What Is Điếu Khách in Tử Vi and What Each Book Says It Means

TL;DR: Điếu Khách is the eleventh of the twelve stars in the Thái Tuế (Grand Duke) cycle, placed by the birth-year branch, sitting two palaces back from the palace carrying the birth-year branch (year of the Mão: Thái Tuế in Mão, Điếu Khách in Sửu). According to Vietnamese Tử Vi (Vietnamese astrology) books: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên records the star as belonging to Hỏa, describing it as contemptuous of others, fond of showing off, pleasure-seeking, and tied to illness, accidents and mourning; Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records it as belonging to Kim, tied to speech, literature and diplomatic skill when Mã, Khốc and Khách come together; Tử Vi tổng hợp stresses gambling in the Tài palace; Thiên Lương (Celestial Beam) places it in the triple harmony of Tuế Phá (Year Breaker), Tang Môn (Mourning) and Điếu Khách (Mourning Guest). These are the readings of each book, not a scientific conclusion about human destiny.

What is Điếu Khách and where does it sit on the chart?

Điếu Khách is one of the twelve stars of the Thái Tuế cycle, a group placed according to the birth-year branch on a Tử Vi chart. This article presents the placement and the readings of Vietnamese Tử Vi, based on four books: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, Tử Vi tổng hợp and Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư. According to Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, Thái Tuế sits in the palace whose earthly branch matches the birth-year branch, and from there one star is placed per palace in the forward direction; Điếu Khách is the eleventh star in the cycle[1]. In other words, Điếu Khách lies ten palaces forward from Thái Tuế, that is, two palaces back from the Thái Tuế palace.

For example, a person born in the year of Mão has Thái Tuế in the Mão palace, Điếu Khách in the Sửu palace, and Tuế Phá in the Dậu palace opposite Thái Tuế. The three stars Tuế Phá, Tang Môn and Điếu Khách always stand in three palaces in trine with one another; Thiên Lương calls this trine the state of dissatisfaction[4].

The placement rule and the meanings given in this article are conventions and readings of the Tử Vi books, which differ from one another in places; they are not verified conclusions about character or destiny.

How Điếu Khách is placed and the Thái Tuế cycle

The Thái Tuế cycle contains twelve stars, placed by a fixed rule based on the birth-year earthly branch. Thái Tuế sits in the palace whose branch matches the birth-year branch, and the remaining stars in order are Thiếu Dương, Tang Môn, Thiếu Âm, Quan Phù, Tử Phù, Tuế Phá, Long Đức, Bạch Hổ, Phúc Đức, Điếu Khách and Trực Phù[1].

In Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư as presented by Thiên Lương, Khốc runs in reverse while Hư runs forward, and Hư alone never meets Thái Tuế but always has Tuế Phá alongside, forming the Phá Hư pair. The author also holds that because Khốc follows the reverse path, the yang palaces all carry the pair Thiên Mã and Điếu Khách, recorded in old texts as a horse with sounding music, an image of pride before the world[4].

However, Thiên Lương also notes that if only the Mã Khốc Khách set is present without Lộc Tồn, it always lies in a state of dissatisfaction, hard to reconcile with the image of pride. According to the author, the auspicious Lộc Mã Khốc Khách case occurs only for the two birth years Giáp and Canh, specifically Giáp Thân Tý Thìn and Canh Dần Ngọ Tuất[4]. This shows that the same set of stars changes meaning with the stars it meets, and cannot be read in isolation.

What does Điếu Khách mean in Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên?

Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang assigns Điếu Khách to Fire and describes the star as arrogant, boastful, careless in speech and fond of pleasure. On illness, the book says Điếu Khách governs illness, frailty, accidents and mourning[1].

The book also records the case of Điếu Khách meeting Tang Môn and Thiên Hình: according to the book, this brings unfortunate events such as traffic accidents, falls, illness and mourning[1]. This is the book's forecast, not something certain to happen to a person with this star.

The verse section of the same book has two lines that mention Điếu Khách. The first: when the Mệnh palace has Hư in command and meets Kình Dương, Thái Tuế and Điếu Khách in combination, it governs continuous mourning. The verse Khốc, Khách, Kiếp, Phủ mạc ngộ Cự, Dương, chung thân đa lệ is also cited in this book, meaning that if Mệnh has Khốc in command and also meets Khách, Kiếp, Phủ together with Cự Môn and Thái Dương, the person lives a lifetime in weeping and regret[1]. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records this line with the word Phù and explains Kiếp and Phù as Kiếp Sát and Tử Phù[2].

When Điếu Khách goes with Tang Môn and Tuế Phá

By the placement rule, Điếu Khách (birth-year branch plus ten palaces) is always in trine with Tang Môn (plus two) and Tuế Phá (plus six), and opposite Quan Phù (plus four). On the natal chart, therefore, Điếu Khách never shares a palace with, stands in trine with, or opposes Thái Tuế or Bạch Hổ. For a Mão year: Tang Môn is in Tỵ, Tuế Phá in Dậu, Điếu Khách in Sửu, and Quan Phù in Mùi.

Elsewhere Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên also records: Điếu Khách in the Tài Bạch palace means prolonged gambling; Thiên Mã meeting Khốc and Khách is likened to a horse wearing fine bells with a skilled rider; and in the table of stars matched to a funeral, Điếu Khách stands for the people who come to offer condolences[1].

What does Điếu Khách mean in Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học?

Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử assigns Điếu Khách to Metal, not Fire as in Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên. The book describes the star as governing speech and literary and poetic talent[2]. This is a clear difference between the two books, showing that even the element of a star is not absolutely agreed among Tử Vi researchers.

Tử Vi áo bí holds that a set of ruinous stars forms when Điếu Khách meets the two Hao, Tang Môn and Bạch Hổ, harming property and household and causing illness and injury. In the book's view, in a fallen position the bearer of this star tends to speak carelessly, is fond of pleasure, especially gambling, and is estranged from ancestors[2].

On the other side, Tử Vi áo bí records that when Điếu Khách meets Thiên Mã and Thiên Khốc at Mệnh, it governs a person with learning, eloquence, quickness and great skill in diplomacy. In the book, the image of Mã Khốc Khách is used to liken the person to a horse fully equipped with saddle, bridle and bells[2]. This is a far more positive view than that of Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên.

The verse Điếu khách Tang môn, Lộc Châu hữu truỵ lâu chi ách is also cited in the book, meaning that a person of Lộc Châu meets with a fall from a tower, because the period has Tang Môn in front and Điếu Khách and Thái Tuế behind meeting malefic stars[2]. This shows that Điếu Khách is usually read in relation to the stars of its cycle, not standing alone.

What does Điếu Khách mean in Tử Vi tổng hợp?

Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc mentions Điếu Khách mainly when discussing the Tài Bạch palace and gambling. It sets the star beside Văn Xương and Văn Khúc and says that while Xương Khúc gamble now and then, Điếu Khách gambles steadily[3]. That is, with Xương Khúc it is a passing pastime, while with Điếu Khách in the Tài palace the book treats it as a habit hard to drop.

In another section the book records Thiên Mã, Thiên Khốc and Điếu Khách gathering as the pattern of a fine horse with a skilled jockey, indicating good luck with property[3]. This reading ties Điếu Khách to money matters, unlike the mourning-heavy reading of Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên.

Điếu Khách in the Thái Tuế cycle according to Tử Vi nghiệm lý

Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương places Điếu Khách in the context of the Tang Môn Tuế Phá Điếu Khách trine, which the author calls the state of dissatisfaction. According to the book, a person in this position frequently has Thiên Mã, and Thiên Mã symbolises willpower; how much Thiên Mã helps also depends on the element of the star relative to the native's birth year[4].

The author also distinguishes three groups of positions within the Thái Tuế cycle: the Thái Tuế trine group holds the Long Phượng Hổ Cái set; the Tuế Phá Tang Môn Điếu Khách group holds the state of dissatisfaction; and the Thiếu Dương Tử Phù Phúc Đức group stands at a crossroads, meeting Tứ Đức if it chooses well and Thiên Không if it errs[4]. This grouping shows that Điếu Khách is never read alone but always within a cluster of stars with similar qualities.

Why does each book say something different about the same star?

The four books do not explain why they differ. Set side by side, each looks at Điếu Khách from one place: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên describes its general nature and forecasts; Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học stresses speech and the Mã Khốc Khách set; Tử Vi tổng hợp discusses it only in the Tài Bạch palace; Thiên Lương discusses only the standing of the whole trine. Even the star's element is recorded differently by two books: Fire and Metal.

It should be said clearly: these are interpretations within the scope of metaphysics, not scientific conclusions about human character or destiny.

Điếu Khách meeting different star sets

  • Meeting Tang Môn and Thiên Hình: according to Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, causes traffic accidents, falls, illness and mourning[1].
  • Meeting the two Hao, Tang and Hổ: according to Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, forms a set of ruinous stars harming property and household and causing illness and injury[2].
  • Meeting Mã and Khốc: according to Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, governs learning, eloquence and diplomatic skill[2]; according to Tử Vi tổng hợp, indicates good luck with property[3]; according to Thiên Lương, Lộc Tồn must be added for the pattern to hold[4].
  • Meeting Kình Dương, Thái Tuế and Thiên Hư: according to Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, governs continuous mourning[1].

What does Nhật Nguyệt suggest when reading Điếu Khách?

Điếu Khách is one star in the Tử Vi system, and any conclusion about it has value only within that system. Descriptions such as governing illness, mourning or gambling are the words of each book, not predictions about the fate of any particular person.

Gợi ý của Nhật Nguyệt: when looking up Điếu Khách on a chart, first find the birth-year branch to see which palace holds the star (two palaces back from the palace of the birth-year branch), then see which of the twelve palaces that is and which main star sits there. Điếu Khách always forms a trine with Tang Môn and Tuế Phá, so read what the books say about all three stars; and since each book describes the star differently, check which book an interpretation comes from.

Frequently asked questions

In which palace does the Điếu Khách star sit in a Tử Vi (Vietnamese astrology) chart?

Điếu Khách is the eleventh star in the Thái Tuế (Grand Duke) cycle. According to Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, the Thái Tuế star sits in the palace whose earthly branch matches the branch of the birth year, and from there the remaining stars are counted forward; Điếu Khách lies two palaces back from the Thái Tuế palace. For example, a person born in the year of the Mão has Thái Tuế in the Mão palace, so Điếu Khách is in the Sửu palace.

What element does Điếu Khách belong to?

The books do not agree. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang places Điếu Khách under Hỏa, while Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử places it under Kim. This is an example showing that even a star's element can differ between schools of books.

Is Điếu Khách an absolutely bad star?

No. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên likens Thiên Mã meeting Khốc and Khách to a horse wearing bells or else having a skilled rider, and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records the case where Điếu Khách meets Mã and Khốc at the Mệnh palace, which then governs learning, eloquence and skill in diplomacy. A star's meaning changes with the stars it meets and the palace it occupies; no star is absolutely good or bad.
