How is the Tướng Quân star in the Bác Sĩ ring placed according to the year stem?

Traditional systems An old interpretive system.

How is the Tướng Quân star in the Bác Sĩ ring placed according to the year stem?

TL;DR: The Tướng Quân star belongs to the Lộc Tồn ring, also called the Bác Sĩ ring. To place it, set Lộc Tồn and Bác Sĩ in the palace given by the year stem (Giáp at Dần, Ất at Mão, Bính and Mậu at Tỵ, Đinh and Kỷ at Ngọ, Canh at Thân, Tân at Dậu, Nhâm at Hợi, Quý at Tý), then count four palaces: forward for a dương male or âm female, backward for an âm male or dương female. For example, a Giáp man has Tướng Quân at Ngọ, a Giáp woman at Tuất. This is a convention of Tử Vi, not an astronomical fact.

What is the Tướng Quân star in the Bác Sĩ cycle?

Tướng Quân (General) is a star of the Lộc Tồn cycle, also called the Bác Sĩ cycle. According to Tử Vi khảo luận by Hoàng Thường and Hàm Chương, after Lộc Tồn and Bác Sĩ the stars of the cycle follow in this order: Lực Sĩ, Thanh Long, Tiểu Hao, Tướng Quân, Tấu Thư, Phi Liêm, Hỉ Thần, Bệnh Phù, Đại Hao, Phục Binh and Quan Phủ[1].

Tướng Quân should not be confused with Đại Tướng Quân of day-selection lore. According to Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư, Đại Tướng Quân is a year spirit that moves once every three years and only occupies one of the four cardinal directions; it has nothing to do with Tướng Quân on a Tử Vi chart. This article deals only with Tướng Quân in the Lộc Tồn cycle.

How to place the Tướng Quân star according to the year stem

Step one: place Lộc Tồn and Bác Sĩ according to the stem

Tử Vi khảo luận places Lộc Tồn by the stem of the birth year and puts Bác Sĩ in the same palace; the book gives these examples: a Giáp year places Lộc Tồn and Bác Sĩ at Dần, a Bính year at Tỵ, a Canh year at Thân[1]. For all ten stems: Giáp at Dần, Ất at Mão, Bính and Mậu at Tỵ, Đinh and Kỷ at Ngọ, Canh at Thân, Tân at Dậu, Nhâm at Hợi, Quý at Tý.

Step two: determine the direction of the cycle

After Lộc Tồn and Bác Sĩ, the remaining stars are placed one per palace in the order above; a dương male or âm female goes forward, an âm male or dương female goes backward[1]. Counting Bác Sĩ, Tướng Quân is the fifth star of the cycle, so it is always four palaces from Lộc Tồn: four palaces forward when the cycle runs forward (Giáp year: from Dần to Ngọ), four palaces backward when it runs backward (Giáp year: from Dần to Tuất).

Step three: determine the position of Tướng Quân

The position of Tướng Quân therefore depends on two things: the Lộc Tồn palace, set by the year stem, and the direction, set by gender together with the yin or yang of the year stem.

Table of Tướng Quân positions by year stem

The table below takes the palace of Lộc Tồn by year stem from Tử Vi khảo luận[1], then derives the Tướng Quân position for the two directions. The "forward" column applies to dương males and âm females; the "backward" column applies to âm males and dương females. Earthly branches are listed in the order of the twelve palaces Tý, Sửu, Dần, Mão, Thìn, Tỵ, Ngọ, Mùi, Thân, Dậu, Tuất, Hợi.

The Lộc Tồn column follows the book; the two Tướng Quân columns are the result of counting four palaces by the rule above.

Why does Tướng Quân fall in two different palaces for the same birth year?

Because the direction of the cycle depends on gender: dương males and âm females go forward, âm males and dương females go backward[1]. For the same year stem, a man and a woman always run in opposite directions.

For example, Giáp is a yang stem: a man (dương male) has Tướng Quân at Ngọ, a woman (dương female) at Tuất. Ất is a yin stem: a man (âm male) has Tướng Quân at Hợi, a woman (âm female) at Mùi. In each pair the two positions mirror each other across the Lộc Tồn palace.

How is Tướng Quân described in Tử Vi books?

Huyền Vi's book Muốn luận đoán đúng số Tử Vi says: "Tướng Quân belongs to Wood and governs authority"; a Life palace holding Tướng Quân marks a person who is brave, proud and fond of holding power, and meeting Thiên Tướng in the same palace brings much authority[2].

Points to note when interpreting Tướng Quân

First, Tướng Quân is an auxiliary star, not a principal star, so it is usually read together with the principal star and the other stars of its palace. Tử Vi khảo luận states that the stars of Tử Vi are only images, personified to express the ideas of the Yijing (Dịch lý), not real stars in the sky shining on a person's fate[1].

Second, knowing only the year stem is not enough to locate Tướng Quân; gender is also needed, since yin or yang already follows from the stem.

How do you check the Tướng Quân position on a chart yourself?

There are three steps. One, find the Lộc Tồn palace from the year stem using the table above. Two, determine whether the stem is yang (Giáp, Bính, Mậu, Canh, Nhâm) or yin (Ất, Đinh, Kỷ, Tân, Quý) and combine it with gender: dương male and âm female go forward; âm male and dương female go backward. Three, count four palaces from Lộc Tồn in that direction; the palace where you stop holds Tướng Quân.

For example, Bính is a yang stem with Lộc Tồn at Tỵ. A Bính man is a dương male, going forward: from Tỵ through Ngọ, Mùi, Thân, Dậu, so Tướng Quân is at Dậu. A Bính woman is a dương female, going backward: from Tỵ through Thìn, Mão, Dần, Sửu, so Tướng Quân is at Sửu. A Đinh woman (yin stem) is an âm female, going forward: Lộc Tồn at Ngọ, Tướng Quân at Tuất. All three results match the table.

Frequently asked questions

If born in January of the solar calendar, which year's stem is used to place Tướng Quân?

Tử Vi calculates the year stem according to the lunar calendar, not the solar calendar. A person born in January of the solar calendar usually falls in the twelfth or first lunar month, so the specific birth date must be checked to know which lunar year it belongs to. For example, born on January 20, 1990 of the solar calendar still belongs to the lunar year Kỷ Tỵ, stem Kỷ, not Canh Ngọ.

Are Tướng Quân and Lộc Tồn always exactly four palaces apart?

Yes, according to the star order in Tử Vi khảo luận, Tướng Quân is the fifth star counting from Lộc Tồn, so it is always four palaces from Lộc Tồn. If placed forward, Tướng Quân is four palaces after Lộc Tồn; if placed backward, it is four palaces before Lộc Tồn. There is no case where Tướng Quân is one, two, or three palaces from Lộc Tồn.

Do you need to know gender to look up the Tướng Quân position?

Yes. The Tướng Quân position depends on the direction of the Lộc Tồn ring, which is set by gender combined with the yin or yang of the year stem. The stem already tells you yin or yang, so you only need to add gender: for a Giáp year, a man has Tướng Quân at Ngọ and a woman at Tuất.
