Quick answer

Where does na jia (receiving stems) come from?

The method of receiving stems is usually attributed to Jing Fang of the Han dynasty (78 to 37 BCE). The historian Ban Gu recorded that Jing Fang was skilled at divining hexagrams according to the I Ching, and a divination book attributed to him describes the method of receiving stems, that is, the way of attaching the lines of a hexagram to the stems and branches of the calendar. Attributing the whole system to one individual is a traditional way of tracing origins, not a definitive conclusion of the historical record.
