TL;DR: Business compatibility by age is the practice of comparing two people's birth years through Nạp Âm five elements, Tứ Hóa and palace positions in the Tử Vi chart to estimate how favourable a partnership may be. There is no single formula for everyone: each school (Nạp Âm, Tử Vi Tứ Hóa, Bát Tự) gives different results, and all of it should be treated only as reference alongside a partner's real capability, contract and reputation.

What is business compatibility by age?
Business compatibility by age is the comparison of the birth years of two or more people who intend to cooperate, pool capital or start a company, to see whether that relationship is favourable under Eastern astrological systems. The most common comparison relies on the Nạp Âm five elements of the birth year, that is the Kim, Mộc, Thủy, Hỏa, Thổ relation between the two sides, and extends to Tứ Hóa and palace positions in the Tử Vi chart.
This is an astrological custom rooted in the concept of five-element generation and overcoming, not a rule that can be independently verified. No statistical data shows that age determines the success or failure of a business deal. Its practical value lies in forcing people to pause and consider a partner carefully before signing.
Nạp Âm and the principle of clash between two birth years
What is Nạp Âm?
Nạp Âm is a system that assigns a pair of five elements to each pair of stem-branch combinations in the sixty-year cycle, for example Nhâm Tý and Quý Sửu both belong to Tang Đố Mộc, Giáp Tý and Ất Sửu both belong to Hải Trung Kim. This system is widely used in matching birth years for marriage and business because it reduces a birth year to one specific element, which is easy to compare.
Why is saying only "Kim overcomes Mộc" not enough?
According to the book Bát Tự chọn lọc số 9 (reference edition), the key issue is that the type of each element must be considered. Within Mộc, Tang Đố Mộc (Nhâm Tý, Quý Sửu) is soft, weak wood; within Kim, Kiếm Phong Kim is sharp metal, while Hải Trung Kim is gold sunk under the sea, with weak metal energy. When Tang Đố Mộc meets Kiếm Phong Kim, the overcoming is strong and easily causes harm; but meeting Hải Trung Kim, the level of overcoming is mild, even negligible.
This book quotes the words of Quản Lộ to assert a principle: if two destinies are both in a prosperous position yet clash, the harmony is only on the surface, while the inner energy has already scattered. Applied to business, this means one must not simply look up a table of "this age clashes with that age" and draw a conclusion, but must examine the specific Nạp Âm type of both sides.
| Nạp Âm pair | Five-element relation | Level according to Bát Tự số 9 |
|---|---|---|
| Tang Đố Mộc meets Kiếm Phong Kim | Kim overcomes Mộc | Strong overcoming, easily harms the Mộc side |
| Tang Đố Mộc meets Hải Trung Kim | Kim overcomes Mộc | Mild overcoming, possibly negligible |
| Đinh Mùi (Thiên Hà Thủy) meets Đinh Sửu (Giản Hạ Thủy) | Same Thủy, different type | Mutual depletion, energy scatters |
The case of same type harming each other
Bát Tự chọn lọc số 9 also mentions the phenomenon of same type harming each other: two Nạp Âm of the same element but different type can clash. For example, Đinh Mùi belongs to Thiên Hà Thủy (water of the sky river) and meets Đinh Sửu, which belongs to Giản Hạ Thủy (water of the mountain stream). Although both are Thủy, one is at a high level and one at a low level, and the flows run in opposite directions, so when combined they deplete each other rather than strengthen. This is why many pairs of the same destiny element are still considered unable to cooperate.
What do Tứ Hóa and palace positions in Tử Vi say about partners?
The Tử Tức palace and partnership
The book Khâm Thiên Tứ Hóa chọn lọc số 2 (reference edition) holds that the Tử Tức palace reflects not only children but also partnership relationships and business partners as well as old age. With birth-year Hóa Quyền placed in Tử Tức, going out to earn money, that is business activity and outside investment, is usually suitable for this person, and their cooperative relationships often bring success. This is one of the palaces used by Tử Vi researchers to discuss partners.
The Huynh Đệ palace and the ability to cooperate
According to the view of Khâm Thiên Tứ Hóa chọn lọc số 3 (reference edition), if birth-year Hóa Quyền sits in the Huynh Đệ palace, that person can bring out cooperative ability and initiative in relationships to bring benefits. This book sees it as a good sign for building assets through cooperation and alliance with others. This way of reading belongs to the Tứ Hóa school, not a general rule of all Tử Vi schools.
The combined transformation image between palace stems
In Tử Vi chọn lọc số 11 (reference edition), the author introduces a particular method of interpretation: the Heavenly Stem of each palace in the chart is fixed according to birth year and birth month; after determining the stem of the palace containing Tứ Hóa, the reader combines it with the stem that combines and transforms in order to detect new images. The book gives a sample chart with Hóa Lộc in the Tài Bạch palace whose stem is Giáp; because Giáp combines with Kỷ, one can then read that wealth arises through cooperation with a person of the Kỷ year or through relationships of a disciplined, orderly kind.
It must be said clearly: this is the reading of one school, not a scientific conclusion, and different Tử Vi schools may produce different images from the same chart.
How do different schools view "compatible age for partnership"?
The most important point when researching this topic is that the schools do not agree with one another. For the same pair of birth years, each system gives a different result:
| System | Basis for reading | Why results can differ |
|---|---|---|
| Nạp Âm five elements | Relation of element and type of the two Nạp Âm | Same element can still clash if types differ |
| Tử Vi Tứ Hóa | Position of birth-year Tứ Hóa in the palaces | Each school places stars and reads images differently |
| Bát Tự | Five-element relation in each person's four pillars | Must consider day and hour of birth, not only the year |
Therefore, when someone says "this age is compatible with that age", the correct answer is to ask which system they are using. There is no common compatibility table for all schools.
Should you choose a business partner by age?
The direct answer is that age should not be treated as the deciding criterion. Even in the astrological books referenced here, the tone is very cautious. Tử Vi chọn lọc số 17 (reference edition) states clearly that Tử Vi Đẩu Số is not an absolute tool of destiny, that a good configuration can still meet obstacles in a bad period, and that interpretation must combine major and minor periods with each person's specific circumstances. The same book, in the section on marriage, also stresses that a chart with many bad points does not mean the marriage will certainly break down, but the effort, understanding and tolerance of both sides are the deciding factors.
Turning to feng shui, research by Trương Thị Thúy Hà published in the Journal of Religious Studies in 2016 shows that Vietnamese people in new urban areas in Hà Nội regard the age of the household head as an important factor when choosing house direction, the year to build, and the day to break ground, and often seek a ritual master to check ages before construction. This research records the practice, it does not prove the effectiveness of age checking. Notably, even in folk practice, age is only one of many factors considered, not the only one.
Application suggestions from Nhật Nguyệt
This section is Nhật Nguyệt's interpretation, not the words of ancient books or research results.
If you want to use age as a reference step in choosing a partner, you can follow this sequence:
- Determine clearly which system you are using (Nạp Âm, Tử Vi Tứ Hóa, or Bát Tự) and note that convention down, so that results from different schools are not mixed.
- If using Nạp Âm, compare both the element and the type of the two Nạp Âm, do not just look up the element.
- If using Tử Vi, look at palaces related to cooperation such as Tử Tức and Huynh Đệ, and the position of birth-year Tứ Hóa, but remember this is the reading of one school.
- Place the age-checking result beside real factors: financial capacity, credit history, transparency in the contract, similarity of goals and decision-making style.
- If the age-checking result is unfavourable but all real factors are good, treat it as a suggestion to be more cautious in the early stage, not a reason to refuse the opportunity.
This approach keeps the reference value of astrology without turning it into a barrier to sound business decisions.
