Dai Bai bronze casting village - the cradle of bronze craft in Northern Vietnam
Dai Bai village (Gia Binh district, Bac Ninh province) has long been known as the cradle of bronze casting in Northern Vietnam. With a history of about 1,000 years, the craft is not only a traditional handicraft but also a living cultural heritage, crystallizing the dedication and talent of many generations of artisans.
Origin and history
According to local documents and legends, Dai Bai bronze casting appeared in the early 11th century, associated with the craft founder Nguyen Cong Truyen. Through more than 10 centuries of ups and downs, the village has maintained its core values while constantly adapting to the market and developing in the modern era. Located in the Red River Delta, an area with a rich Kinh Bac cultural tradition, Dai Bai has favorable conditions for developing sophisticated handicrafts.
The quintessence of Dai Bai bronze art
The quintessence is expressed through two key elements: skillful casting technique and refined engraving art. Artisans not only use pure copper but also mix alloys according to their own secrets to create unique shades and durability. On the bronze surface, elegant dragon and phoenix patterns, majestic Dong Son bronze drums, or peaceful rural scenes are vividly brought to life.
To create a complete product, craftsmen must go through a rigorous process:
- Modeling: Artisans shape models from clay or beeswax, requiring meticulousness and high aesthetic sense.
- Mold making: Molds are made from a mixture of clay, sand, and additives with good heat resistance.
- Melting materials: Copper and alloys are melted in furnaces at about 1,100-1,200°C.
- Pouring: The technique requires precision to avoid air bubbles.
- Shaping and repairing: After cooling, rough products are hammered, welded, and defects repaired.
- Fine engraving: The final stage, artisans use chisels and hammers to create sharp, vivid patterns.
Each step requires absolute precision and years of accumulated experience. This strict process makes each Dai Bai product not only a high-quality item but also an embodiment of Vietnamese culture, passed down through generations as endless pride.
Diverse products and market
Beyond daily utensils, Dai Bai bronze has transformed into high-end artworks. Artisans constantly create:
- Worship items: horizontal lacquered boards, parallel sentences, incense burners, bronze urns, statues.
- Bronze statues and reliefs: exquisite statues and vivid reliefs.
- Feng shui paintings and fine art items: unique, imbued with Vietnamese soul.
Products serve not only the domestic market but also reach the world. The village currently has about 300 cooperatives and enterprises with 350 craft households, reaching over 600 cooperatives and nearly 700 households in peak periods across 5 hamlets, each specializing in certain products. Notably, 15 large enterprises operate effectively, exporting to countries such as Japan, South Korea, and the EU.
Preservation and development in integration
In the integration trend, Dai Bai is writing a story of preserving identity while integrating. The village firmly maintains traditions from unique casting techniques to patterns imbued with Vietnamese culture, while constantly innovating to adapt to international markets.
With strong support from Bac Ninh provincial authorities, artisans have opportunities to participate in cultural events such as the "Bac Ninh Cultural Quintessence - Dong Ho Colors" program in Hanoi. These events serve as bridges for Dai Bai bronze to shine, affirming its status as a living heritage in the modern flow.
