What is Zi Wei Dou Shu?
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數) is an Eastern metaphysical system attributed to Taoist master Chen Tuan (872–989) during the Five Dynasties period. The name "Zi Wei" comes from a purple flower (Lagerstroemia indica), often called crape myrtle in Vietnam. Legend has it that ancient astrologers used this flower for divination and destiny reading. Existing classical texts include the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Ji, Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu, and Zi Wei Dou Shu Jie Lan (written in 1581, Ming Dynasty).
Despite many legends, Zi Wei Dou Shu is actually a complex system based on astronomy, calendar, and yin-yang five elements philosophy. How to Cast a Zi Wei Dou Shu Chart
Step 1: Determine birth information (lunar calendar)
To cast a chart, you need the exact year, month, day, and hour of birth in the lunar calendar (convert from solar if necessary). The birth hour is divided into 12 double-hours, starting with Zi hour (23:00–1:00), Chou (1:00–3:00), Yin (3:00–5:00), Mao (5:00–7:00), Chen (7:00–9:00), Si (9:00–11:00), Wu (11:00–13:00), Wei (13:00–15:00), Shen (15:00–17:00), You (17:00–19:00), Xu (19:00–21:00), Hai (21:00–23:00).
Step 2: Place the Life Palace and Body Palace
The Life Palace (Ming) is placed based on the birth month and hour. The method: start from the first month as Yin palace, second month as Mao... up to the birth month, then count the hour from there. Specifically, take the birth month as the base, count in the forward direction to the birth hour to determine the Life Palace; the Body Palace is placed based on the birth month but counting in the reverse direction to the birth hour.
Example: A person born in the 3rd month, Wu hour. Place Life Palace: from Yin (month 1) → Mao (month 2) → Chen (month 3), stop at Chen. From Chen count forward hours: Chen is Zi hour, Si is Chou, Wu is Yin... up to Wu hour will land on Xu palace. So Life Palace is at Xu. Body Palace: from Chen count backward hours: Chen is Zi, Mao is Chou, Yin is Yin... up to Wu hour will land on Shen palace. So Body Palace is at Shen.
Step 3: Place the remaining 12 palaces
After having the Life Palace, place the other palaces in forward order: from Life Palace, place Siblings Palace, Spouse Palace, Children Palace, Wealth Palace, Health Palace, Travel Palace, Friends Palace, Career Palace, Property Palace, Blessings Palace, Parents Palace. The Body Palace, once placed, is used to determine Career or Wealth depending on the school.
Step 4: Place the Zi Wei star and other major stars
The Zi Wei star is the most important, placed based on birth day and month. There are various methods, but the common one uses the "Bureau" (Water Bureau, Wood Bureau, Metal Bureau, Earth Bureau, Fire Bureau) based on the birth year and day. After determining the Bureau, place the Zi Wei star in the corresponding palace, then place other stars according to rules: the Zi Wei system includes Tian Fu, Tai Yang, Wu Qu, Tian Tong, Lian Zhen; the Tian Fu system includes Tian Ji, Tai Yin, Tan Lang, Ju Men, Tian Xiang, Tian Liang, Qi Sha, Po Jun.
Step 5: Place auxiliary stars and calculate major life periods
After placing major stars, add auxiliary stars such as Lu Cun, Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Hong Luan, Tian Xi, Xian Chi, Tian Yao, etc. Finally, calculate the major life periods (each 10 years) starting from the Life Palace or Body Palace depending on gender and yin/yang year.
Meaning of the 12 Palaces in Zi Wei Dou Shu
Life Palace
The Life Palace is the most important, representing oneself, personality, temperament, and overall destiny. It is the first palace examined. If the Life Palace has many peach blossom stars like Hong Luan, Tian Xi, Xian Chi, Tian Yao, the person often has charisma, romantic tendencies, and may be prone to love affairs but also gossip.
Siblings Palace
The Siblings Palace reflects relationships with biological siblings and close friends. It indicates harmony, conflict, or support from peers.
Spouse Palace
The Spouse Palace discusses marriage, life partner, and marital relationship. It is used to interpret love fate, marriage age, and family happiness. If this palace has auspicious stars like Hong Luan or Tian Xi, marriage tends to be smooth and harmonious.
Children Palace

Property Palace
The Property Palace represents houses, land, fixed assets, and relationships with the original family. It also shows living environment and stability of residence.
Blessings Palace
The Blessings Palace is the spiritual palace, blessings, and enjoyment. It indicates luck, inner peace, and good things received from past lives.
Parents Palace
The Parents Palace talks about parents, superiors, and family origins. It reflects relationships with parents, upbringing, and inherited spiritual legacies.
Relationship between Palaces and Stars
Each palace does not stand alone but interacts through stars. For example, a Life Palace with Hong Luan (auspicious peach blossom) often combines with a good Spouse Palace, indicating a happy marriage. Conversely, a Life Palace with Xian Chi (dark peach blossom) may cause romance obstacles if not resolved. Stars like Hong Luan, Tian Xi, Xian Chi, Tian Yao are considered peach blossom stars, affecting love, charm, and male-female relationships.
