TL;DR: According to Vietnamese Tử Vi texts, Hỷ Thần is the eighth star in the Lộc Tồn group, also called the Bác Sĩ group, which has 12 stars: Lộc Tồn is placed according to the heavenly stem of the birth year, then from that palace one counts to the eighth palace, clockwise for yang male and yin female, anticlockwise for yin male and yang female. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên describes Hỷ Thần as joyfulness, favourable for marriage; Tử Vi tổng hợp pairs Hỷ Thần with Thiên Hỷ to form the Song Hỷ set within the group of auspicious joy stars. As for the five elements, Tân biên records Fire, while Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học records Wood.
What Is the Hỷ Thần Star in Tử Vi?
According to Vietnamese Tử Vi books, Hỷ Thần is an auxiliary star in the Lộc Tồn ring, also called the Bác Sĩ ring, a set of 12 stars placed from the palace that holds Lộc Tồn. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang describes this star as cheerful, bringing welcome good luck and favouring weddings[1]; Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học by Việt Viêm Tử says it governs good luck and cheerfulness[3]. On placement, Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học writes: "Lộc-tồn bao giờ cũng đồng cung với sao Bác-Sỹ nên khi an Lộc-tồn, không nên quên Bác-sỹ" (Lộc Tồn always shares a palace with Bác Sĩ, so when placing Lộc Tồn one should not forget Bác Sĩ)[3], and then lists the stars of the ring in a fixed order that includes Hỷ Thần.
Hỷ Thần must be distinguished from Thiên Hỷ, another star that also governs joy but is placed in a completely different way. The book Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc groups both Thiên Hỷ and Hỷ Thần among the "joy stars," meaning stars that signal good news when they meet love stars or marriage stars[2]. The Hỷ Thần of Tử Vi is also not the "hỉ thần" of Bát Tự (the element favourable to the day master) nor the Hỷ Thần used in day selection; these only share a name.
How Is the Hỷ Thần Star Placed in the Bác Sĩ Ring?
The principle of placing the Bác Sĩ ring
This ring has 12 stars, one per palace, starting from the palace that holds Lộc Tồn. Bác Sĩ always shares the palace of Lộc Tồn; from the next palace on, Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên[1] and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học[3] give the same order: Lực Sĩ, Thanh Long, Tiểu Hao, Tướng Quân, Tấu Thư, Phi Liêm, Hỷ Thần, Bệnh Phù, Đại Hao, Phục Binh, Quan Phủ. Counting Bác Sĩ, Hỷ Thần is the eighth star of the ring, seven palaces from the Lộc Tồn palace along the placement direction.
How to determine the position of Lộc Tồn
The position of Lộc Tồn is determined by the heavenly stem of the birth year. Tử Vi áo bí cites an old verse: "Giáp Dần, Ất Mão, Bính Mậu Tỵ, Đinh Kỷ Ngọ, Canh Thân, Tân Dậu, Nhâm Hợi, Quý Lộc Tý"[3]. This means a person born in a Giáp year places Lộc Tồn at the Dần palace, an Ất year at Mão, a Bính or Mậu year at Tỵ, a Đinh or Kỷ year at Ngọ, a Canh year at Thân, a Tân year at Dậu, a Nhâm year at Hợi, and a Quý year at Tý.
After determining Lộc Tồn, the practitioner counts along the order of the ring to find Hỷ Thần. The counting direction depends on gender and on the yin-yang of the heavenly stem of the birth year: yang males (men born in Giáp, Bính, Mậu, Canh, Nhâm years) and yin females (women born in Ất, Đinh, Kỷ, Tân, Quý years) count forward; yin males and yang females count backward. Both Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên[1] and Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học[3] state this. The example in Áo bí: with Lộc Tồn at Tỵ and forward placement, Hỷ Thần is at Tý[3].
Table of Hỷ Thần positions by birth year
The table below gives the positions of Lộc Tồn and Hỷ Thần for each heavenly stem of the birth year, calculated by the rule above: with forward placement Hỷ Thần is seven palaces ahead of Lộc Tồn, with backward placement seven palaces behind. The word in brackets shows whether that column applies to men or women.
| Stem of birth year | Lộc Tồn | Hỷ Thần, forward placement | Hỷ Thần, backward placement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giáp | Dần | Dậu (male) | Mùi (female) |
| Ất | Mão | Tuất (female) | Thân (male) |
| Bính, Mậu | Tỵ | Tý (male) | Tuất (female) |
| Đinh, Kỷ | Ngọ | Sửu (female) | Hợi (male) |
| Canh | Thân | Mão (male) | Sửu (female) |
| Tân | Dậu | Thìn (female) | Dần (male) |
| Nhâm | Hợi | Ngọ (male) | Thìn (female) |
| Quý | Tý | Mùi (female) | Tỵ (male) |
What Is the Meaning of the Hỷ Thần Star in Vietnamese Tử Vi Books?
The joy-star group and its use in marriage reading
The book Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc lists the pair Thiên Hỷ and Hỷ Thần first among the "joy stars" (sao hỷ tín), alongside the pairs Thanh Long with Lưu Hà, Thiên Mã with Tràng Sinh, and several other star sets[2]. According to this book, lucky stars in general carry the meaning of good news when they go with love stars or marriage stars; it writes that when love stars such as Đào Hoa and Hồng Loan combine with joy stars, a marriage is easily decided[2].
Tử Vi tổng hợp also notes that reading marriage requires combining several kinds of stars: joy stars, love stars, marriage stars, and even wealth-loss stars that may appear in a marriage period[2]. Hỷ Thần alone is not enough to conclude; it must be set within the whole chart.
Hỷ Thần in relation to other stars
Tử Vi áo bí by Việt Viêm Tử, discussing the Long Trì Phượng Các star set, mentions Hỷ Thần: "Nếu cùng với Hỷ-thần, Riệu Y, Hình, Kỵ hội họp là đồng tính chất, tăng thêm hỷ sự, đài các nguy nga, văn chương siêu việt" (meeting Hỷ Thần, Thiên Riêu, Thiên Y, Thiên Hình and Hóa Kỵ, the set is of like nature and adds happy events, grandeur and literary excellence)[3]. Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên likewise records that Hỷ Thần meeting Long Trì and Phượng Các is "rất rực rỡ tốt đẹp" (very bright and fine), favouring examinations, the pursuit of rank, weddings and childbirth[1]. In its own entry on Hỷ Thần, Áo bí says the star is well placed in the Quan Lộc palace[3].
The difference between Hỷ Thần and Thiên Hỷ
These two stars are often confused because of their similar names. The basic difference lies in how they are placed:
- Hỷ Thần belongs to the Bác Sĩ ring, placed from the position of Lộc Tồn and the heavenly stem of the birth year.
- Thiên Hỷ is placed by the earthly branch of the birth year, always in the palace opposite Hồng Loan. Tử Vi áo bí states: "Căn cứ sao Hồng-Loan ở cung nào, tìm cung xung chiếu của cung có sao Hồng-Loan để an Thiên-hỷ"[3].
Tử Vi tổng hợp joins the two stars into one set called Song Hỷ and writes that this set announces good news about property when it goes with wealth stars[2]; Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học also calls Hỷ Thần meeting Thiên Hỷ the song Hỷ set[3]. On the element of Hỷ Thần the two books differ: Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên gives Fire[1], Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học gives Wood[3].
What Points Should Be Noted When Reading Hỷ Thần?
Do not absolutize the meaning of a single star
The book Tử Vi tổng hợp by Nguyễn Phát Lộc emphasizes the principle of interconnection among stars: "Sự đồng cung kết hợp những sao thành bộ, làm cho ý nghĩa giữa những sao trong bộ mạnh mẽ và trực tiếp hơn, giúp người xem số kết luận mạnh dạn hơn"[2]. This means Hỷ Thần only shows its full meaning within a suitable star set, and should not be judged in isolation.
Influence of the palace position
The books read Hỷ Thần according to the palace it occupies. Tử Vi áo bí biện chứng học says Hỷ Thần is well placed in the Quan Lộc palace[3]. Tử Vi tổng hợp writes that lucky star sets, Thiên Hỷ and Hỷ Thần among them, usually bring good opportunities when they sit in or shine on Mệnh, and bring luck within a period when they sit in that period's palace[2].
Hỷ Thần is not among the rescuing stars
The section on rescuing stars in Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên names Hóa Khoa, Thiên Giải, Địa Giải, Giải Thần, Lộc Tồn, Hóa Lộc, Bác Sĩ and some others, and does not name Hỷ Thần[1]. By this book there is no basis for treating Hỷ Thần as a star that resolves a difficult period.
Nhật Nguyệt's Suggestion
To find which palace Hỷ Thần occupies on a chart, one needs the heavenly stem of the lunar birth year and the gender: look up Lộc Tồn by the stem, then count forward or backward as in the table above, or draw the chart with Nhật Nguyệt's Tử Vi tool, where the Lộc Tồn ring is already placed. The meanings given in this article are the words of each book and should be taken as a reference perspective, not a conclusion about destiny or the future.
