoa and Thái Âm hóa Kỵ for the Canh can; under that table the Canh Dần palace in the example has no Thiên Đồng tự hóa Kỵ. The schools do not agree on this can.
What Is Tự Hóa Kỵ?
Tự Hóa Kỵ is the case where the can of a palace itself makes a star in that same palace hóa Kỵ, like Thiên Đồng in the Canh Dần palace in the example above. Mệnh vận phân tích writes that a natal palace with tự hóa Kỵ can also be called "Kỵ Xuất" (Kỵ going out), and reads it in the sense of dispersal[2]. In the book's opening example, Thiên Cơ, hóa Lộc by birth year, sits in a Mậu Tý palace; the Mậu can makes Thiên Cơ tự hóa Kỵ, and the author calls this meeting of birth-year Lộc with tự hóa Kỵ Song Kỵ[2].
Trùng Điệp Kỵ: Multiple Layers of Kỵ Stacked
Mệnh vận phân tích defines Trùng điệp Kỵ as the case where a palace of the natal chart and a palace of the đại hạn chart both send Hóa Kỵ into the same palace; that palace bears a double Kỵ force and, according to the book, the matter occurs when the lưu niên reaches that palace or the one opposite it[2]. When the natal Kỵ and the đại hạn Kỵ fall in two opposite palaces, the book calls it Hỗ xung Kỵ. Using the same idea of stacked layers, the book analyses one chart: the Nhâm Thìn đại hạn has its Quan Lộc palace overlapping the natal Tật Ách palace; the Bính can of the natal Tật Ách palace makes Liêm Trinh Hóa Kỵ enter the đại hạn Tật Ách palace, which already has birth-year Kỵ, forming two layers of malefic force. The book also says the đại hạn Quan Lộc palace overlaps the natal Tật Ách palace, and Hóa Kỵ opposes the natal Quan Lộc palace, so the book holds that in this chart career misfortune and illness are linked[2].
On Liêm Trinh, the book writes that Liêm Trinh governs blood, and also governs official emoluments; Liêm Trinh Hóa Kỵ evolves into suffering imprisonment due to lawsuits and disputes, and cites the line "Liêm Trinh Hóa Kỵ, called Prison"[2]. This is the school's understanding, not a mandatory rule for everyone studying Tử Vi.
For the twelve pairs of same-type palaces in the natal chart and the đại hạn chart, the book states the principle that no palace should send Hóa Kỵ to oppose the palace of the same name in the other chart. According to the book, when this happens the palace concerned produces unfavorable matters: for palaces of affairs, lawsuits, upheaval, moving house, loss of money; for palaces of relatives, unexpected events and illness[2]. This is the book's judgment and has not been verified.
The Time Mechanism: Why Must Kỵ Pass Through Many Layers to Manifest?
Mệnh vận phân tích stresses that events in Tử Vi phi Tứ Hóa must pass through reinforcement from each time layer to manifest. For example, if the đại hạn shows an event and the lưu niên also shows that event, then the đại hạn adds two layers of force to the lưu niên, and by the lưu nguyệt the event will occur. When that time passes, the intensity of influence gradually decreases layer by layer and the nature returns to its original static state[2].
The book also describes the sequence "Cause, Incubation, Ripening, Occurrence, Ending": an event will pass through the natal Mệnh palace showing a very small sign, then the đại hạn making it more concrete, then a certain lưu niên when it occurs. Therefore when reasoning about events, one must grasp two key points: the time of occurrence and the cause-and-effect of the event[2].
Comparison with Tử Vi đẩu số toàn thư
Tử Vi đẩu số toàn thư, volume two, the star placement section only teaches placing Tứ Hóa by birth-year can (the verse is headed "论生年干", judged by the birth-year can), not flying Tứ Hóa by palace can[1]. Volume one has a question-and-answer entry on the star Hóa Kỵ, recording a reply attributed to Master Hi Di: "忌为多管之神。守身命一生不顺,小限逢之一年不足,大限十年悔吝" (Kỵ vi đa quản chi thần. Thủ Thân Mệnh nhất sinh bất thuận, tiểu hạn phùng chi nhất niên bất túc, đại hạn thập niên hối lận), meaning that Kỵ is a spirit entangled in many affairs: in the Thân or Mệnh palace life does not go smoothly, met in a tiểu hạn it is a year of shortfall, met in a đại hạn it is ten years of regret[1]. It can be seen that the toàn thư uses Tứ Hóa as a component of judgment, but does not build a system of phi tinh by palace can like Mệnh vận phân tích.
| Point of comparison | Tử Vi đẩu số toàn thư | Tử Vi đẩu số Mệnh vận phân tích |
|---|---|---|
| Tứ Hóa | Placed by birth-year can | Placed by birth-year can and palace can |
| Kỵ | One layer, fixed | Many layers, dynamic by palace |
| Focus | Star combinations, configurations | Phi tinh, time layers |
| Kỵ xung | Mentioned together with the sát stars ("羊陀火忌冲破") | Treated as the most malefic |
This difference does not mean one side is right and the other wrong. These are two different approaches within the same Tử Vi tradition: the toàn thư leans toward static configurations, Mệnh vận phân tích leans toward movement through time.
Nhật Nguyệt's Suggestion When Reading Hóa Kỵ
When encountering Hóa Kỵ in a chart, the student should clearly determine three questions: Is this Kỵ birth-year Kỵ or phi tinh Kỵ? Does it enter which palace or oppose from which palace? Is there another layer of Kỵ stacked on it? Only when these three questions are answered is there a basis for judgment, avoiding concluding immediately upon seeing Kỵ.
Remember that all Tử Vi judgments, including those of the phi tinh school, are reference readings, not certain predictions about finances, health or destiny. The books cited here also only give principles of reasoning; specific results depend on the combination of many factors and on each person's actual circumstances.
