What Is Quan Phù in Tử Vi? How to Place It by the Thái Tuế Cycle and Its Meaning

TL;DR: Quan Phù is the fifth star in the Thái Tuế cycle of 12 stars, placed forward from the palace named with the Earthly Branch of the birth year, four palaces from Grand Duke. The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học describes Quan Phù as belonging to the Fire element, governing intelligence, strategy and authority, compatible with Grand Duke, Year Breaker, or with the stars Cơ, Lương, Tang, Hổ, Hình in a miếu địa where it becomes even more brilliant, while when meeting Grand Duke, Spinning Camel, Thiên Hình, Hóa Kỵ in a hãm địa the book says it easily runs into gossip and disputes in official matters. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang also records that Quan Phù belongs to Fire, tied to judgment, reasoning and legal matters. This is the placement and understanding according to Vietnamese Tử Vi books, not a fixed conclusion about destiny.

What Is Quan Phù and Where Does It Sit in the Chart?

Quan Phù is an auxiliary star in Tử Vi, the fifth member of the Thái Tuế cycle of twelve stars. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử lists this cycle in order: Thái Tuế, Thiếu Dương, Tang Môn, Thiếu Âm, Quan Phù, Tử Phù, Tuế Phá, Long Đức, Bạch Hổ, Phúc Đức, Điếu Khách, Trực Phù. The placement is the same in both Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học: first place Thái Tuế in the palace named by the birth year branch, then move clockwise, one star per palace, in the order above[1][2].

Since Quan Phù is fifth in the sequence, it always sits exactly four palaces clockwise from Thái Tuế. A person born in the year of Dần has Thái Tuế at Dần, Thiếu Dương at Mão, Tang Môn at Thìn, Thiếu Âm at Tỵ, and Quan Phù at Ngọ. This is a fixed rule, independent of gender or yin-yang of the native, unlike the Lộc Tồn cycle which is placed by heavenly stem and then divided into forward or reverse depending on yang male, yin female, or yin male, yang female.

Quan Phù must be distinguished from Quan Phủ, the last star of the Lộc Tồn cycle. After placing Lộc Tồn, yang males and yin females go clockwise, yin males and yang females go counterclockwise, placing in turn Lực Sỹ, Thanh Long, Tiểu Hao, Tướng Quân, Tấu Thư, Phi Liêm, Hỷ Thần, Bệnh Phù, Đại Hao, Phục Binh, and finally Quan Phủ. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học and Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc both write the last star of the Lộc Tồn cycle as Quan Phủ, while Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên treats the two stars in two separate entries. The two stars belong to different cycles and are placed differently, and when interpreting one must know which cycle is being discussed.

How Is Quan Phù Placed by the Thái Tuế Cycle?

The placement rule is very simple and can be checked by hand. Take the palace named by the birth year branch as the starting point, place Thái Tuế there. Then count clockwise around the twelve Earthly Branches, one star per palace, in the fixed order. Quan Phù always falls in the fifth palace counting from Thái Tuế.

Birth year (Branch)Thái Tuế palaceQuan Phù palace

ThìnThìnThân
TỵTỵDậu

The table above is simply the arithmetic consequence of counting four palaces clockwise from Thái Tuế, directly derivable from the placement described in Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học. Learners need only remember one sentence: Quan Phù is the fifth star of the Thái Tuế cycle, after Thiếu Âm and before Tử Phù.

What Does Quan Phù Mean According to Vietnamese Tử Vi Books?

Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử records: Quan Phù belongs to the Fire element, ruling intelligence, strategy and authority. This is a concise definition with three layers of meaning. Intelligence is the personality trait, strategy is the ability to calculate and arrange, authority is the aspect of power and position. These three layers are not separate but are usually read as one block: a person with Quan Phù is described as resourceful and inclined toward public office.

The same book adds notes on combinations. Quan Phù is very compatible with Thái Tuế and Tuế Phá, or when meeting Thiên Cơ, Thiên Lương, Tang Môn, Bạch Hổ, Thiên Hình in miếu địa, it enhances the brilliance in literature, military affairs, and the qualities of those stars. Conversely, when meeting Thái Tuế, Đà La, Thiên Hình, Hóa Kỵ while in hãm địa, the book says imprisonment or disputes in public office are hard to avoid, and cites the verse "Quan Phù Tấu Tuế một đoàn, Đêm ngày chầu chực cửa quan mỏi mòn".

It should be noted this is the reading of a specific school. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang also gives Quan Phù as Fire but stresses another side: the book describes the star as "Biết xét đoán, lý luận. Hay giúp đỡ" (able to judge and reason, inclined to help), ruling disputes, lawsuits and matters connected with the law; with Văn Xương, Văn Khúc and Thái Tuế the book counts it favorable for legal matters, with Thái Tuế, Đà La and Hóa Kỵ it counts it as trouble and obstruction[1]. Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc groups Thái Tuế, Quan Phù and Quan Phủ as the set typical of the legal field and of matters connected with the law[4]. Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương places the Thái Tuế cycle in a different theoretical framework, viewing it as a time cycle to gauge favorable or difficult periods for each major and minor period, emphasizes the triangle of Thái Tuế, Quan Phù, Bạch Hổ, and describes a person whose Mệnh sits at the Quan Phù position as one who "có ý tứ tính toán kỹ càng" (weighs things carefully)[3]. Thus, the same star is placed in different reference systems by each book.

How Is Quan Phù Read When Meeting Thái Tuế and Tuế Phá?

In the reading of Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, Quan Phù is compatible with Thái Tuế and Tuế Phá[2]. By position, these three stars never share a palace: Quan Phù is always in tam hợp with Thái Tuế, while Tuế Phá always sits opposite Thái Tuế and two palaces away from Quan Phù. Tử Vi tổng hợp likewise records that Thái Tuế is always in a trine with Quan Phù. The verse cited by Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học speaks of Quan Phù together with Tấu Thư and Thái Tuế, tied to the image of waiting at the mandarin's gate.

Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương also mentions the triangle of Thái Tuế, Quan Phù, Bạch Hổ and says that within this triangle there is always Long Cái Phượng accompanying. This is a structural observation, not actionable advice. The book also distinguishes four different triangles of the Thái Tuế cycle: the Thái Tuế triangle, the Tuế Phá triangle (with Mã Hư), the Thiếu Dương triangle (with Đào Không Sát), the Thiếu Âm triangle (with Long Đức), and states that only the Thái Tuế and Tuế Phá triangles are yin-yang compatible with the birth year.

Thus, when interpreting Quan Phù, one should not separate it from its cycle. On every chart it is in tam hợp with Thái Tuế and Bạch Hổ, and stands between Thiếu Âm and Tử Phù. This is also the general principle emphasized by Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc: same-palace combination makes meanings stronger and more direct, opposition has strong connection, trine is weaker, and nhị hợp or giáp is even more indirect.

What Happens When Quan Phù Meets Đà La, Thiên Hình, Hóa Kỵ?

According to Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, when Quan Phù meets Thái Tuế, Đà La, Thiên Hình and Hóa Kỵ while in hãm địa, imprisonment or disputes in public office are hard to avoid. This sentence should be read as it is: a warning from the book, not a prediction. The book uses "hard to avoid" within its theoretical framework, while modern interpreters often read it as a tendency to note rather than fixed fate.

Another point to distinguish: Quan Phù does not mean the native will become an official, nor does it mean lawsuits will occur. It is one variable in the whole chart. Concluding from a single star does not fit the approach of Tử Vi tổng hợp, which holds that a pattern is the synthesis of many small traits into a larger style, and interpreters must find important patterns rather than stop at individual stars.

Why Is Quan Phù Usually Mentioned with the Thái Tuế Cycle Rather Than Alone?

The Thái Tuế cycle is a system of twelve stars fixed by birth year, so Quan Phù's position is completely determined before considering any other star. This makes it different from auxiliary stars placed by heavenly stem, by Cục, or by gender. Because of this fixed nature, books usually read Quan Phù in relation to stars of the same cycle rather than interpreting it alone.

Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương pushes this further by viewing the Thái Tuế cycle as a time concept, used to gauge favorable or difficult periods for the ten-year major period and one-year minor period. In this reading, Quan Phù is not just a static star on the original chart but also a marker in the flow of periods. This is the understanding of the Thiên Lương school.

Nhật Nguyệt's Suggestion: How to Read Quan Phù Reasonably?

Nhật Nguyệt's suggestion: when looking up a chart, the first step is to determine whether the star in question is Quan Phù of the Thái Tuế cycle or Quan Phủ of the Lộc Tồn cycle, as these two similarly named stars are placed in two different ways. The second step is to check the position: Quan Phù must sit exactly four palaces clockwise from the palace of the birth year branch, in tam hợp with Thái Tuế and Bạch Hổ. The third step is to consider the occupying palace and meeting stars, because according to Tử Vi tổng hợp, same-palace is stronger than opposition, opposition stronger than trine, trine stronger than nhị hợp and giáp.

Frequently asked questions

In which palace is the Quan Phù star placed in Tử Vi?

Quan Phù is the fifth star in the Thái Tuế cycle. After placing Grand Duke at the palace named with the Earthly Branch of the birth year, count forward one star per palace in the order Thái Tuế, Thiếu Dương, Tang Môn, Thiếu Âm, Quan Phù. So Quan Phù always sits four palaces forward from Grand Duke, for example a person born in the year of the Tiger has Quan Phù at Ngọ.

What element does Quan Phù belong to and what does it govern?

The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử records that Quan Phù belongs to the Fire element and governs intelligence, strategy and authority. This book holds that Quan Phù is compatible with Grand Duke, Year Breaker, or when meeting Thiên Cơ, Thiên Lương, Tang Môn, Bạch Hổ, Thiên Hình in a miếu địa it becomes even more brilliant, while when meeting Grand Duke, Spinning Camel, Thiên Hình, Hóa Kỵ in a hãm địa the book says it easily runs into gossip and disputes in official matters. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang also records that Quan Phù belongs to Fire and governs gossip, lawsuits and matters related to law.

How do Quan Phù and Quan Phủ differ in a Tử Vi chart?

They are two stars of two different cycles. Quan Phù belongs to the Thái Tuế cycle, placed according to the Earthly Branch of the birth year, and always sits four palaces forward from Grand Duke. Quan Phủ is the last star of the Lộc Tồn cycle, placed after Lộc Tồn going forward or backward depending on whether the person is a yang male or yin female, or yin male or yang female. Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc treats the two stars as close in meaning and often interprets them together with Grand Duke, but their positions in the chart must be placed separately.
