Thon Cao Incense Village: A 300-Year Journey of Preserving a Family Craft
Located about 40km from central Hanoi, right next to the left bank dike of the Red River, Thon Cao incense village in Bao Khe commune, Hung Yen city (Hung Yen province) has long been known as one of the largest traditional incense-making villages in Northern Vietnam. What sets Thon Cao incense apart is its gentle, long-lasting fragrance rarely found elsewhere, thanks to herbal blending secrets passed down through generations.
Origins and the Legend of the Craft Ancestress
According to legend, in the 18th century, Mrs. Dao Thi Khuong learned the incense-making craft during a business trip far from home and brought it back to teach the villagers. To honor her contribution, every year on the 22nd day of the 8th lunar month, villagers hold a death anniversary ceremony for the craft's founder. Today, nearly 200 households in the village still maintain the traditional craft, despite economic fluctuations and competition from industrial products.
The Secret Behind Thon Cao Incense: A Blend of Herbs and Skilled Hands
The Three-Part Structure of an Incense Stick
The reputation of Thon Cao incense comes from meticulous craftsmanship and special ingredient formulas. Each incense stick consists of three main parts:
- Incense stick core: Made from finely split bamboo stems, requiring skillful hands to ensure uniform length and thickness.
- Incense powder: The soul of the incense stick, a mixture of wood powder ground from various medicinal plants including agarwood, cinnamon bark, and other herbs. Each family has its own secret formula, creating distinctive characteristics.
- Binding adhesive: Usually made from Melaleuca gum or litsea gum, helping the powder adhere to the stick naturally.
The Difference of Family Secrets
A special feature of Thon Cao incense is that each family possesses its own unique herbal blending formula, treated as a sacred secret passed only to family and clan members. Therefore, most workers are relatives, creating strong bonds in production. Mr. Mai Van Trong, owner of a production facility, shared that regular contact with natural herbs is also why locals have fresh, rosy skin.
The Craft That Changed Lives
Economic Value of a Traditional Craft
After hundreds of years, incense making has become the main source of income, transforming many families' lives in Thon Cao. According to Ms. Tran Thi Tuoi, owner of one of the largest facilities, monthly revenue can reach nearly 100 million VND, especially high during Tet holiday and major festivals. Mr. Nguyen Nhu Khanh, Vice President of the Thon Cao Traditional Craft Village Association, noted that even the smallest facilities earn about 20 million VND monthly, while larger ones can reach hundreds of millions.
Adapting to Modern Times
Embracing progress, Thon Cao villagers have wisely applied modern machinery to certain production stages to increase productivity while preserving traditional blending secrets. This enables Thon Cao incense to serve not only the domestic market but also export to countries like Cambodia, India, and China, solidifying the village's position internationally.
The Artisan's Dedication and Cultural Values
Heart and Soul in Every Incense Stick
For Thon Cao villagers, incense making is not merely a livelihood but a cultural and spiritual practice. They believe incense connects people with the spiritual world and ancestors, so it must never be made carelessly. Each incense stick embodies the maker's dedication and reverence. Amidst the market's proliferation of counterfeit and low-quality incense harmful to health, Thon Cao villagers remain committed to safe production using natural ingredients, building a trusted brand.
A Craft Village in Vietnam's Cultural Flow
Despite numerous challenges, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when festivals and temples were closed, Thon Cao villagers continue their production tirelessly. They understand that incense making has become inseparable from Vietnamese spiritual life, from ancestor worship to important rituals. The craft also binds the community together, as many who left for other careers eventually return to continue their ancestors' work. The enduring presence of Thon Cao incense village stands as living proof of preserving and promoting Vietnam's beautiful traditional cultural values.
