What Is Tam Nguyen Cuu Van? Why 180 Years Divide Into Three Nguyên and Nine Vận, and How Vận 9 (2024 to 2043) Differs From Vận 8

Tam Nguyên Cửu Vận là gì? Vì sao 180 năm chia thành ba nguyên, chín vận và vận 9 (2024 tới 2043) đổi khác vận 8 ra sao
TL;DR: Tam Nguyen Cuu Van is the Huyền Không Phi Tinh way of dividing a 180-year cycle into three nguyên (Thượng, Trung, Hạ), each 60 years and containing three vận of 20 years. In each vận one of the cửu tinh holds the đương lệnh role as vượng tinh, neighbouring stars become sinh khí, and stars past their time become thoái khí or tử khí. Vận 8 (2004 to 2023) had Bát Bạch as vượng tinh; vận 9 (2024 to 2043) moves to Cửu Tử, so the same house can be favourable in one vận and weaker in the next. This is a reference frame of the Huyền Không school, not an absolute judgement of fortune, and schools differ on how vận are divided.

What is Tam Nguyen Cuu Van and where does it come from?

Tam Nguyen Cuu Van is the time-division system of the Huyền Không Phi Tinh school, in which the full 180-year cycle of khí vận is split into nine vận of 20 years each, and every three vận form one nguyên. The book Địa lý Nguyên Không Pháp Giám by Liên Trì tiên sinh stresses the role of the central palace number 5 and the cửu cung diagram as the root for reading khí; and according to the Flying Star Feng Shui page on Wikipedia, time is divided into 20-year cycles, each cycle being one vận (Yun), and one grand cycle comprises nine vận, 180 years in total.

The basis of this division is the Lạc Thư diagram, a nine-cell square holding the numbers 1 to 9. Each number is tied to a quẻ in the bát quái, a hành in ngũ hành, a direction, a span of time and many other attributes. When time moves into a new vận, the ruling number changes, and the whole method of reading directions and khí trường changes with it.

How are the three nguyên divided?

Thượng Nguyên covers vận 1, 2, 3. Trung Nguyên covers vận 4, 5, 6. Hạ Nguyên covers vận 7, 8, 9. Each nguyên lasts 60 years, and the three together make exactly 180 years. This naming appears in many phong thủy texts, and Địa lý Nguyên Không Pháp Giám also uses the thượng nguyên, trung nguyên, hạ nguyên system to define long mạch and thủy khẩu.

One point to note is that the vận transition marker is not fully consistent across texts. Most texts use round calendar years, for example vận 8 from 2004 to 2023 and vận 9 from 2024 to 2043. In practice, however, many masters set the transition at the Lập Xuân solar term, the start of the meteorological year in the Can Chi calendar, usually falling around 4 February. So a house completed in late January 2024 may still be classed as vận 8 if counted by Lập Xuân, but as vận 9 if counted by the start of the calendar year. This article notes both conventions and does not claim either is absolutely correct.

Why are 180 years divided into three nguyên and nine vận?

The basis lies in the cửu tinh moving in a closed cycle on the Lạc Thư diagram, each star holding the leading role for a set span of time. When a star is đương lệnh, its khí is strongest; when its time ends, that khí fades and passes to the next star. Nine stars times 20 years gives 180 years, exactly one full round from star 1 to star 9 and back again.

Địa lý Nguyên Không Pháp Giám, when discussing cửu cung cửu tinh, says the cửu tinh are placed in the cửu cung and their lý khí acts like a spirit, and it treats the central palace number 5 as the source of all geographical effects. This view explains why vận 5, though belonging to the Thổ hành and tied to no quẻ in the hậu thiên bát quái, is still considered a strongly dominant vận, often linked to great upheaval.

How does the Huyền Không Đại Quái school divide vận differently?

Not every school divides evenly into 20-year vận. The book Ung Dung Trung Quốc (Vietnamese translation) presents the nhị nguyên school's method, in which 180 years are divided by bát quái, each quẻ ruling 20 years, but the remaining 20 years of the central palace are handled differently: the first 10 years are sent to the Tốn quẻ and the last 10 to the Càn quẻ, so Tốn and Càn each hold 30 years instead of 20.

Under this division, Thượng Nguyên covers khí 1, 2, 3, 4; Hạ Nguyên covers khí 6, 7, 8, 9. Compared with the even tam nguyên division, the difference centres on khí 6. The tam nguyên method places khí 6 in Trung Nguyên, while the nhị nguyên method places khí 6 in Hạ Nguyên. Both agree that khí 7, 8, 9 are auspicious in the Hạ Nguyên period; the dispute is only over khí 6. Ung Dung Trung Quốc holds that khí 6 is transitional, its fortune unclear, so both views can be retained. This shows that one theoretical system can still hold several divisions, and students should know which convention they follow.

Table of the nine 20-year vận: start year, end year and ruling star

The table below lists the nine vận by the most common division in Huyền Không texts, with the star's hành, its quẻ and its position on the Lạc Thư. The year markers use round calendar years.

This table matches the vận table on the Flying Star Feng Shui page on Wikipedia, which lists vận 1 from 1864 to 1883, vận 8 from 2004 to 2023 and vận 9 from 2024 to 2043, with the corresponding hành, quẻ and direction.

How do vượng tinh, sinh khí, thoái khí and tử khí change roles with each vận?

In each vận, the đương lệnh star is called the vượng tinh or lệnh tinh and holds the leading role. Stars that support it, or that fly to a direction in a generating relationship, are seen as sinh khí, rising khí. Stars whose time has passed fall into thoái khí, suy khí or tử khí. An old oral formula is quoted: đương vận thì vượng, tướng lai thì sinh, kỷ quá thì suy, cửu quá thì tử. In other words, a star's role is not fixed but depends on the running vận.

The Flying Star Feng Shui page on Wikipedia presents the same principle: in vận 8, stars 8, 9 and 1 are considered timely, with star 8 the most vượng and regarded as the vượng quý star, while stars 9 and 1 belong to the sinh khí group; the remaining six stars fall into the thoái khí, sát khí or tử khí groups. Note that a star truly expresses its timely quality only when the corresponding object or area in the palace is activated correctly.

Table of vượng, sinh, thoái and tử khí for each star in vận 8 and vận 9

The table below compares the roles of the nine stars in the two most recent vận. This arrangement follows the common Huyền Không Phi Tinh convention, taking the đương lệnh star as vượng, the next two stars as sinh khí, and the rest as thoái khí and tử khí according to their distance from the cycle's peak.

This arrangement is the article's convention, based on the principle that the đương lệnh star is vượng and the next two in the cycle are sinh khí. Some more detailed texts further distinguish tiến khí, suy khí and tử khí by level, so the table is a reference only, not the single truth.

How does vận 9 (2024 to 2043) differ from vận 8?

The fundamental difference is the ruling star. Vận 8 has Bát Bạch, hành Thổ, quẻ Cấn, direction Northeast as its head. Vận 9 has Cửu Tử, hành Hỏa, quẻ Ly, direction South. When vận 9 begins, the Cửu Tử star becomes the đương lệnh star and carries its own traits, often linked to the growth of technology, artificial intelligence and social change. This is a trend interpretation, not a certain forecast.

On directions, vận 8 strengthened khí in the Northeast, while vận 9 shifts the focus to the South. A similar example is given: when vận 8 was current, number 8 sat in the Northeast so the Northeast's khí vận was strong; in vận 9, the focus moves with the position of number 9 on the Lạc Thư.

On ngũ hành qualities, Bát Bạch belongs to Thổ, leaning to stability, accumulation, real estate and material foundations. Cửu Tử belongs to Hỏa, leaning to spread, explosion, light, media and speed. The shift from Thổ to Hỏa changes how khí trường is read: combinations with Hỏa become more sensitive, combinations with Thổ lose some force. The Flying Star Feng Shui page on Wikipedia, listing the cửu tinh qualities, notes that Cửu Tử relates to the heart, blood, small intestine, tongue and eyes, and when timely governs great success, promotion, marriage and happy events.

Why can the same house be good in one vận and bad in the next?

Because a house's tinh bàn is built from the vận the house belongs to, plus its facing and sitting directions. When the vận changes, the star entering the central palace changes, and the whole cửu tinh distribution across the nine palaces changes. A direction that once received the vượng tinh may receive thoái khí or tử khí, and vice versa. The Flying Star Feng Shui page on Wikipedia states clearly: to build a tinh bàn you need the date the house was put into use and its direction; the house's vận does not change unless the building is heavily renovated.

This explains why a house built in 2005, belonging to vận 8, keeps its vận 8 tinh bàn until a major renovation, even though outside time has moved into vận 9. In other words, the house's vận and the time's vận are two different layers. In reading, one usually compares the house's nguyên vận tinh bàn with the thời vận tinh bàn of the year, month, day and hour to see which khí layer acts on which.

Applying Tam Nguyen Cuu Van in practice

The most common use is to identify which directions receive vượng khí or sinh khí in the current vận, then place doors, rooms, living areas or important objects accordingly. The Flying Star Feng Shui page on Wikipedia notes that energy in a building can be drawn on by placing people or living things in the palace with good khí according to the tinh bàn. Palace division is done by overlaying the cửu cung grid on the floor plan, and the position of a door or room is a cell in that grid, which may or may not match the direction the door or room faces.

The principle of finding places of sinh vượng khí to use and avoiding places of suy tử is also set out. This book distinguishes two kinds of tinh bàn: the nguyên vận tinh bàn, the native star of the vận the house belongs to, and the thời vận tinh bàn, the stars flying by year, month, day and hour. Fortune is read from the interaction of the two, combined with the actual sơn thủy terrain.

One example: in vận 8, a house with a nguyên vận tinh bàn facing Northwest and sitting Hợi, which belongs to Thổ; if the year's thời vận tinh bàn brings Nhất Bạch, belonging to Thủy, to the Northwest palace, we have the combination Nhất Bạch đáo hướng. In vận 8, Bát Bạch is the vượng tinh and Nhất Bạch is sinh khí, but since Thủy controls Thổ, this combination must be weighed carefully; one cannot conclude fortune or misfortune just from which star reached which palace.

Limits to know when using this system

Tam Nguyen Cuu Van is a time reference frame, not a fixed verdict on a house or a person. As noted, the vận transition may be counted by Lập Xuân or by the start of the calendar year, and the Huyền Không Đại Quái school divides vận unevenly rather than in 20-year blocks. Texts also disagree on whether khí 6 belongs to Trung Nguyên or Hạ Nguyên. Students should state clearly which convention they use, note it down, and avoid turning a theoretical system into absolute claims about wealth, health or destiny.

Frequently asked questions

Tam Nguyên Cửu Vận có phải là 180 năm chia đều thành chín vận 20 năm không?

Yes, in the most common Huyền Không division, 180 years are split into nine vận of 20 years each, and every three vận form one nguyên of 60 years. However, not every school divides evenly: the nhị nguyên method in Ung Dung Trung Quốc gives the Tốn and Càn quẻ 30 years each by handling the central palace's remaining 20 years differently, so the even 20-year split is a convention rather than a universal rule.

Vận 9 bắt đầu từ ngày nào, mùng 1 tháng 1 năm 2024 hay tiết Lập Xuân?

There are two conventions. Most texts use the round calendar year and start vận 9 on 1 January 2024. In practice, many masters set the transition at the Lập Xuân solar term, the start of the meteorological year in the Can Chi calendar, usually around 4 February. So a house completed in late January 2024 may still be classed as vận 8 under the Lập Xuân convention and as vận 9 under the calendar-year convention.

Vì sao một ngôi nhà đang tốt lại có thể kém đi khi sang vận mới?

Because a house's tinh bàn is built from the vận the house belongs to, plus its facing and sitting directions. When the vận changes, the star entering the central palace changes and the whole cửu tinh distribution shifts, so a direction that once received the vượng tinh may receive thoái khí or tử khí, and vice versa. The house's own vận stays the same until a major renovation, so its native tinh bàn is read together with the current thời vận tinh bàn.
