TL;DR: The Phúc Đức star is the tenth of the 12 stars in the Thái Tuế cycle, placed according to the birth year's branch, always nine palaces forward from the Thái Tuế palace (for someone born in the year of the Tiger: Thái Tuế in Tiger, Phúc Đức in Pig); it is a star, distinct from the Phúc Đức palace. According to Vietnamese Tử Vi books, Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học group Phúc Đức with Long Đức, Thiên Đức and Nguyệt Đức into the Tứ Đức set, describing them as virtue, kindness, and the dispelling of illness and disaster; Tử Vi tổng hợp holds instead that the illness-dispelling effect of the Tứ Đức is insignificant. This is a convention of the Tử Vi discipline, not a scientific conclusion about human destiny.
What is Sao Phúc Đức in the Thái Tuế cycle?
Sao Phúc Đức is one of the 12 stars belonging to the Thái Tuế cycle, the group of stars placed by the earthly branch of the birth year rather than by birth day or hour. This article presents the placement and the readings of Vietnamese Tử Vi, based on four books: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư and Tử Vi tổng hợp. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử lists this cycle as exactly 12 stars, placed clockwise one star per palace: Thái Tuế, Thiếu Dương, Tang Môn, Thiếu Âm, Quan Phù, Tử Phù, Tuế Phá, Long Đức, Bạch Hổ, Phúc Đức, Điếu Khách, Trực Phù[1].
Two things often confused must be kept apart: the star Phúc Đức and the Phúc Đức palace. The Phúc Đức palace is one of the 12 fixed palaces of the chart, speaking of family blessing and spiritual life. The star Phúc Đức is a moving star, running by birth year, and can sit in any of the 12 palaces. This article discusses the star, not the palace.
According to Thiên Lương, the Thái Tuế cycle is the cycle governed by the earthly branch, shaping a person's standing in society; within it Thái Tuế, Quan Phù and Bạch Hổ are described as the heavy duties one must carry[3].
How is Sao Phúc Đức placed by birth year?
The placement rule is simple: place Thái Tuế in the palace bearing the earthly branch of the birth year, then count clockwise, one star per palace, in the exact order of the 12 stars. Phúc Đức is the 10th star in the sequence, so it always lies 9 palaces clockwise from Thái Tuế.
Tử Vi áo bí gives this example: for a person born in the year of Dần, Thái Tuế is placed in the Dần palace; counting clockwise, Thiếu Dương is in Mão, Tang Môn in Thìn, Thiếu Âm in Tỵ, Quan Phù in Ngọ, Tử Phù in Mùi, Tuế Phá in Thân, Long Đức in Dậu, Bạch Hổ in Tuất, Phúc Đức in Hợi, Điếu Khách in Tý, Trực Phù in Sửu[1].
| Birth-year earthly branch (Thái Tuế) | Tý | Sửu | Dần | Mão | Thìn | Tỵ | Ngọ | Mùi | Thân | Dậu | Tuất | Hợi |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Palace of Phúc Đức | Dậu | Tuất | Hợi | Tý | Sửu | Dần | Mão | Thìn | Tỵ | Ngọ | Mùi | Thân |
The table follows directly from the rule of counting 9 palaces clockwise from Thái Tuế. It can be cross-checked by counting 3 palaces counter-clockwise, since 9 palaces clockwise equals 3 palaces counter-clockwise within a cycle of 12. For instance, a person born in the year of Tý has Thái Tuế in Tý, 9 palaces clockwise reaches Dậu, and 3 palaces counter-clockwise (Hợi, Tuất, Dậu) also reaches Dậu.
The book adds a practical detail: when marking stars on the hand or on a chart, the book says to place Thiên Không in the same palace as Thiếu Dương, and Quán Sách in the same palace as Trực Phù; Thiên Không and Quán Sách are not among the 12 stars of the cycle[1].
The tam hợp of Thiếu Dương, Tử Phù and Phúc Đức
By the counting above, Phúc Đức always combines with Thiếu Dương and Tử Phù into a tam hợp. These three palaces are exactly 4 palaces apart, forming an even tam hợp within the 12 palaces.
For a person born in the year of Dần, that tam hợp is Mão (Thiếu Dương), Mùi (Tử Phù) and Hợi (Phúc Đức). This is a useful memory aid: remembering the Phúc Đức palace alone yields the other two palaces of the tam hợp without recounting from the start.
Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang describes Tử Phù and Trực Phù as both belonging to the Hỏa element, governing sorrow, mourning, trouble and obstruction of work[2].
Which stars make up the Tứ Đức set?
The Tứ Đức set in Tử Vi consists of four stars: Thiên Đức, Nguyệt Đức, Long Đức and Phúc Đức. Notably, these four stars do not lie in the same cycle: Thiên Đức and Nguyệt Đức are placed by birth year but stand outside the Thái Tuế cycle, while Long Đức and Phúc Đức lie within the Thái Tuế cycle.
Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên records the placement of Thiên Đức and Nguyệt Đức: Thiên Đức starts from the Dậu palace counted as the year of Tý, counting clockwise to the birth year; Nguyệt Đức starts from the Tỵ palace counted as the year of Tý, also counting clockwise to the birth year[2]. Tử Vi áo bí records the same two placements, with the example that a person born in the year of Dần has Nguyệt Đức in Mùi and Thiên Đức in Hợi[1]. The two books agree on this point. By that rule, Thiên Đức always shares a palace with Phúc Đức (both lie nine palaces clockwise from the birth-year branch), while Nguyệt Đức always shares a palace with Tử Phù, that is, a palace in tam hợp with Phúc Đức.
As for the elements of the four stars, Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên assigns Long Đức to Thủy and Phúc Đức to Thổ, grouping them together in its description of their qualities[2]. Tử Vi áo bí records Thiên Đức and Nguyệt Đức as both belonging to Hỏa, Long Đức to Thủy, and Phúc Đức to Thổ[1].
Why is it called Tứ Đức?
Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương explains the Tứ Đức set in terms of yin and yang: Thiên Đức is yang, Nguyệt Đức is yin, corresponding to the two principles of lưỡng nghi; Long Đức is Thiếu Âm, Phúc Đức is Thiếu Dương, corresponding to the four images[3]. In this reading, the Tứ Đức extends from the cosmic level down to lineage and individual, and all four stars converge on the Thái Tuế cycle, the cycle governed by the earthly branch[3].
This is one school's interpretation, not a historical fact. Readers should treat it as an interpretive frame that helps recall and relate the stars to one another.
The meaning of Sao Phúc Đức in each book
Vietnamese Tử Vi books do not fully agree on Phúc Đức: three books describe the Tứ Đức set in terms of virtue and relief, while Tử Vi tổng hợp rates its power against illness as low. Each book's own statement follows.
Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên groups Long Đức and Phúc Đức into one section, describing them as having virtue, uprightness, harmony, benevolence and charity, and as warding off illness and misfortune[2]. The book also says that when they meet Thiên Đức and Nguyệt Đức, the four stars form the Tứ Đức set, which restrains the romantic and lustful nature of Đào Hoa and Hồng Loan[2].
Tử Vi áo bí describes the Tứ Đức set of Thiên, Nguyệt, Long and Phúc Đức as governing tolerance, benevolence, uprightness and charity, and calls Thiên Đức and Nguyệt Đức the pair of lưỡng Đức[1]. The book writes that when the lưỡng Đức enter Thân and Mệnh they reduce calamity and dangerous illness, and the person is upright and compassionate; joined by Long Đức and Phúc Đức they form the Tứ Đức set, and the four stars are called phúc thiện tinh[1].
On interaction with Đào Hoa and Hồng Loan, Tử Vi áo bí notes that meeting Hồng Đào still carries a lustful nature, but it is "chính dâm" rather than an affair; in a female chart, this configuration indicates a person who is fresh, charming and skilled in courteous conduct[1].
Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư places the Tứ Đức in a broader context: it holds that the Tứ Đức is a "common virtue", extending from the cosmos down to a lineage, and is a principle to be judged according to circumstance[3]. This writing leans toward philosophy rather than listing each star's function.
Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc treats the Tứ Đức as stars that stand for moral awareness in matters of love, holds that all four must gather for the effect to be strong enough, and writes that the power of the Tứ Đức against illness is negligible[4]. This differs from Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, which records Long Đức and Phúc Đức as removing illness and misfortune.
| Book | Name for the star set | Main qualities stated |
|---|---|---|
| Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên | Long Đức, Phúc Đức (grouped); Tứ Đức when all four meet | Virtue, uprightness, harmony, benevolence, charity; warding off illness and misfortune; restraining the romantic nature of Đào Hồng |
| Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học | Tứ Đức (Thiên, Nguyệt, Long, Phúc Đức) | Tolerance, benevolence, uprightness, good fortune; entering Thân Mệnh reduces calamity and dangerous illness |
| Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư | Tứ Đức converging on the Thái Tuế cycle | Common virtue from the cosmos to the lineage; a principle to be judged according to circumstance |
| Tử Vi tổng hợp | Tứ Đức (Long Đức, Nguyệt Đức, Phúc Đức, Thiên Đức) | Moral awareness in matters of love; all four must gather; negligible power against illness |
How does Phúc Đức differ from Long Đức?
These two stars are often grouped together because both lie in the Thái Tuế cycle and both belong to the Tứ Đức set, but they occupy different palaces and are described differently.
Long Đức lies immediately after Tuế Phá in the 12-star sequence, while Phúc Đức lies after Bạch Hổ. In the Dần-year example above, Long Đức is in Dậu and Phúc Đức in Hợi.
Although Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên groups the two stars into one section, it still separates their elements: Long Đức belongs to Thủy, Phúc Đức to Thổ[2]. As for position, the two stars are two palaces apart, so they are neither in tam hợp nor in opposition; according to Thiên Lương, Long Đức belongs to the tam hợp of Thiếu Âm, and Phúc Đức to the tam hợp of Thiếu Dương[3].
One point to note when consulting: Tử Vi áo bí uses the name "Thiên Phúc" in the section on Thiên Quan and Thiên Phúc, placed by the heavenly stem of the birth year, and this is a different star from Phúc Đức of the Thái Tuế cycle[1]. Beginners easily confuse the two names. Thiên Quan and Thiên Phúc are a pair placed by their own verse, while Phúc Đức is the 10th star of the Thái Tuế cycle.
What to keep in mind when reading Sao Phúc Đức in a chart?
Sao Phúc Đức does not stand alone. By the placement above, the palace holding Phúc Đức always holds Thiên Đức as well, has Thiếu Dương and Tử Phù (with Nguyệt Đức) in the two tam hợp palaces, and has Thiếu Âm in the opposite palace; Long Đức does not gather to this palace. Thiên Lương likewise writes that the tam hợp of Thiếu Dương holds Thiên Đức, Nguyệt Đức and Phúc Đức, while Long Đức stands opposite the Thiếu Dương palace[3]. The Phúc Đức palace of the chart is a separate matter: the star Phúc Đức falls in the Phúc Đức palace only when that palace lies nine palaces clockwise from the palace of the birth-year branch.
Gợi ý của Nhật Nguyệt: when looking up Sao Phúc Đức on a chart, first find the birth-year branch to see which palace holds the star (table above), then see which of the 12 palaces of the chart that is and which main star sits there. Only then look at the tam hợp and opposite palaces to see how many of the Tứ Đức stars gather. Each book describes the star differently, so when reading an interpretation, check which book it comes from.
Why is the Thái Tuế cycle important in Tử Vi?
The Thái Tuế cycle consists of 12 stars placed by the earthly branch of the birth year, so it reflects the relation between the individual and that person's own birth year, unlike cycles placed by month, day or hour.
Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư holds that the Thái Tuế cycle together with the Lộc Tồn cycle and the Tràng Sinh cycle should be checked for whether they are "arranged in harmony" or must offset one another to reach the overall level of the chart, along with whether Mệnh follows yin-yang[3].
The book also places the Thái Tuế cycle within the framework of the three powers Thiên, Nhân and Địa: meeting a good period, that is, entering a tam hợp Thái Tuế limit, still brings opportunity even when meeting Không Kiếp; only then does one consider nhân hòa and địa lợi[3]. This is the book's interpretation, not a binding rule for all schools.
Overall, Vietnamese Tử Vi books all place Phúc Đức in the group of stars governing virtue and protection. The differences lie mainly in which book emphasizes the power of warding off calamity and which emphasizes the philosophical layer, and which rates the power against illness as negligible. These readings are all conventions of the Tử Vi system, and readers should treat this as a symbolic system for reflection, not a firm statement about the destiny or health of any specific person.
