In the structure of a chart, Tỷ Kiên becomes the dụng thần only when, in phù ức, it is chosen to support a weak self, or when thông quan requires it to connect the flow, or when điều hậu wants it to provide warmth, or in bệnh dược it is regarded as the remedy for the illness. Bi Jian is like a full sibling sharing the same father and mother, supporting one another; Rob Wealth is like a half-sibling or a friend with rivalry, who may contend over interests.
It should be stated clearly that distinguishing Bi Jian from Rob Wealth by polarity is the common approach, but the degree of emphasis varies between schools. Some schools stress the polarity difference and separate the two gods entirely in character. Other schools hold that both are the day master's element, that the difference is only a shade of tone, and that in many reading situations they can be grouped together as a "self-supporting faction." For students, this means do not use the difference between Bi Jian and Rob Wealth as a rigid key for every chart.
What characteristics does Bi Jian carry, and which relationships does it correspond to?
Bi Jian carries the meanings of identity, equality and mutual support. It symbolizes the self, full siblings, close friends, colleagues, and people of the same aspiration. In essence, Bi Jian expresses independence, self-reliance, personal will and a competitive spirit.
People with strong Bi Jian are usually confident, decisive, have their own views, and are not easily swayed. They like to stand on their own feet, do not want to depend on others, and have a striving will and a strong sense of responsibility. But if Bi Jian is too strong and not well controlled and transformed, they can be conservative, stubborn, hard to cooperate with, and prone to conflict.
In destiny reading, Bi Jian is used to read relationships with siblings, friends and colleagues. Its position tells you which stage or field that relationship is tied to.

How does Bi Jian interact with the other Ten Gods?
Bi Jian and the Wealth God
The Wealth God represents money, property, wife or husband (wife for a male chart, husband for a female chart according to some schools), and the father in some schools. The relationship between Bi Jian and the Wealth God is one of control: Bi Jian controls the Wealth God, because Bi Jian matches the Day Stem, and the Wealth God is the element controlled by the Day Stem.
When Bi Jian is too strong, it controls the Wealth God, leading to difficulty holding onto money, uncontrolled spending, or being robbed or cheated. In marriage, a male chart with strong Bi Jian may run into trouble with his wife because the Wealth God representing the wife is being controlled. But when the self is weak, Bi Jian instead helps the person be strong enough to carry the Wealth God, meaning enough strength to earn and manage property. Distinguishing whether Bi Jian is a useful god or an unfavorable god is the condition for a correct judgment.
The chain of reasoning here needs to be stated clearly, because this is where students often skip a step. Step one, determine strength or weakness. Step two, if the self is weak, Bi Jian belongs to the self-supporting side and its controlling of Wealth is the price paid for the day master to stand firm, so mild control of Wealth is not the main problem. Step three, if the self is strong, Bi Jian is an unfavorable god, and now its control of Wealth becomes the main problem, requiring the Output Gods to guide the flow or Officer and Seven Killings to restrain it. The same controlling relationship, two opposite conclusions, and the distinguishing point lies in strength or weakness, not in the controlling relationship itself.
Bi Jian and Officer and Seven Killings
Officer and Seven Killings represent power, position, career, and also discipline and restraint. Officer and Seven Killings control Bi Jian, because Officer and Seven Killings are the element that controls the day master's element. When Bi Jian is strong and Officer and Seven Killings come to control and transform it, this is a good structure, called Bi Jian meeting Officer and Seven Killings to transform into authority. Such a person uses the will and decisiveness of Bi Jian combined with the discipline and principles of Officer and Seven Killings to succeed in career, and is usually a leader with authority who knows how to organize and manage.
Conversely, if Officer and Seven Killings are too weak or absent, strong Bi Jian with no control and transformation makes the person obstinate, hard to discipline, unwilling to follow rules, and prone to legal trouble or conflict with superiors.
One easily overlooked point deserves attention: "transforming into authority" is not an automatic result of having Officer and Seven Killings. The condition is that Officer and Seven Killings must be strong enough to control the strong Bi Jian. If Officer and Seven Killings are much weaker than the mass of Bi Jian, then instead of controlling and transforming, they are suppressed by Bi Jian, and the result is not authority but defiance of discipline. This is why we must compare the strength of the two sides rather than just counting whether Officer and Seven Killings are present.
Bi Jian and the Resource God
The Resource God represents knowledge, learning, protection, and the mother. The relationship between Bi Jian and the Resource God is one of generation: the Resource God generates Bi Jian. Therefore the Resource God is the source, the foundation that creates Bi Jian. When both are strong, such a person usually has good health, is protected, has a solid foundation of knowledge, and has a mother or close relative giving active support. But if both are too strong with no Wealth God or Officer and Seven Killings to balance, the person easily becomes dependent, lacks motivation to strive, or is too rigid about their own knowledge.
Bi Jian and the Output Gods
The Output Gods represent talent, self-expression, language and creativity. Bi Jian generates the Output Gods, so Bi Jian is the source of energy that nourishes and drives talent to show itself. People with a good combination of Bi Jian and the Output Gods usually have real talent, know how to express themselves, are creative and communicate well, and can succeed in art, media, or work requiring independence and creativity. Conversely, if Bi Jian is strong while the Output Gods are weak or absent, the person has talent but finds it hard to express, leading to wasted potential.

Personality analysis
When analyzing personality through Bi Jian, we need to look at its degree of strength or weakness in the overall chart, and that degree is measured first and foremost by the month command itself. Bi Jian appearing many times across the pillars usually indicates a strong personality, independent, hard to sway, with a tendency to decide everything themselves and a dislike of being imposed upon. At work, they suit independent or leadership roles better than passively working under someone. Bi Jian in the hour pillar may correspond to a career in later life built by one's own efforts; in the month pillar it is usually tied to a career in a competitive environment.
Predicting luck periods
In a major luck period (a ten-year cycle) or an annual pillar (each year), when Bi Jian appears or becomes stronger, the following events may be predicted:
- New friends, new partners, or an expansion of social relationships.
- If Bi Jian is an unfavorable god, that year may bring disputes, loss of property through friends, or fierce competition at work.
- If Bi Jian is a useful god, that year may bring benefactors who are friends or siblings helping in difficult times.
- For people in business, encountering a Bi Jian luck period as an unfavorable god calls for caution in partnerships, avoiding being overshadowed by a partner or having market share contested.
- In marriage, a male chart encountering strong Bi Jian in a major luck period or annual pillar may run into trouble with his wife, or friends may interfere in family matters.
One more step needs to be added that the earlier sections have not touched: when the chart has already been identified as a following structure, the direction of reading luck periods reverses. If the chart follows another element rather than the day master's element, then encountering a Bi Jian luck period is not support but being pulled out of the structure being followed, and this is usually a period of upheaval. Conversely, if the chart follows the day master's own element, a Bi Jian luck period is a favorable one. A critical perspective and cautions when reading Bi Jian
Do not make mechanical inferences. Determining whether Bi Jian is good or bad depends on the chart as a whole, the balance between elements, the position of Bi Jian, and its interaction with the other Ten Gods. A Bi Jian regarded as bad in one chart may be good in another. And as noted in the section on the four ways to choose the useful god, the Tử Bình schools themselves do not agree on the priority order among support and restraint, mediation, climate adjustment and disease and remedy, so two masters may give two different pieces of advice on the same chart while both are correctly following their own system.
Each school also has a different way of interpreting the degree of influence of Bi Jian. Some schools emphasize the role of Bi Jian in determining the useful god, while others stress the interaction between Bi Jian and other factors such as the gods and spirits and the na yin. Students need a flexible approach, comparing multiple sources and observing reality.
BaZi in general and Bi Jian in particular are not absolute prophetic tools. This is a body of knowledge based on experience, helping people understand themselves better, their strengths and weaknesses, and from there find a suitable direction for development. Using Bi Jian in destiny reading should be seen as a reference tool for self-improvement, not for blind fortune-telling or surrendering to fate.
