TL;DR: Trực Phù is the twelfth star, the last of the Thái Tuế cycle. It is placed by the birth-year branch, sits one palace back from the Thái Tuế palace (for a Dần year: Thái Tuế in Dần, Trực Phù in Sửu) and always opposes Tử Phù; according to Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, Quán Sách is always in the same palace as Trực Phù. Across Vietnamese Tử Vi books: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên groups Tử Phù and Trực Phù into one entry, describing them as sorrowful, governing mourning, and causing trouble and obstruction; Tử Vi áo bí records that the two stars govern illness; Tử Vi tổng hợp lists Trực Phù among the ám tinh; Thiên Lương treats Thiếu Âm, Long Đức and Trực Phù as the configuration of disadvantage. These are each book's own reading, not a scientific conclusion about fate.
What Is Trực Phù in Tử Vi?
Trực Phù is the twelfth star of the Thái Tuế cycle, the star that closes a ring of twelve stars placed by birth year. This article presents the placement and the readings of Vietnamese Tử Vi, based on four books: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư and Tử Vi tổng hợp. According to Việt Viêm Tử's Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, the Thái Tuế cycle contains exactly twelve stars, placed one per palace in sequence: Thái Tuế, Thiếu Dương, Tang Môn, Thiếu Âm, Quan Phù, Tử Phù, Tuế Phá, Long Đức, Bạch Hổ, Phúc Đức, Điếu Khách, Trực Phù[1]. In other words, Trực Phù is the final stopping point of a chain of stars running around the twelve palaces, beginning at the palace whose earthly branch matches the birth year.
This is one of the secondary stars, not a principal star, so interpretations usually place it in relation to the principal star occupying the palace and to the stars in the same group. Understanding Trực Phù apart from the Thái Tuế cycle is nearly impossible, because its meaning largely forms from its relative position to Thái Tuế and its neighbouring stars.
Where Does Trực Phù Sit in the Thái Tuế Cycle and How Is It Placed?
The method of placing Trực Phù is recorded clearly in Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học. After placing Thái Tuế at the palace whose earthly branch matches the birth year, one places Thiên Không and Thiếu Dương in the palace immediately before Thái Tuế, then places Quán Sách and Trực Phù in the palace immediately after Thái Tuế[1]. Put simply, Trực Phù sits in the palace immediately after Thái Tuế, that is, one palace back from the Thái Tuế palace (eleven palaces if counted forward).
A specific example from the book: if Thái Tuế is in the Dần palace, then Thiên Không and Thiếu Dương are placed in the Mão palace, while Quán Sách and Trực Phù are placed in the Sửu palace[1]. The table below gives the palace of Trực Phù for each birth-year branch, together with the palace of Tử Phù, the star always opposite it:
| Birth year (earthly branch) | Thái Tuế at | Trực Phù (and Quán Sách) at | Tử Phù at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tý | Tý | Hợi | Tỵ |
| Sửu | Sửu | Tý | Ngọ |
| Dần | Dần | Sửu | Mùi |
| Mão | Mão | Dần | Thân |
| Thìn | Thìn | Mão | Dậu |
| Tỵ | Tỵ | Thìn | Tuất |
| Ngọ | Ngọ | Tỵ | Hợi |
| Mùi | Mùi | Ngọ | Tý |
| Thân | Thân | Mùi | Sửu |
| Dậu | Dậu | Thân | Dần |
| Tuất | Tuất | Dậu | Mão |
| Hợi | Hợi | Tuất | Thìn |
One notable point is that although students recite all twelve stars in order, in practice when placing stars on a chart Thiếu Dương is placed together with Thiên Không, and Trực Phù is placed together with Quán Sách[1]. By this book's placement, therefore, Trực Phù always has Quán Sách in the same palace. The placement section of Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên does not record a star named Quán Sách.
The book also records a mnemonic verse: "Tuế tiền nhất vị thị Thiên Thiếu, hậu nhất vị Quán Sách, Trực Phù", meaning one palace before Thái Tuế are Thiên Không and Thiếu Dương, one palace after Thái Tuế are Quán Sách and Trực Phù[1]. This mnemonic helps students locate the stars quickly without counting from the start.
What Does Trực Phù Sharing a Palace with Quán Sách Mean?
In Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, Quán Sách is an accompanying star that always shares a palace with Trực Phù; the book records Thiên Không and Quán Sách as belonging to Hỏa, standing before and after Thái Tuế[1]. As for Trực Phù itself, the book treats it together with Tử Phù in one short entry: both belong to Hỏa and govern illness; in the entry on Thiên Riêu and Thiên Y, the book calls Quan Phù and Trực Phù the lưỡng Phù[1].
The four books used in this article have no separate reading for Quán Sách sharing a palace with Trực Phù. It is a feature of one book's placement method, not a named pattern that the books interpret.
Why Is Trực Phù Classified Among Stars of Sorrow?
Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang records Trực Phù as belonging to Hỏa and describes it very briefly: sorrowful, governing mourning, causing trouble and obstructing all matters[2]. This is a fairly heavy description, and it should be read in the context of a book that lists many secondary stars in a condensed manner, a few lines each, mainly to let students grasp the tendency quickly.
That entry is a joint entry for Tử Phù and Trực Phù, that is, the book does not separate the two stars[2]. By the placement rule, Tử Phù (birth-year branch plus five palaces) is always opposite Trực Phù (plus eleven), so on every chart the two stars face each other directly.
It should be stated clearly that this is the classification of one school, not an absolute conclusion about a person's fate. The same star, placed in different combinations, can yield very different readings.
How Is the Thiếu Âm Long Đức Trực Phù Configuration Understood?
In Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư, Thiên Lương has a passage on the standing of the Mệnh palace by birth-year triple harmony. According to the book, for the three birth years Tỵ, Dậu and Sửu, when there are four Tỵ, four Dậu or four Sửu (that is, year, month, day and hour of birth share one branch), the Mệnh palace is always in a position of disadvantage and poor treatment, and that position is named Trực Phù, Thiếu Âm and Long Đức[3].
In the same passage, the book compares the other cases, under the same condition of four pillars sharing one branch: for the three birth years Thân, Tý and Thìn, the Mệnh lies in the Thái Tuế triple harmony, the case the book regards as fine; for Dần, Ngọ and Tuất, the Mệnh is in a position of dissatisfaction with Tuế Phá, Tang Môn and Điếu Khách; for Hợi, Mão and Mùi, the Mệnh is in a dominant position with Thiếu Dương, Tử Phù, Phúc Đức and Thiên Không[3].
Elsewhere Thiên Lương describes a person in the Thiếu Âm, Long Đức, Trực Phù position as someone willing to work but ill-fated, often treated poorly by the world[3]. The book thus reads Trực Phù not as an isolated star but as one of three positions of the same standing.
Thiếu Âm, Long Đức, Trực Phù and the Yin-Yang Paradox with Age
In Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư, Thiên Lương discusses this trio's relation to age in more depth. According to the book, Thiếu Dương and Thiếu Âm are two positions in a yin-yang paradox with age. On the Thiếu Dương side, when it falls into a state of receiving or overcoming, this star usually holds the advantage, and that very advantage makes people prone to underestimate and then abuse it. On the Thiếu Âm side, when standing in the Long Đức Trực Phù position, every path is unfavourable, so Hồng Loan and Thiên Hỷ must take turns carrying part of the consolation and encouragement[3].
In the book's understanding, the Thiếu Âm, Long Đức, Trực Phù position is one of disadvantage, and the book writes that a person in this position, though treated poorly by the world, on waking up to it still finds brightness because Hồng Loan adorns it[3]. The book also notes that Hồng Loan and Thiên Hỷ both stand in a yin-yang paradox with the birth year and are symmetrical to each other, meaning they have different duties depending on circumstances[3].
How Do Thiên Lương and Tân biên Differ on Trực Phù?
The two views of Trực Phù have different focuses. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang describes Trực Phù mainly by its star nature: sorrow, mourning, trouble, obstruction[2]. Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương places Trực Phù in the standing of the Mệnh palace by birth-year triple harmony, and names that position as one of disadvantage and poor treatment[3].
One could say Tân biên leans toward describing the star's nature, while Thiên Lương leans toward describing the star's position in the chart structure. The two approaches do not contradict each other, but place the emphasis differently. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records yet another angle: Trực Phù together with Tử Phù governs illness[1].
Is Trực Phù an Absolutely Bad Star?
The books do not treat Trực Phù as an absolutely bad star, but as a star with an unfavourable tendency. In Tử Vi tổng hợp, Nguyễn Phát Lộc lists Trực Phù among the stars regarded as ám tinh, the group the book ties to competition, trouble and obstruction[4].
In other words, Trực Phù is a component in a combination, not an independent cause of results. In interpretation, it should be placed beside the principal star, beside the stars in the same group, and beside the palace it occupies. A Trực Phù in a palace with a strong principal star and many auspicious stars meeting it will be understood quite differently from a Trực Phù in a palace with a weak principal star and many malefic stars.
Nhật Nguyệt's Suggestions for Interpreting Trực Phù
When encountering Trực Phù in a chart, first determine which palace it shares with Quán Sách, and which principal star occupies that palace. The second step is to check whether that palace lies in triple harmony or opposition with the Mệnh, Thân, or other important palaces. The third step is to look at the stars that meet it, especially the stars of the Tứ Đức group and Hồng Loan, Thiên Hỷ.
With the Thiếu Âm, Long Đức, Trực Phù position, read Thiên Lương's own words above and remember that this is one author's reading. Each book describes Trực Phù differently, so when meeting an interpretation, check which book it comes from.
It should be repeated that Tử Vi is an interpretive system for reference, not a tool of certain prediction. All conclusions about fate, finances, or health should be checked against reality and should not be taken as fixed destiny.
