What Is the White Tiger Star in Tử Vi? How to Place It, Its Position in the Thái Tuế Circle, and Its Meaning According to Vietnamese Tử Vi Books

TL;DR: According to Vietnamese Tử Vi (Vietnamese astrology) books (Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, Tử Vi tổng hợp, Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư), the White Tiger is the 9th star in the Thái Tuế cycle of 12 stars, placed by the Earthly Branch of the birth year: from the palace bearing the name of the birth year, count forward to the 9th palace; for example, for a person born in the year of the Tiger, the White Tiger is in the Dog palace. The star belongs to the Metal element. Tân biên and Tổng hợp record it as đắc địa in Tiger, Monkey, Cat and Rooster, while Áo bí records its miếu địa in Rooster. The books describe the White Tiger in its đắc địa as strong-willed and courageous, and in its hãm địa as governing injury; these are the words of the books, and it can only be read within the whole chart.

What Is the Bạch Hổ Star in Tử Vi?

According to Vietnamese Tử Vi books, Bạch Hổ is an auxiliary star in the Thái Tuế circle of 12 stars placed by the Earthly Branch of the birth year. This article draws on four books: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang, Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương, Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc, and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên[1] and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học[4] list this circle in the same order: Thái Tuế, Thiếu Dương, Tang Môn, Thiếu Âm, Quan Phù, Tử Phù, Tuế Phá, Long Đức, Bạch Hổ, Phúc Đức, Điếu Khách, Trực Phù. Thus Bạch Hổ is the 9th star in the circle, after Long Đức and before Phúc Đức.

Regarding the Five Elements, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records that Tang Môn belongs to Wood and Bạch Hổ to Metal, and gives one line for the pair: miếu at Mão and Dậu, vượng at Dần and Thân[4]. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên likewise gives Tang Môn as Wood and Bạch Hổ as Metal and classes both as bại tinh[1]. This is a pair often interpreted together, called the Tang Hổ set. By the order of the Thái Tuế circle, Tang Môn is the third star and Bạch Hổ the ninth, so the two stars are always in two opposite palaces.

A distinction must be made between the fixed Bạch Hổ and the Lưu Bạch Hổ. The book Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang states that when examining a year's fortune, one must apply the moving stars, including Thái Tuế, Tang Môn, Bạch Hổ, Thiên Khốc, Thiên Hư, Lộc Tồn, Kình Dương, Đà La, and Thiên Mã; each moving star is prefixed with Lưu to avoid confusion with the fixed star[1]. The book Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc also has the same list of 9 moving stars and notes that among them only Lưu Thiên Mã and Lưu Lộc Tồn are relatively good, while the rest are bad[3]. In other words, the fixed Bạch Hổ in the chart and the Lưu Bạch Hổ in the annual fortune are two different layers of information and must be separated when interpreting.

How Is the Bạch Hổ Star Placed by the Earthly Branch of the Birth Year?

The rule for placing Bạch Hổ is simple: take the palace whose Earthly Branch matches the birth year, then count forward 9 palaces (including the starting palace as 1) and stop; that is the palace for Bạch Hổ.

The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học illustrates: for a person born in the year of Dần, place Thái Tuế at the Dần palace, then Thiếu Dương at Mão, Tang Môn at Thìn, Thiếu Âm at Tỵ, Quan Phù at Ngọ, Tử Phù at Mùi, Tuế Phá at Thân, Long Đức at Dậu, Bạch Hổ at Tuất, Phúc Đức at Hợi, Điếu Khách at Tý, Trực Phù at Sửu. Thus for the Dần age, Bạch Hổ is at Tuất, the 9th palace counting from Dần[4].

Below is a quick lookup table for Bạch Hổ's position by the Earthly Branch of the birth year, based on the rule of counting forward 9 palaces from the birth year palace:

How Do Bạch Hổ's Miếu, Vượng, and Hãm Positions Differ?

Here the books do not record the same thing. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên[1] and Tử Vi tổng hợp[3] only say that Bạch Hổ is đắc địa at Dần, Thân, Mão and Dậu, without separating miếu from vượng. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, in its passage on Bạch Hổ alone, gives miếu at Dậu and treats the Thân palace as vượng[4]. This book explains: Bạch Hổ at Dậu is the pattern "Hổ khiếu tây phương" (Tiger roaring in the West), like a tiger that is full and returns to its cave to rest, no longer dangerous, because Dậu is yin Metal, compatible with Bạch Hổ's Metal nature. Whereas Bạch Hổ at Dần and Mão is "hổ xuất sơn lâm" (tiger leaving the forest), like a tiger going out to the edge of the forest, possibly meeting many dangers.

Also according to this book, Bạch Hổ in a hãm position governs injury and accidents; in the Tật Ách palace it governs illnesses of the blood and phlegm, and with a hãm Thiên Hình it governs surgery and needling; in a miếu position the book describes a firm, heroic and brave temperament[4]. These are the book's readings, not a prediction of illness or accident for any particular person.

Regarding its position in the Thái Tuế circle, the book Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương has a passage discussing Bạch Hổ and Đường Phù: Bạch Hổ is a position in the Thái Tuế trine, carrying decisiveness, stopping at nothing to achieve its goal, though it has an altruistic flavor, it still aims to satisfy desire. This book also holds that Bạch Hổ and Đường Phù only meet in the six ages Bính, Đinh, Mậu, Kỷ, Nhâm, Quý, which is the scene of Lộc Tồn going against yin-yang, not a pattern of full enjoyment; while for the four ages Giáp, Ất, Canh, Tân, there is never Bạch Hổ Đường Phù[2].

What Is Bạch Hổ in the Thái Tuế Trine and the Phù Tuế Hổ Trio?

In the Thái Tuế circle, Bạch Hổ is often interpreted together with Thái Tuế and Quan Phù, called the Phù Tuế Hổ trio. The book Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương emphasizes the T cycle of the Thái Tuế Quan Phù Bạch Hổ vận, and asserts that the triangle Thái Tuế Quan Phù Bạch Hổ always contains Long Cái Phượng[2]. This is a view of the Thiên Lương school, not a common view of all Tử Vi schools.

Also according to this book, the Thái Tuế circle has four triangles: Thái Tuế, Tuế Phá, Thiếu Dương, and Thiếu Âm; but only the two triangles Thái Tuế and Tuế Phá are yin-yang compatible with the birth age. Therefore, the book concludes: a person whose Mệnh palace is of the type "tiền Cái hậu Mã" or "tiền Mã hậu Cái" is contrary to yin-yang[2]. This is a particular argument of the Thiên Lương school; readers should know it to distinguish it from other common interpretations.

Meaning of the Bạch Hổ Star According to Vietnamese Tử Vi Books

Bạch Hổ in Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học

The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử devotes quite a few passages to Bạch Hổ. The book states: Bạch Hổ belongs to Metal, is miếu at Dậu, vượng at Dần and Thân, is a bại tinh (defeat star), governing injury, accidents, and illness. When meeting Đường Phù and Tấu Thư, the book describes it as a tiger carrying a box of seals on a long journey, so both heroic and literary; when paired with Phượng Long and Hoa Cái to form the Tứ Linh set, it can control malefic stars, so when the annual fortune meets Tứ Linh, the misfortune is no longer worrisome[4].

According to the book, a hãm Tang Hổ governs loss of wealth and career; in Mệnh the book describes a dull, sad face and a tendency to lung and intestine ailments; meeting Kình Dương and Đà La it speaks of weak tendons and convulsions[4]. These are the book's words, recorded for reference, not a diagnosis for the reader.

A notable point is that Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học emphasizes basing Bạch Hổ interpretation on the Five Elements. The book writes: suppose the Mão palace contains many Wood stars, plus a Fire star, then Tham Lang Wood is strong enough to gather allies to rob Bạch Hổ Metal, because Fire makes Wood more brilliant and Fire controls Metal; conversely, if Bạch Hổ has additional Metal stars, it gains allies to destroy Tham Lang Wood. The book also states the principle: if Mệnh is Metal, it is compatible with Bạch Hổ, adding Metal stars means defeating Tham Lang; if Mệnh is Wood meeting many Wood stars, Bạch Hổ will die[4].

Regarding co-residence with main stars, this book holds that Bạch Hổ and Thiên Tướng at Dần and Mão are two generals who should not reside together, the mutual restraint increases. The book also gives an example of Bạch Hổ co-residing with Tham Lang at Mão, two stars together in a vượng position; the book adds that Tham Lang at Mão is commonly called the "hổ xuất lâm biên" pattern[4].

Bạch Hổ in Tử Vi tổng hợp

The book Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc mentions Bạch Hổ in specific combinations. The book writes: Bạch Hổ and Phi Liêm in the same palace are named Phi Hổ, meaning winged tiger, a good sign for creating wealth; in terms of career, it could be the field of air transport. The book also mentions the Tứ Linh set including Long Trì, Phượng Các, Bạch Hổ, Hoa Cái, very beautiful for wealth[3].

On its nature, Tử Vi tổng hợp writes that Bạch Hổ indicates ability in judgment and argument and a gift for political activity, most clearly when it is đắc địa at Dần, Thân, Mão or Dậu. The book also lists combinations: with Tấu Thư it indicates eloquence, with Kình Dương or Thiên Hình it indicates spirit and strategy, and with Long Trì, Phượng Các and Hoa Cái it indicates distinction in reputation and career[3].

Bạch Hổ in Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư

The book Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương discusses Bạch Hổ mainly in relation to Thái Tuế and Đường Phù. According to the book, Bạch Hổ is in the Thái Tuế trine and carries decisiveness; the book also advises people with Thái Tuế in the six ages Bính, Đinh, Mậu, Kỷ, Nhâm, Quý not to be too proud and consider Lộc Tồn's enjoyment as deserved reward, because when meeting Lộc or when Mệnh has Lộc Tồn, one must go through a period of meeting Bạch Hổ Đường Phù, and the scene of family and career ruin gradually appears[2]. This is an argument of the Thiên Lương school, quite pessimistic in tone; readers should consult other schools before concluding.

Bạch Hổ in Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên

The book Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang classes Tang Môn and Bạch Hổ as bại tinh, đắc địa at Dần, Thân, Mão and Dậu. It describes two combinations: Bạch Hổ with Tấu Thư in the same palace is "ví như Hổ đội hòm sắt" (like a tiger carrying an iron chest on its head), and with Phi Liêm in the same palace is "ví như Hổ mọc cánh" (like a tiger growing wings); the book takes both as favourable for examinations and the pursuit of rank[1]. On the moving stars, the book says Lưu Thái Tuế sits in the palace named after the year being examined, Lưu Tang Môn two palaces further on in the forward direction, and Lưu Bạch Hổ in the palace opposite Lưu Tang Môn. Its example is a Mùi year: Lưu Thái Tuế at Mùi, Lưu Tang Môn at Dậu, Lưu Bạch Hổ at Mão[1]. The book also notes that each moving star has the nature of the fixed star of the same name.

How to Distinguish Bạch Hổ in Tử Vi from Bạch Hổ in Feng Shui?

Bạch Hổ in Tử Vi must be distinguished from two other things of the same name. In loan đầu feng shui, Bạch Hổ is one of the four spirits (Thanh Long, Bạch Hổ, Chu Tước, Huyền Vũ) and refers to the landform to the right of the site. In Lục Hào, Bạch Hổ is one of the six spirits (lục thú), assigned to the six lines of a hexagram by the Heavenly Stem of the day of divination.

These are three different systems. Bạch Hổ in Tử Vi is an auxiliary star placed on the chart by the Earthly Branch of the birth year. Bạch Hổ in feng shui is a landform, and Bạch Hổ in Lục Hào is a spirit attached to a hexagram line. These concepts should not be confused when looking things up.

What Are Nhật Nguyệt's Suggestions When Interpreting Bạch Hổ?

When interpreting Bạch Hổ, one should not look at just one star and conclude. Bạch Hổ must be placed in the overall chart: palace position, palace Five Elements, co-residing and meeting stars, and other star circles such as the Lộc Tồn circle and Trường Sinh circle. The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học emphasizes basing on the Five Elements of Mệnh to interpret, and this is a principle to follow.

To find which palace Bạch Hổ occupies on a chart, one only needs the Earthly Branch of the lunar birth year and the table above, or a chart drawn with Nhật Nguyệt's Tử Vi tool, where the twelve stars of the Thái Tuế circle are already placed. When examining a single year, also look up Lưu Bạch Hổ by the branch of that year, not the birth year.

Finally, remember that Tử Vi is a traditional system of interpretation with many schools and many understandings. For the same Bạch Hổ star, each book may emphasize a different aspect. Learners should read many sources, compare with actual charts, and maintain a reasonable skepticism before any absolute assertion.

Frequently asked questions

What is the White Tiger star in Tử Vi (Vietnamese astrology) placed according to?

The White Tiger is placed according to the Earthly Branch of the birth year. Take the palace whose Earthly Branch matches the birth year, count forward 9 palaces (counting the starting palace as 1) and stop there: that is the palace where the White Tiger is placed. For example, for a person born in the year of the Tiger, the White Tiger is in the Dog palace.

Where is the White Tiger's miếu địa and where is its hãm địa?

Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi tổng hợp record that the White Tiger is đắc địa in Tiger, Monkey, Cat and Rooster. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử records that the White Tiger belongs to Metal, has its miếu địa in Rooster, and that the Monkey palace is its vượng địa; these books do not list the hãm palaces separately. Áo bí also likens the White Tiger residing in Tiger and Cat to a tiger leaving the mountain forest, like a tiger coming out to the edge of the forest, where it may meet many dangers.

Is the White Tiger an absolutely bad star?

The books do not regard it as such. Tử Vi tổng hợp calls the White Tiger sharing a palace with Phi Liêm a tiger with wings, and the White Tiger together with Long Trì, Phượng Các and Hoa Cái forms the Tứ Linh set. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học describes the White Tiger in its miếu địa as strong-willed and courageous, and only in its hãm địa as governing injury and accidents. It must be read within the whole chart, not by looking at a single star.
