What Are Tam Kỳ and Lục Nghi?
In Kỳ Môn Độn Giáp, Lục Nghi and Tam Kỳ are two groups of heavenly stems used to locate the six Giáp cycles on the Địa bàn (Earth Plate). Lục Nghi consists of the six stems Mậu, Kỷ, Canh, Tân, Nhâm, Quý; Tam Kỳ consists of the three stems Ất, Bính, Đinh. The book Kỳ Môn Chỉ Quy (part 2) states clearly: the six Giáp originally bear the name Lục Nghi, while Tam Kỳ are precisely Ất, Bính, Đinh.
The key point is that the 60-term Can Chi cycle begins with Giáp Tý and changes to a new Giáp cycle every 10 pairs. The ten heavenly stems contain the character Giáp only six times, so the entire 60 hoa giáp is divided into six Giáp cycles: Giáp Tý, Giáp Tuất, Giáp Thân, Giáp Ngọ, Giáp Thìn, Giáp Dần (according to Quyen1 Nhap mon). These six cycles are not shown directly on the Kỳ Môn plate but are "hidden" in the six Nghi stems. Therefore students of Kỳ Môn often say: the six Giáp hide under Lục Nghi.
Why Are Ất, Bính, Đinh Called Tam Kỳ?
According to the book Thuật số Lạc thư Kỳ Môn Độn Giáp nguyên thủy, the three stems Ất, Bính, Đinh are linked to three qi "fields": Ất corresponds to the Sun, Bính to the Moon, Đinh to the planets orbiting the Sun. These three sources of light were regarded by the ancients as three refined qi, capable of illuminating and dissolving misfortune, hence honored as Tam Kỳ. The same book also states that in the Lạc thư system, the three fields Ất, Bính, Đinh carry qi numbers 8, 7, 6 and are assigned to the stars Thiên Nhậm, Thiên Trụ, Thiên Tâm.
This explanation is more symbolic than strictly astronomical, and there is some inconsistency among books. Some other documents simply define Tam Kỳ as the three stems immediately following Giáp in the stem cycle and considered "precious" in Dịch học thought. This article follows the most common presentation in current Kỳ Môn books: Tam Kỳ = Ất, Bính, Đinh, independent of any specific star-qi assignment.
Under Which Lục Nghi Do the Six Giáp Hide?
This is the core part that beginners must remember. The rule is consistently recorded in Kỳ Môn Chỉ Quy and many Tam Thức documents:
| Giáp Cycle | Hidden Stem (Nghi) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Giáp Tý | Mậu | First cycle of the 60 hoa giáp |
| Giáp Tuất | Kỷ | Second cycle |
| Giáp Thân | Canh | Third cycle |
| Giáp Ngọ | Tân | Fourth cycle |
| Giáp Thìn | Nhâm | Fifth cycle |
| Giáp Dần | Quý | Sixth cycle |
Quick memory aid: the six Nghi stems Mậu, Kỷ, Canh, Tân, Nhâm, Quý follow the six Giáp in exact cycle order. Giáp Tý pairs with Mậu (since Mậu is the fifth stem, immediately after Giáp Tý in the first cycle), Giáp Tuất with Kỷ, Giáp Thân with Canh, Giáp Ngọ with Tân, Giáp Thìn with Nhâm, Giáp Dần with Quý. Kỳ Môn Chỉ Quy also names these six pairs in a similar way.
On the Kỳ Môn plate, the character Giáp is not written. When encountering the stem Mậu in a palace, the student understands that Giáp Tý resides there. Similarly, Kỷ is Giáp Tuất, Canh is Giáp Thân, Tân is Giáp Ngọ, Nhâm is Giáp Thìn, Quý is Giáp Dần. This is why Kỳ Môn is also called Độn Giáp, meaning "hiding Giáp".
Placing Tam Kỳ and Lục Nghi on the Earth Plate by Cục
After determining the Tiết Khí, Nguyên, and whether it is Dương độn or Âm độn, the diviner begins to place Lục Nghi and Tam Kỳ. The book ki mon don giap dieu bi records the rule:
- Dương độn: arrange Lục Nghi forward, arrange Tam Kỳ backward.
- Âm độn: arrange Lục Nghi backward, arrange Tam Kỳ forward.
For example, with Dương độn nhất cục: Giáp Tý Mậu starts at Khảm 1 palace, then Giáp Tuất Kỷ moves to Khôn 2, Giáp Thân Canh to Chấn 3, Giáp Ngọ Tân to Tốn 4, Giáp Thìn Nhâm to Trung 5, Giáp Dần Quý to Càn 6. That is Lục Nghi placed forward. Tam Kỳ is placed backward: Đinh to Đoài 7, Bính to Cấn 8, Ất to Ly 9. The book explains that "backward" here is because Ất, Bính, Đinh correspond to numbers 9, 8, 7, going against the order 6, 7, 8 of Lục Nghi.
With Dương độn nhị cục, Giáp Tý Mậu starts at Khôn 2; tam cục starts at Đoài 3. The remaining cục are inferred similarly. With Âm độn, for example Âm độn cửu cục: Giáp Tý Mậu starts at Ly 9, then Giáp Tuất Kỷ to Cấn 8, Giáp Thân Canh to Đoài 7, Giáp Ngọ Tân to Càn 6, Giáp Thìn Nhâm to Trung 5, Giáp Dần Quý to Tốn 4. Tam Kỳ is placed forward: Đinh to Chấn 3, Bính to Khôn 2, Ất to Khảm 1.
The book Tuyển tập bài viết Tam Thức chọn lọc số 3 emphasizes that Tiết Khí and Nguyên not only determine the time of casting but also decide the direction of movement of Tam Kỳ and Lục Nghi. For the same cục number, if it is Dương độn, placement is forward; if Âm độn, placement is backward. This is a point beginners often confuse.
Why Separate Tam Kỳ from Lục Nghi?
According to Kỳ Môn Chỉ Quy, in practice Tam Kỳ and Lục Nghi are seen as two different layers of information. Lục Nghi indicates where the six Giáp are residing, that is, the positions of the hidden "subjects". Tam Kỳ indicates where the three precious qi sources are, and the convergence of Tam Kỳ with good gates such as Sinh Môn, Khai Môn is considered an auspicious configuration. The book holds that when a good gate meets Tam Kỳ, all matters proceed smoothly as desired.
Conversely, when Tam Kỳ enters the tomb or is overcome by Lục Nghi, ancient books regard it as unfavorable. Kỳ Môn Chỉ Quy has the phrase "tam kì nhập mộ bách vô nhất thành", meaning when Tam Kỳ falls into the tomb, a hundred tasks are hard to accomplish. The same book notes "lục nghi kích hình tối hung", meaning Lục Nghi being punished or overcome is a very bad configuration, and even if it acts as Trực Phù, it should not be used.
The book Tuyển tập bài viết Tam Thức chọn lọc số 1 adds that combinations such as "Ngũ Bất Ngộ" or "Lục Nghi Nhập Mộ" often signal loss, litigation, or gloomy financial conditions. When Tam Kỳ generates and harmonizes with Sinh Môn or a prosperous Tài Tinh, it is a good sign for wealth. These judgments are experiential within the system, not natural laws, so readers should treat them as a traditional interpretation.
How Do Tam Kỳ and Lục Nghi Differ from Other Layers on the Plate?
A complete Kỳ Môn plate has many layers superimposed: Địa bàn, Thiên bàn, Cửu Tinh, Bát Môn, Bát Tướng, and Tam Kỳ Lục Nghi. Among these, Tam Kỳ Lục Nghi is the foundational layer, which must be placed first so that later layers have a basis. The book Tuyển tập bài viết Tam Thức chọn lọc số 3 states that after Lục Nghi and Tam Kỳ are positioned on the plate, the remaining components such as Cửu Tinh, Bát Tướng, Cung, Cửa are then placed onto the Địa bàn.
The book Tuyển tập bài viết Tam Thức chọn lọc số 8 further notes that when interpreting, one should not make immediate judgments based on just one gate pair or one stem pair, but should look at the entire configuration. Tam Kỳ Lục Nghi is only one part of the picture, though a very important one.
Points Where Books Disagree
There are at least two points to clarify to avoid misunderstanding. First, the explanation of why Ất, Bính, Đinh are called Kỳ is not uniform. The book Thuật số Lạc thư Kỳ Môn Độn Giáp nguyên thủy links them to the Sun, Moon, and planets, while many other documents define them only by their position in the stem cycle. Second, the placement of Tam Kỳ in some versions may differ by one palace if the diviner chooses a different starting point. Therefore, when consulting, one should follow one consistent system within the same reading, not mix rules from different books.
This article follows the most common convention in current Kỳ Môn books: Dương độn places Lục Nghi forward and Tam Kỳ backward; Âm độn places Lục Nghi backward and Tam Kỳ forward. This convention matches Kỳ Môn Chỉ Quy and ki mon don giap dieu bi.
