What Are Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo in Tử Vi, and How Are They Placed Based on Văn Khúc?

TL;DR: Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo are a pair of auxiliary stars in Tử Vi (Vietnamese astrology), and according to Vietnamese Tử Vi books they govern bằng sắc and seals and credentials. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên (Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang) and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học (Việt Viêm Tử) both record: Thai Phụ starts at the Tý hour in the Ngọ palace, Phong Cáo starts in the Dần palace, and both are counted forward to the birth hour; the method using Văn Khúc as the marker (Thai Phụ two palaces in the forward direction, Phong Cáo two palaces in the backward direction) gives the same result. On the five elements the two books differ: Tử Vi áo bí records both as Thổ, while Tân biên records Thai Phụ as Kim đới Thổ and Phong Cáo as Thổ đới Thủy. This is a method of interpretation within Tử Vi, not a conclusion about a person's life.

What Are Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo in Tử Vi?

Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo are two minor stars that form a pair, which Vietnamese books abbreviate as the Thai Cáo set. This article presents their placement and meaning as taught in Vietnamese Tử Vi, based on Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử, Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc and Tử Vi nghiệm lý by Thiên Lương. Việt Viêm Tử assigns both stars to the Earth element and writes: "These two stars stand for credentials and seals of office"[2]. Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang records different elements, Thai Phụ as Metal with Earth and Phong Cáo as Earth with Water, and sums up the pair as favorable for examinations and the pursuit of rank, "governing credentials"[1].

How Are Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo Placed by Birth Hour?

The book Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang records the first placement method based entirely on birth hour[1]. Specifically:

  • Thai Phụ: Starting from the Ngọ palace as the Tý hour, count forward to the birth hour, and wherever it stops, place Thai Phụ in that palace.
  • Phong Cáo: Starting from the Dần palace as the Tý hour, count forward to the birth hour, and wherever it stops, place Phong Cáo in that palace.

The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học also records a similar placement method, with the same starting points: Thai Phụ starts from Ngọ, Phong Cáo starts from Dần, both counting forward according to birth hour[2].

For example: a person born in the Mão hour (the fourth hour in the 12-hour cycle). Counting forward from Ngọ: Ngọ is Tý, Mùi is Sửu, Thân is Dần, Dậu is Mão. So Thai Phụ is placed at Dậu. Counting forward from Dần: Dần is Tý, Mão is Sửu, Thìn is Dần, Tị is Mão. So Phong Cáo is placed at Tị.

This placement method is purely based on birth hour, independent of birth date or gender. This is a difference from many other minor stars such as Tam Thai, Bát Tọa, Ân Quang, Thiên Quý, which are placed by birth date.

How Are Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo Placed Based on Văn Khúc?

The second placement method uses the palace of the Văn Khúc star as a reference point. The book Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên states: "Based on the palace of Văn Khúc, two palaces after is Thai Phụ, two palaces before is Phong Cáo", with the example that when Văn Khúc is in Thìn, Thai Phụ is placed in Ngọ and Phong Cáo in Dần[1]. The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học uses the words "before" and "after" the other way round (two palaces before is Thai Phụ, two palaces after is Phong Cáo), yet its example follows the same count: when Văn Khúc is in the Mùi palace, Thai Phụ is placed in the Dậu palace and Phong Cáo in the Tị palace[2]. In the examples of both books, Thai Phụ stands two palaces from Văn Khúc in the forward direction and Phong Cáo two palaces in the backward direction.

Note the direction of counting. In both books Văn Khúc is placed by birth hour by starting from the Thìn palace as the Tý hour and counting forward to the birth hour; the star that starts from the Tuất palace and counts backward is Văn Xương. The Ngọ palace lies two palaces forward of Thìn and the Dần palace two palaces behind it, so the two methods give the same result for every birth hour: the second is simply another way of remembering the first.

The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học has a mnemonic verse on star placement that includes the line "Ngọ Thai, Dần Cáo, thuận đường chớ sai" (Thai at Ngọ, Cáo at Dần, go forward without fail)[2]: Thai Phụ starts from Ngọ, Phong Cáo starts from Dần, and both count forward.

It follows from the rule that the two stars are always four palaces apart: they always stand in a tam hợp (trine) relation to each other and never share a palace. In Tử Vi nghiệm lý, Thiên Lương remarks that for people born in a dương (yang) hour, Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo "set out from Văn Khúc and enter the tam hợp of Văn Xương"[3].

What Is the Meaning of Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo When Occupying a Palace?

According to Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, the two stars meeting Binh, Hình, Tướng, Ấn form a fitting configuration, "like the axes, banners and seal of a marshal"[2]. The book also records the case of Tướng and Cáo occupying the Mệnh palace together with Hồng Loan and Hoa Cái: such a person is described as succeeding early and holding military authority, or, on the civil side, supervising government offices, keeping archives, or working in fields concerned with promotions and the awarding of honors. In its summary of star sets, the book says Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo govern "credentials and seals, government offices, libraries and records".

In Tử Vi tổng hợp, Nguyễn Phát Lộc groups Phong Cáo and Thai Phụ with Đường Phù and writes that the three stars "have the same meaning, standing for credentials, merits, medals and authority, but are not as strong as Quyền or Ấn"[4]. The book adds that when Thai Phụ or Đường Phù meets Tuần, Triệt or Thiên Hình the effect is "not too heavy", comparable to missing a promotion or a medal.

Regarding combinations, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học states that Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo greatly favor Tướng and Ấn but strongly dislike meeting Cự Môn and Thiên Đồng. When Thai Cáo shares the Mệnh palace with Khôi and Xương, the book reads it as "đăng khoa chiếm đầu vị", that is, passing the examinations in first place[2].

Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên mentions Thai Cáo in three other places. Its section on occupations says that Cơ, Nguyệt, Đồng, Lương meeting Tả, Hữu, Xương, Khúc, Thai, Cáo means "working as a minor official, a village head or a canton chief". Its section on period readings glosses Thai, Cáo as "having a title and post". And a verse on Nhật and Nguyệt in Thìn and Tuất lists Phụ and Cáo among the stars that bring "fame in a single stroke"[1]. The words "Thai, Tọa" in this book's passages on civil office, military office and skill in painting refer to Tam Thai and Bát Tọa, not to Thai Phụ.

Why Is Thai Cáo Considered a Star of Academic Distinction?

Thai Cáo is tied to academic distinction because the books all give the pair the meaning of credentials: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên says the two stars favor examinations and the pursuit of rank, and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records the configuration of Thai Cáo sharing the Mệnh palace with Khôi and Xương. The books do not read a star in isolation: the same Thai Cáo meeting Khôi, Xương, Tướng, Ấn is treated by Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học as a configuration of academic distinction, while meeting Cự Môn or Thiên Đồng is what the book says the two stars strongly dislike.

How Do the Books Compare With Each Other?

On placement, Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học agree: Thai Phụ starts from Ngọ, Phong Cáo starts from Dần, counting forward by birth hour; the method based on Văn Khúc gives the same result, and the two books differ only in the words "before" and "after". On the elements, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học assigns both stars to Earth, while Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên gives Thai Phụ as Metal with Earth and Phong Cáo as Earth with Water. On meaning, Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên adds a trait of character, "self-satisfied, boastful, fond of fame and of outward form"[1]; Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học stresses seals and military command when the pair meets Binh, Hình, Tướng, Ấn; Tử Vi tổng hợp regards the two stars as weaker than Quyền or Ấn.

What Are Nhật Nguyệt's Suggestions When Interpreting Thai Cáo?

Nhật Nguyệt's suggestion: To find Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo on a chart, the birth hour is all that is needed: look it up in the table above, or find Văn Khúc and count two palaces forward for Thai Phụ and two palaces backward for Phong Cáo. When reading the books, look at the pair together with the stars the books name alongside it (Văn Xương, Văn Khúc, Thiên Khôi, Thiên Việt, Tướng Quân, Quốc Ấn) and compare the books one by one, since each records the elements and shades of meaning differently. This is how the art of Tử Vi reads the pair, not a conclusion about whether a person will pass examinations or succeed.

Frequently asked questions

What are Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo in Tử Vi?

Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo are a pair of auxiliary stars in Tử Vi (Vietnamese astrology), usually shortened to Thai Cáo. The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records that both belong to Thổ (Earth) (Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên records Thai Phụ as Kim đới Thổ, Phong Cáo as Thổ đới Thủy) and govern bằng sắc, seals and credentials, meaning documents confirming academic rank, office and authority. According to this book, the two stars greatly favour Tướng and Ấn, and being in the same palace as Khôi and Xương at Mệnh is the pattern of placing first in examinations.

How are Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo placed according to Văn Khúc?

According to Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học, after determining the palace of Văn Khúc, count two palaces forward to place Thai Phụ, and count two palaces backward to place Phong Cáo. For example, if Văn Khúc is at Mùi then Thai Phụ is at Dậu and Phong Cáo is at Tị. The method based on birth hour (Thai Phụ starting from Ngọ, Phong Cáo starting from Dần, counting forward to the birth hour) gives the same result, because Văn Khúc starts from Thìn and is also counted forward according to the birth hour.

With which stars, when Thai Cáo meets them, is it considered a pattern of academic distinction?

The book Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records that Thai Phụ and Phong Cáo greatly favour meeting Tướng and Ấn, while greatly disliking meeting Cự Môn and Thiên Đồng. When Thai Cáo is in the same palace as Khôi and Xương at the Mệnh palace, it is interpreted as passing the examination at the top. The book Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên records that the two stars are favourable for examinations and the pursuit of office and rank.
