TL;DR: Giáp cung refers to the two palaces immediately flanking a given palace, usually Mệnh or Thân, so that the stars in the two adjacent palaces form a configuration interacting with the flanked palace. In Tử Vi Đẩu Số, the pairs Sword Ram and Spinning Camel always flank Prosperity because the placement rule puts Sword Ram before and Spinning Camel after Prosperity, while Left Support and Right Assistant can only flank the Mùi palace (born in the 3rd or 5th lunar month) or the Sửu palace (9th or 11th month), and Literary Glory and Literary Melody can only flank those two palaces when born in the Dần, Thìn, Thân or Tuất hour. The flanking configuration is only a supporting layer of information, to be read together with the main stars, brightness levels and four transformations of the flanked palace, and should not be taken in isolation to draw conclusions.
What is giáp cung in Tử Vi?
Giáp cung is the term for the two palaces immediately flanking a given palace, usually the Mệnh or Thân palace. When those neighboring palaces hold stars, those stars form a configuration acting on the palace squeezed between them, called giáp. In Tử Vi Đẩu Số, giáp is a supporting layer of information, read alongside and not in place of the main star of the flanked palace. The flanked palace must still be judged first by its ruling main star, whether that star is in temple, prosperity, or fallen position, and only then by the two flanking sides.
The term giáp comes from the structure of the chart itself: the twelve palaces form a closed circle, and every palace has two neighbors. Any palace therefore has two flanking palaces, but in practice only the cases where the flanking pair forms a meaningful configuration are noted, such as Kình Đà giáp Lộc, Tả Hữu giáp Mệnh, and Không Kiếp giáp Kỵ.
Why do Kình Dương and Đà La always flank Lộc Tồn?
Kình Dương and Đà La always flank Lộc Tồn because the placement rule for these two stars is tied to the position of Lộc Tồn. Tử Vi Đẩu Số toàn thư, volume 2, records the quyết for placing Kình Đà: 禄前擎羊后陀罗, that is, Kình Dương goes in the palace before Lộc Tồn and Đà La in the palace after it, the two stars following Lộc Tồn[1]. The book gives an example: if Lộc Tồn is in Tý then Kình Dương is placed in Sửu and Đà La in Hợi, and other cases follow the same pattern[1]. In other words, wherever Lộc Tồn sits, the two adjacent palaces immediately hold Kình and Đà, forming Kình Đà giáp Lộc.
This is a necessary consequence of the placement rule, not a separate configuration invented by the interpreter. The real question is therefore not whether Kình Đà giáp Lộc exists, but which palace that Lộc Tồn occupies and whether the flanked palace is clashed or broken.
What are the conditions for Tả Phụ Hữu Bật to flank the Mệnh palace?
Tả Phụ (左辅; Vietnamese Tử Vi books and Nhật Nguyệt's chart call it Tả Phù) and Hữu Bật can flank only two palaces: the Mùi palace for a birth in the 3rd or 5th lunar month, and the Sửu palace for a birth in the 9th or 11th month. Tử Vi Đẩu Số toàn thư, volume 2, records the quyết for placing Tả Hữu by birth month: Tả Phụ starts from the Thìn palace in the first month and moves clockwise, while Hữu Bật starts from the Tuất palace in the first month and moves counterclockwise[1]. Because the two stars start from opposite palaces and move in opposite directions, they are always symmetric across the Sửu Mùi axis, so they sit on both sides of one palace only when that palace is Sửu or Mùi: in the 3rd month Tả Phụ is in Ngọ and Hữu Bật in Thân; in the 5th month Tả Phụ is in Thân and Hữu Bật in Ngọ; in the 9th month Tả Phụ is in Tý and Hữu Bật in Dần; in the 11th month Tả Phụ is in Dần and Hữu Bật in Tý. Mệnh must sit in exactly that palace for it to be Tả Hữu giáp Mệnh.
Volume 3 of the book ranks 左右夹命 (Tả Hữu giáp Mệnh) as a noble configuration, gives the example of Mệnh in Sửu with Tả Phụ in Tý and Hữu Bật in Dần, and adds the note 若不贵则大富, that is, if not noble then greatly wealthy[1]. The note there reads 四七十一月生者 (those born in the 4th, 7th and 11th months)[1]; computed by the placement quyết of volume 2 itself, Tả Phụ in Tý with Hữu Bật in Dần is a birth in the 9th month, while in the 4th month the two stars share the Mùi palace and in the 7th month Tả Phụ is in Tuất and Hữu Bật in Thìn, flanking no palace.
How are Văn Xương and Văn Khúc placed when they flank a palace?
Văn Xương and Văn Khúc are placed by birth hour, and they too can fall into the two palaces flanking Mệnh. Tử Vi Đẩu Số toàn thư records the quyết for placing Xương Khúc: Văn Xương starts from the Tuất palace at the Tý hour and moves counterclockwise to the birth hour, while Văn Khúc starts from the Thìn palace at the Tý hour and moves clockwise to the birth hour[1]. The book gives the example of a person born at the Tý hour: Văn Xương is placed in Tuất and Văn Khúc in Thìn; born at the Sửu hour, Xương retreats to Dậu and Khúc advances to Tỵ[1].
Because Xương and Khúc start from opposite palaces and move in opposite directions, the two stars are also symmetric across the Sửu Mùi axis and can flank only the Sửu palace (birth at the Thân or Tuất hour) or the Mùi palace (birth at the Dần or Thìn hour). Volume 3 gives the example of 昌曲夹命: Mệnh in Sửu, Văn Xương in Dần, Văn Khúc in Tý, with the note 不贵即富,吉多方论此为贵, meaning if not noble then wealthy, and only with many auspicious stars is it read as noble[1].
Table comparing common flanking star pairs
| Flanking star pair | Basis of placement | How it forms | When it flanks, and how the book ranks it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kình Dương, Đà La | By birth-year can, tied to Lộc Tồn | Kình in the palace before Lộc, Đà in the palace after Lộc | Always flank the Lộc Tồn palace; giáp Kỵ when that palace holds Hóa Kỵ, ranked by the book as a failed configuration |
| Tả Phụ, Hữu Bật | By birth month | Tả starts at Thìn moving clockwise, Hữu starts at Tuất moving counterclockwise | Flank only Sửu (9th, 11th month) or Mùi (3rd, 5th month); ranked as a noble configuration |
| Văn Xương, Văn Khúc | By birth hour | Xương starts at Tuất moving counterclockwise, Khúc starts at Thìn moving clockwise | Flank only Sửu (Thân, Tuất hour) or Mùi (Dần, Thìn hour); praised by the book as remarkable |
| Địa Không, Địa Kiếp | By birth hour | Kiếp starts at Hợi moving clockwise, Không starts at Hợi moving counterclockwise | Flank only Hợi (Sửu, Hợi hour) or Tỵ (Tỵ, Mùi hour); ranked as a failed configuration |
| Hỏa Tinh, Linh Tinh | The book's quyết goes by birth-year branch | Dần, Ngọ, Tuất years: Hỏa in Sửu, Linh in Mão | The book's example: flanking Mệnh in Dần; ranked as a failed configuration |
The placement basis follows the quyết in volume 2 and the ranking follows volume 3 of Tử Vi Đẩu Số toàn thư[1]; the birth months and hours in the last column are computed from those quyết.
How is a flanking configuration read as good or bad?
Volume 3 of Tử Vi Đẩu Số toàn thư gathers the flanking configurations into one line: 三夹命凶六夹吉. The note lists the three inauspicious flankings as Kiếp Không, Hỏa Linh and Kình Đà; the six auspicious flankings as Tử Phủ, Tả Hữu, Xương Khúc, Khôi Việt, Khoa Quyền Lộc and Nhật Nguyệt; and then adds that with more bad than good even the good turns bad, with more good than bad even the bad turns good, and that the temple and prosperity of Thân, Mệnh and the three directions must be examined[1].
For each inauspicious flanking the book gives an example and calls it a failed configuration (败局): Kình Đà giáp Kỵ is Mệnh placed in Thân and meeting the star Hóa Kỵ, with Kình Dương in Dậu and Đà La in Mùi; Hỏa Linh giáp Mệnh is Mệnh placed in Dần or Thân, with the example of Hỏa Tinh in Sửu and Linh Tinh in Mão, and the note 吉多尚可, that is, with many auspicious stars it is still acceptable; Kiếp Không giáp Mệnh is Mệnh placed in Hợi with Địa Kiếp in Tý, and by the placement quyết Địa Không is then in Tuất, for a birth at the Sửu hour[1]. Giáp Kỵ here means Hóa Kỵ sitting inside the flanked palace, not Hóa Kỵ in both neighboring palaces, because the natal chart has only one Hóa Kỵ star, set by the birth-year can.
On the opposite side, the book records Tả Hữu giáp Mệnh as a noble configuration; for example, with Mệnh placed in Sửu, Tả Phụ in Tý, and Hữu Bật in Dần, if not eminent then at least greatly wealthy[1]. The book also records Khôi Việt giáp Mệnh as a rare configuration, giving the example of Mệnh in Thìn, Khôi in Mão, and Việt in Tỵ[1]. These are all readings according to the book's conventions, not fixed conclusions about a specific person.
Why should a flanking configuration not be separated from the whole chart?
The note to the line 三夹命凶六夹吉 itself does not read a flanking alone: for the same flanking, the book also weighs how many auspicious stars are present and the temple and prosperity of Thân, Mệnh and the three directions[1]. The flanking configuration is therefore only one of many layers to read: the ruling main star, temple, prosperity, or fallen position, the four transformations, the three directions and four cardinal points.
A flanking is best read as a signal raising or lowering the degree within the discipline's system of conventions, not as an independent verdict.
Nhật Nguyệt's suggestion when consulting a flanking configuration
When examining a chart with a flanking configuration, proceed in order: determine whether the palace under consideration is Mệnh, Thân, or another functional palace; identify the two neighboring palaces and the stars placed there; read the main star of the flanked palace first; check whether that palace holds Hóa Kỵ; only then conclude in the direction of increase or decrease. For star pairs placed by birth hour such as Xương Khúc and Không Kiếp, recheck the birth hour, because one hour's error changes the stars of the two neighboring palaces and the flanking configuration changes with them.
Flanking is part of the convention system of Tử Vi Đẩu Số, not a scientific conclusion about a person. Readers should treat it as a way the discipline organizes information, for cross-checking and self-verification, not for asserting destiny or deciding major matters.
