TL;DR: Thiếu Dương is the second auxiliary star in the Thái Tuế cycle, placed in the palace following the Thái Tuế palace in the forward direction; for example, a person born in the year of the Tiger has Thái Tuế in Dần and Thiếu Dương in Mão. According to Vietnamese Tử Vi books: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học both classify Thiếu Dương as Hỏa, the latter adding that it is miếu in Tý and Ngọ; Tử Vi tổng hợp places it in the giải tinh group, with meaning similar to Tứ Đức but weaker in effect; Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư groups Thiếu Dương together with Tử Phù (Death Symbol) and Phúc Đức (Fortune/Virtue) into a tam hợp and considers it a star more intelligent than Thiếu Âm (Young Yin).
What Is the Thiếu Dương Star in Tử Vi?
Thiếu Dương is a minor star belonging to the Thái Tuế cycle, a group of 12 stars placed clockwise across the 12 earthly branch palaces, starting from the palace whose name matches the branch of the birth year. This article presents the placement and the readings of Vietnamese Tử Vi, based on four books: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử, Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc, and Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên sets out the placement: first place Thái Tuế in the palace bearing the branch name of the birth year, then, for both men and women, place the stars clockwise, one per palace, in the order Thiếu Dương, Tang Môn, Thiếu Âm, Quan Phù, Tử Phù, Tuế Phá, Long Đức, Bạch Hổ, Phúc Đức, Điếu Khách, Trực Phù[1].
Thiếu Dương therefore always stands immediately after Thái Tuế, regardless of gender or the yin or yang nature of the birth year. This differs from the Lộc Tồn cycle, where yang men and yin women place clockwise while yin men and yang women place counter-clockwise[1].
Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử presents the same rule and gives an example: if Thái Tuế is in Dần, Thiếu Dương is placed in Mão, in the same palace as the star Thiên Không[2]. As for the element, both books assign Thiếu Dương to Hỏa; Việt Viêm Tử alone adds that Thiếu Dương is miếu in the two palaces Tý and Ngọ[2].
Is Thiếu Dương a "second sun"?
The two books answer differently. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên writes: "Thiếu Dương gặp Nhật sáng sủa đồng cung: rất rực rỡ tốt đẹp. Đây, Thiếu Dương ví như mặt trời thứ hai." (Thiếu Dương in the same palace as a bright Nhật is splendid; here Thiếu Dương is likened to a second sun.)[1] Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, by contrast, writes that Thiếu Âm and Thiếu Dương should not be thought of as a second Nhật and Nguyệt; one should rely on the rule "dương tuyệt gặp âm, âm tuyệt gặp dương là đắc vị" (yang at its end meeting yin, yin at its end meeting yang, is well placed)[2].
Specifically, according to Việt Viêm Tử, Thiếu Dương and Thiếu Âm are the lesser yang and lesser yin qi of Nhật and Nguyệt: when Thái Dương is at its extreme point it needs to meet yin qi in order to be born again, and when Thái Âm is at its extreme point it needs to meet yang qi in order to grow. The book gives an example: Nhật in Tý meeting Thiếu Âm is good, and Nguyệt in Ngọ meeting Thiếu Dương is good[2]. So Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên speaks of a bright Thái Dương in the same palace, while Việt Viêm Tử speaks of Thái Âm at its extreme point.
Which palace holds Thiếu Dương for each birth year?
The table below gives the palace of Thiếu Dương for the 12 birth year branches, together with the two stars that share its tam hợp group in Thiên Lương's division, Tử Phù and Phúc Đức[4]. It is derived directly from the order of the Thái Tuế cycle in Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên.
| Birth year (earthly branch) | Thái Tuế at | Thiếu Dương at | Tử Phù at | Phúc Đức at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tý | Tý | Sửu | Tỵ | Dậu |
| Sửu | Sửu | Dần | Ngọ | Tuất |
| Dần | Dần | Mão | Mùi | Hợi |
| Mão | Mão | Thìn | Thân | Tý |
| Thìn | Thìn | Tỵ | Dậu | Sửu |
| Tỵ | Tỵ | Ngọ | Tuất | Dần |
| Ngọ | Ngọ | Mùi | Hợi | Mão |
| Mùi | Mùi | Thân | Tý | Thìn |
| Thân | Thân | Dậu | Sửu | Tỵ |
| Dậu | Dậu | Tuất | Dần | Ngọ |
| Tuất | Tuất | Hợi | Mão | Mùi |
| Hợi | Hợi | Tý | Thìn | Thân |
Thiếu Dương is always in the palace next to Thái Tuế going clockwise, so knowing the branch of the birth year is enough to know where it falls. The three stars Thiếu Dương, Tử Phù, and Phúc Đức stand four palaces apart, so they are always in tam hợp with one another.
How is the Thiếu Dương Star Placed Step by Step?
Placing Thiếu Dương takes three steps, and Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học record the same principle:
- Identify the branch of the birth year (Tý, Sửu, Dần, Mão, Thìn, Tỵ, Ngọ, Mùi, Thân, Dậu, Tuất, Hợi).
- Place Thái Tuế in the palace bearing that branch name.
- Count one palace clockwise and place Thiếu Dương in the following palace.
For example, a person born in the year of Ngọ: Thái Tuế in Ngọ, Thiếu Dương in Mùi. A person born in the year of Hợi: Thái Tuế in Hợi, Thiếu Dương in Tý. A person born in the year of Thân: Thái Tuế in Thân, Thiếu Dương in Dậu.
Note that this placement applies to the natal chart based on the birth year. When reading annual fortune, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học also presents the method of relocating Thái Tuế according to the current year: place Thái Tuế in the palace bearing the branch of the year being read, then continue placing the remaining 11 stars clockwise[2]. In annual fortune, therefore, the position of Thiếu Dương shifts each year rather than staying fixed as on the natal chart.
What is the Meaning of the Thiếu Dương Star According to Vietnamese Tử Vi Books?
The books do not rank Thiếu Dương among the major stars. Each speaks of it in its own way: one describes its qualities, one classifies it into a group, one sets it in relation to Thiếu Âm and the stars that go with it.
Which group of stars does Thiếu Dương belong to?
Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên puts Thiếu Dương in one entry with Thiếu Âm and describes them as "Thông minh, vui vẻ, hòa nhã, nhân hậu, từ thiện. Giải trừ những bệnh tật, tai họa nhỏ." (intelligent, cheerful, gentle, kind, charitable; removing illness and minor misfortune)[1] Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc groups Thiếu Âm and Thiếu Dương among giải tinh, stating that their meaning is like that of Tứ Đức but their effect is weaker and they carry no meaning of curing illness[3].
The two books thus differ on exactly one point: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên says Thiếu Dương removes illness and minor misfortune, while Tử Vi tổng hợp says it has no meaning of curing illness. Tử Vi tổng hợp also adds a condition of position: Thái Dương and Thiếu Dương are better when placed in the daytime palaces[3].
When Thiếu Dương travels with Hồng Loan and Đào Hoa
Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương has its own reading. The book divides the Thái Tuế cycle into four tam hợp stances, in which Thiếu Dương stands with Tử Phù and Phúc Đức, and sets Thiếu Dương against Thiếu Âm: Thiếu Dương has moved ahead of Thái Tuế, while Thiếu Âm stands in the tam hợp behind Thái Tuế[4].
According to the book, Thiếu Dương always has Hồng Loan and Đào Hoa "xốc nách" (holding it up under the arms), while Thiếu Âm in many cases does not; the book therefore treats Thiếu Dương as the cleverer wing and Thiếu Âm as somewhat honest and disadvantaged[4]. In another section Thiên Lương himself writes that for yang birth years Hồng Loan stands in the Thiếu Âm position[4]. Worked out with the placement rules of Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên, Đào Hoa always lies inside the Thiếu Dương tam hợp, while Hồng Loan falls inside it only for the six yin birth years (Sửu, Mão, Tỵ, Mùi, Dậu, Hợi)[1].
Also according to Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư, because Thiếu Dương is entangled with Thiên Không, the three or four đức stars step in to counsel it, while Thiếu Âm has only Long Đức; the book calls this a balancing scale between the two sides[4]. In terms of position this holds: Thiên Đức, Nguyệt Đức, and Phúc Đức all lie inside the Thiếu Dương tam hợp, while Long Đức lies inside the Thiếu Âm tam hợp.
Is Thiếu Dương a good star?
The answer depends on the book. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên describes Thiếu Dương in favorable words and says it removes minor misfortune[1]. Tử Vi tổng hợp places it among giải tinh but with a weaker effect than Tứ Đức[3]. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học considers it well placed only where Thái Âm needs yang qi[2]. Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư sees Thiếu Dương as a clever, sensitive stance that is prone to overreach and needs the reminder of Tứ Đức[4].
None of the four books treats Thiếu Dương as a star that decides destiny; it is always weighed together with the other stars on the chart.
What Do the Four Books Say About Thiếu Dương?
The table below gathers what each book records about Thiếu Dương, to show where they agree and where they differ:
| Book | Element, position | What the book records about Thiếu Dương |
|---|---|---|
| Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên (Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang) | Hỏa | Intelligent, cheerful, gentle, kind, charitable; removes illness and minor misfortune; in the same palace as a bright Nhật it is likened to a second sun[1] |
| Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học (Việt Viêm Tử) | Hỏa, miếu in Tý and Ngọ | The lesser yang qi of Nhật and Nguyệt; not to be taken as a second Nhật or Nguyệt; Nguyệt in Ngọ meeting Thiếu Dương is good[2] |
| Tử Vi tổng hợp (Nguyễn Phát Lộc) | Better in the daytime palaces | A giải tinh, similar in meaning to Tứ Đức but weaker, with no meaning of curing illness[3] |
| Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư (Thiên Lương) | Forms a tam hợp with Tử Phù and Phúc Đức | A stance against the yin-yang of the birth year, clever and sensitive, prone to overreach; Đào Hoa, Thiên Không, and Kiếp Sát stand in the way and Tứ Đức gives the reminder[4] |
Why Do Books Interpret the Same Star Differently?
There are at least three reasons why one book reads Thiếu Dương differently from another.
The first is that each book looks at the star from one side. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học looks at it through the yin and yang qi of Nhật and Nguyệt, so it records both the element and the miếu positions[2]; Tử Vi tổng hợp sorts by function, so it places Thiếu Dương among giải tinh[3].
The second is a difference of focus. Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư sets Thiếu Dương beside Thiếu Âm and writes that by the law of yin and yang the two sides are "khác biệt hẳn nhau như nước với lửa, kim với mộc" (as different as water and fire, metal and wood); that reading puts the weight on the stance of the whole tam hợp group rather than on each star separately[4].
The third is the level of detail. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên gives Thiếu Dương and Thiếu Âm only a short entry of a few lines[1], so points such as the miếu positions or the tam hợp stances have to be found in the other books.
Nhật Nguyệt's Suggestions for Looking Up the Thiếu Dương Star
When reading a chart, Thiếu Dương should be handled in three layers. The first layer is position: determine which palace holds Thiếu Dương by counting one palace clockwise from Thái Tuế. The second layer is relationship: see whether that palace has Hồng Loan, Đào Hoa, or Thiên Không, since these are the stars Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư mentions when reading the pair Thiếu Dương and Thiếu Âm. The third layer is the yin and yang standing of the Sun and Moon on the chart: if Thái Âm is at its extreme point, Thiếu Dương may be read in the direction of compensation as Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học suggests.
In short, Thiếu Dương is a minor star that is easy to place and easy to look up, but not easy to interpret. Its value lies not in the name itself but in whom it stands beside and when it stands in the yin and yang pattern of the whole chart.
