Does Indirect Wealth being favorable or unfavorable depend on strength/weakness and the Yong Shen?
Indirect Wealth is the element controlled by the Day Master, differing from Direct Wealth, so its nature is dispersing and active. When the body is strong, it becomes favorable: it drains excess qi, opens the path for wealth and fortune, and can become the Yong Shen if the Yue Ling and structure allow. When the body is weak, it becomes unfavorable: it adds a burden of depletion, easily causing mental strain with little gain. In Fu Yi, when the body is strong, Indirect Wealth is used to restrain; when the body is weak, support must come first. Tong Guan is only used when Indirect Wealth is blocked by Officer and Seven Killings in between. Tiao Hou intervenes when the chart is imbalanced in temperature, Bing Yao selects medicine according to the flaw, while Cong Ge negates Fu Yi and can turn Indirect Wealth into the Yong Shen even when the body is weak. How are the Ten Gods and the Talent Star determined?
The Ten Gods is a system of ten relationships of generation and control between the day stem and the remaining stems and branches in the chart. These ten relationships divide into five pairs, each pair consisting of one Direct and one Indirect, distinguished by whether they share or differ in Yin and Yang with the day stem. Those five pairs are: the Friend and the Rob Wealth (same element as the day stem), the Eating God and the Hurting Officer (the element generated by the day stem), the Direct Wealth and the Talent Star (the element controlled by the day stem), the Direct Officer and the Seven Killings (the element that controls the day stem), and the Direct Seal and the Indirect Seal (the element that generates the day stem).
The Talent Star is the element controlled by the day stem and sharing Yin and Yang with the day stem. The Direct Wealth is also the element controlled by the day stem, but differing in Yin and Yang. For example, the Jia Wood day stem (Yang Wood) controls Earth. Wu Earth (Yang Earth) shares Yin and Yang with Jia, so it is the Talent Star. Ji Earth (Yin Earth) differs in Yin and Yang from Jia, so it is Direct Wealth. This is the point of difference from the common understanding that the Talent Star is the element generated by the day stem. In fact, the element generated by the day stem is the Eating God and the Hurting Officer, not Wealth. The correct understanding is: Wealth is what one can control, that is, what one can manage in material terms.
It is called the Talent Star because it carries an expansive, unconstrained character, unlike the Direct Wealth, which carries an orthodox, stable character. In traditional fate analysis, Direct Wealth represents fixed salary, the official wife for a male chart, and steady income. The Talent Star represents irregular income, risky investment, the father for a male chart, and unofficial emotional relationships. Both are Wealth, both are what the day stem controls, but one follows the framework and the other is unrestrained. Some BaZi texts have a way of distinguishing close to folk speech: Direct Wealth is like the first wife, the salary, legitimately titled assets; the Talent Star is like the second wife, commission money, profit from speculation. When the four pillars contain both, this book holds that one must consider which side is stronger to know which source of wealth dominates.
One point needs distinguishing when speaking of the Talent Star: it is not only a single character on the heavenly stem. Some BaZi texts present two different cases. The first case is residual qi Wealth: taking the example of a Geng or Xin day master born in the Dragon month, within the first seven days after the Qingming solar term, the Dragon branch still retains the residual qi of Yi Wood, and Yi Wood is precisely the Wealth of Geng and Xin, so during that period wealth can still be generated; after that stage, in the Dragon there remains only Wu Earth, Yi Wood and Gui Water, and the residual qi Wealth is no longer present. The second case is mixed qi Wealth: it appears in the Dragon, Dog, Ox, and Goat months, that is, months whose earthly branches belong to the four storehouses; for example, a Ren or Gui day master born in the Dog month, in the Dog are contained Wu Earth, Xin Metal and Ding Fire, and if Ding Fire reveals through the heavenly stems it is called mixed qi Wealth, while if it does not reveal, the Wealth is in a hidden state, and to generate it one must wait for a luck cycle or annual pillar to draw out the qi. This book also classifies the case of a Geng or Xin day master born in the Snake month as mixed qi Wealth, with the condition that to truly generate wealth the Wealth star must reveal through the heavenly stems, or the earthly branches must contain the characters Monkey, Rooster, Pig, or Rat in support.
Here there is a point where books read differently. One reading emphasizes that only the Talent Star revealed on the heavenly stem is what clearly manifests, while the Talent Star hidden in the earthly branches must wait for a luck cycle to draw out the qi before it can be used. Another reading holds that the Talent Star hidden in the four storehouses still has value, and there are even cases where hidden and not revealed is more durable because it is not seen and seized by Friends and Rob Wealth. Some BaZi texts lean toward the first reading when discussing mixed qi Wealth, but also acknowledges that the energy hidden in the storehouse does not disappear but concentrates, waiting for a chance to erupt. The reader should know both readings before applying either.
How is the useful god chosen, and why are there many ways to choose?
The useful god is the element chosen to rebalance the chart. The favorable god is the element that supports the useful god, and the unfavorable god is the element that breaks the useful god. The useful god is not the strongest god in the chart, but the god most needed to bring the chart back to a state of balance. Once the month order, strength, and chart structure are established, we have enough data to choose the useful god. There are four common ways to choose the useful god, and they do not always give the same result.
The first way is support and restraint, that is, supporting a weak self and restraining a strong self. If the day master is weak, the useful god is the element that supports the day master, usually the Seal or the Friend and Rob Wealth. If the day master is strong, the useful god is the element that restrains the day master, usually Wealth, Officer and Seven Killings, or Eating God and Hurting Officer. This is the most commonly used method in practice. For example, a Jia Wood day master born in the Monkey month loses the order and also has no roots in the earthly branches, so the self is weak, and the useful god is Water or Wood to support it. If Jia Wood is born in the Tiger month, takes the order, and also has Cat and Pig, then the self is strong, and the useful god is Metal or Earth to restrain it.
The second way is mediation, used when two elements are in balanced mutual control, taking the intermediate element as a bridge. For example, if Metal and Wood are at war and both are strong, then Water mediates because Metal generates Water and Water generates Wood, so that Metal no longer directly controls Wood. Mediation does not aim to make one side stronger, but to reduce conflict between the two sides. This method is usually used when the chart has two clearly opposing elements and neither can overpower the other.
The third way is climate adjustment, choosing the useful god by season. Born in a winter too cold, Fire is needed to warm; born in a summer too hot, Water is needed to cool. Climate adjustment does not care whether the day master is strong or weak, but cares whether the climate of the chart is extreme. A chart born in the Rat month, if the whole chart is cold Water and Metal, then whether the day master is strong or weak, Fire may still be needed to harmonize. This is the point where support and restraint and climate adjustment can conflict: support and restraint may say the useful god is Water, while climate adjustment says the useful god is Fire.
The fourth way is disease and medicine, finding the most serious fault in the chart and taking the element that cures exactly that spot. The disease may be an element too strong causing blockage, or an element too weak causing a gap, or a combination of clash and control that throws the chart off balance. The medicine is the element capable of curing exactly that fault. Disease and medicine differs from support and restraint in that it does not look at the day master first, but looks at the whole chart first, finds the most painful spot, and only then considers the day master.
What role does the Talent Star play in the chart?
The Talent Star is the element controlled by the day stem and sharing Yin and Yang with the day stem. In terms of qi, it is what the day stem can control but which does not lie entirely within the framework. Therefore, the Talent Star is usually associated with resources coming from outside, not following a fixed route: investment, business, unexpected opportunities, broad social relationships. In terms of relationships, the Talent Star represents the father for a male chart, and for both genders it represents friends, partners, unofficial relationships.
In terms of talent, the Talent Star shows the ability to seize opportunities, sharpness toward the market, and a tendency to act quickly rather than wait. In terms of personality, the Talent Star shows generosity, expansiveness, little fussing over small details, but also a tendency to overspend. In terms of finance, the Talent Star shows uneven income, which can come quickly and go just as quickly, unlike the more stable Direct Wealth.
However, all these characteristics only mean something when placed in the context of the strength of the day master and the chart structure. A strong Talent Star with a weak self is a burden, because the day master does not have enough strength to control that resource. A strong Talent Star with a strong self is a resource, because the day master has enough strength to exploit it. A weak Talent Star with a strong self may be a missed opportunity, or a resource not yet exploited in the right way. The same Talent Star, but its role changes completely depending on strength.
One more easily overlooked point needs stating: if the chart has already fallen into the following structure, then the Talent Star no longer holds the role it has in support and restraint. When the useful god is the overpowering element, a Talent Star going against that direction can become an unfavorable god, regardless of whether it is itself strong or weak. This is a direct consequence of the following structure step above, and is why one cannot analyze the Talent Star while skipping the step of determining whether the chart follows or not.
Only a strong self can carry Wealth, so what about a weak self meeting much Wealth?
Only a strong self can carry Wealth. If Wealth is abundant but the self is weak, that is the state of abundant wealth with a weak self, appearing wealthy on the surface but in reality unable to keep it. Some BaZi texts record the words of ancient documents: Wealth is the source that nourishes life, people cannot lack Wealth, but Wealth should not be too abundant, because too much loses clarity. Also according to this book, when Wealth is extremely strong and the self is weak, the outcome is not prosperity but hardship because of money: whatever one has, one spends that much, even excessive worry leading to illness. The ancient document cited by the book also gives a warning: abundant Wealth with a weak self, meeting an Officer luck cycle in a land of strong Wealth, Wealth seizes the qi, Officer controls the self, not only no fortune is generated but disasters on all sides. Put another way, when the self is already weak and both Wealth and Officer luck appear together, wealth and position not only fail to support that person but drain their strength, even bringing disaster.
It must be stated clearly that this is the phrasing of one school, and it has a counterweight. Some BaZi texts devote a whole section to discussing abundant wealth with a weak self for male charts, and also describes it as a state of wealth and fortune accompanied by challenges, reflecting the correlation between personal energy and the flow of wealth luck, health, and relationships. In some BaZi texts, two examples are given to illustrate that good fortune does not depend on whether the self is strong or weak: one case had a strong self but a Rob Wealth strongly rooted breaking the useful god, so that the whole life did not attain wealth; the other case, though weaker in self, when it entered a Fire luck cycle followed Wealth and became enormously rich. In other words, a strong self is a favorable condition for carrying Wealth, but it is not the only condition deciding wealth or poverty. The overall structure and luck cycles are what decide.
Some BaZi texts also have a noteworthy sentence in the same direction: a weak self that cannot overcome wealth, because of possessions gives rise to disaster. This book recounts the case of a person with layer upon layer of Friends and Rob Wealth who then met a Friends and Rob Wealth luck cycle, leading to loss of wealth and imprisonment. This is an example showing that the Wealth star needs protection, and the accompanying taboo is meeting a Friends and Rob Wealth luck cycle.
What structure is formed when the Talent Star meets much Friends and Rob Wealth?
When the Talent Star meets much Friends and Rob Wealth, it forms a wealth-contesting structure, and if Officer and Seven Killings are lacking to control the Friends and Rob Wealth, the harm is even clearer. Friends and Rob Wealth are friends, brothers, competitors, of the same element as the day stem, so they also control Wealth. Some BaZi texts cite the words of ancient documents: Talent revealed, fears meeting Friends and Rob Wealth, controls the father and controls the wife. When a Friends and Rob Wealth luck cycle appears, a person with the Talent Star often loses money because of friends, or suffers financial loss because of emotional matters. Therefore, people who grow rich thanks to the Talent Star greatly avoid Friends and Rob Wealth luck cycles, because wealth and reputation can vanish in an instant.
Why is the harm clearer when Officer and Seven Killings are lacking? In the network of generation and control, Officer and Seven Killings are the element that controls the day stem, and in this situation it plays the role of subduing Friends and Rob Wealth. In some BaZi texts, there is an account of a male chart born in 1952: the day master Wu Earth was born in the Pig month, and although it did not hold the month order, the three branches Dragon, Dog, and Dragon all belong to Earth, and moreover the hour pillar had Bing Fire generating support, so the self was strong because of abundant Friends and Rob Wealth. The useful god chosen was Jia Wood, that is, Seven Killings. Thanks to the Seven Killings being subdued, this person could stand firm in society, escaping the state of brothers killing one another and wealth scattering. When meeting an Officer and Seven Killings luck cycle, the subject was promoted and prospered. Only when entering a Friends and Rob Wealth luck cycle did this book apply the phrase overcoming Wealth, but note must be taken to understand it correctly: the Friends and Rob Wealth luck cycle overcoming wealth occurs when Friends and Rob Wealth have already been subdued and are no longer fierce.
In the case where Officer and Seven Killings are absent from the chart, or their strength is too thin, Eating God and Hurting Officer become the next layer of protection. Some BaZi texts cite the words of ancient documents: Because Friends and Rob Wealth are strong and prosperous, forming excess, one takes Eating God and Hurting Officer to drain the prosperous qi of Friends and Rob Wealth as the useful god. The mechanism is that Eating God and Hurting Officer reduce the prosperous qi of Friends and Rob Wealth, then generate wealth, transforming surplus energy into products and money. In other words, when there is no Officer and Seven Killings to control, we switch to using Eating God and Hurting Officer to drain.
Some BaZi texts also record the parallel taboo: the Wealth star fears most a Friends and Rob Wealth luck cycle. According to this book, if the Wealth star meets a Friends and Rob Wealth luck cycle, there can occur loss of money, loss of capital in business, or being exploited by others. This is where the two books speak in the same direction, so it can be regarded as a fairly solid point in the tradition.
How does the Talent Star interact with the other Ten Gods?
The Talent Star does not operate independently but sits within a network of generation and control with the other gods. The four most important interactions are with the Seal star, with Officer and Seven Killings, with Friends and Rob Wealth, and with Eating God and Hurting Officer.
With the Seal star, the Talent Star controls the Seal because Wealth controls the Seal according to the principle of the five elements. The Seal star is the element that generates the day stem, representing nourishment, learning, and protection. When the Talent Star is too strong, it suppresses the Seal star, making the person inclined toward pragmatism, valuing immediate results over long-term accumulation of knowledge. In some cases, this leads to dropping out of school midway to go into business, or little concern for family relationships and elders.
With Officer and Seven Killings, the Talent Star generates Officer because Wealth generates Officer according to the principle of the five elements. Officer and Seven Killings are the element that controls the day stem, representing responsibility, discipline, and rank. When the Talent Star is strong and Officer and Seven Killings are strong enough, the person has the drive to strive for career, knowing how to use money to build position. When the Talent Star is strong but Officer and Seven Killings are weak, the person may only care about making money without concern for social position, or use money to buy fame in an improper way. When discussing Wealth generating Officer, this connection is also recorded in some BaZi texts, which is why Wealth and Officer in analysis often go together like form and shadow.
With Friends and Rob Wealth, the Talent Star is controlled by Friends and Rob Wealth because Friends and Rob Wealth share the element of the day stem, and the day stem controls Wealth, so Friends and Rob Wealth also control Wealth. Friends and Rob Wealth represent friends, brothers, and competition. When Friends and Rob Wealth are strong and the Talent Star is weak, the person is easily robbed of money by friends and partners, or loses in business because of fierce competition. When Friends and Rob Wealth are weak and the Talent Star is strong, the person can bring into play the ability to make money with little obstruction.
With Eating God and Hurting Officer, the Talent Star belongs to the same group because Eating God and Hurting Officer are the element generated by the day stem, while the Talent Star is the element controlled by the day stem. Both are qi directed outward, but Eating God and Hurting Officer are expression, while the Talent Star is control. When Eating God and Hurting Officer and the Talent Star are both strong, the person can turn talent into money, often succeeding in creative fields, commerce, and services. When all three are strong without a Seal star or Officer and Seven Killings to restrain them, the person may spend extravagantly, not knowing how to preserve achievements.
What are the conditions for enjoying the Talent Star?
The core condition is a strong self, and not being subject to punishment, not being broken by Friends and Rob Wealth. An ancient document says that if the self is strong and there is a Talent Star, and it is not subject to punishment, and Friends and Rob Wealth appear in the pillars, then when meeting a Wealth luck cycle one can generate great wealth, indicating long life, becoming an entrepreneur and holding the top position in a company. In the opposite direction, this book also states clearly: a weak self meeting a Talent Star in the month stem is easily subject to loss of wealth because of the opposite sex, and also easily entangled in romantic troubles. That means if the self is weak and the Talent Star is strong, the person may meet disaster because of money or because of women. This phrasing matches the state of abundant wealth with a weak self discussed in the section above.
This sentence should be read with one caveat. This is the condition of one line of ancient documents cited by the book, not an invariable rule for every chart. Some BaZi texts themselves give examples showing that there are charts with a strong self that still are not rich because Rob Wealth breaks the useful god, and charts with a weaker self that become enormously rich thanks to following Wealth. Therefore, the condition of a strong self should be understood as a favorable condition, not the only mandatory condition.
What does the Talent Star mean in different positions in the Four Pillars?

This table only means something after the previous steps have been gone through. The position tells which period of life the Talent Star affects, but the degree of effect is still decided by strength, chart structure, and the useful god. A Talent Star in the Hour Pillar in a following-structure chart will not carry the same meaning as a Talent Star in the Hour Pillar in a strong-self chart using Wealth as the useful god.
One more point needs stating where books read differently, already raised in the section on determining the Ten Gods: the Talent Star revealed on the heavenly stem and the Talent Star hidden in the earthly branches are not read the same by every book. The first direction holds that only revealed clearly manifests, while hidden must wait for a luck cycle to draw out the qi. The second direction holds that hidden in the four storehouses still has value, and there are even cases where hidden is more durable because it is not seen and seized by Friends and Rob Wealth. When analyzing position, the reader should consider both possibilities instead of assuming one direction.
What mistakes should be avoided when analyzing the Talent Star?
The first mistake is viewing the Talent Star in absolute terms. Whether the Talent Star is good or bad depends on the whole chart, on the strength of the day master, on the chart structure, and on the useful god. A person with a strong Talent Star but a weak self may face more difficulties than a person with a moderate Talent Star but a strong self. One should not conclude based only on the presence of a single god.
The second mistake is ignoring the month order. The month order is the first measure of strength, and every god is governed by the season of birth. If the month order is not determined, we do not know whether the Talent Star takes the order or loses it, and therefore do not know whether it is truly strong or weak.
The third mistake is ignoring chart structure, including two cases easily overlooked: Establishing the Salary and the Yang Blade. Because these two cases attach directly to the month branch, ignoring them will make the strength measurement wrong from the start, and every step after that will be off as well.
The fourth mistake is confusing ordinary weak self with the following structure. This is the mistake with the heaviest consequence, because these two directions give two opposite sets of useful gods. The analyst needs to check carefully whether the day master has roots or not, whether there is a Seal generating support or not, before deciding to go by support and restraint or by following.
The fifth mistake is ignoring the disagreement between the schools. The four ways of choosing the useful god cannot be ranked for every chart, and the schools do not agree on the order of priority, nor on the threshold for determining the following structure. If one does not know which school the writer follows, one does not know on what basis their conclusions rest.
The sixth mistake is ignoring luck cycles. The ability to earn and manage money is not fixed but changes with the major luck cycles and annual pillars. When a major luck cycle or annual pillar meets the Talent Star, that may be a favorable time for investment and business, but it may also be a time of easy loss if one is not careful. The same Talent Star, but in one major luck cycle it is an opportunity, and in another it is a risk.
The seventh mistake is forgetting that the Wealth star does not stand alone. Some BaZi texts record that the Wealth star needs protection from Friends and Rob Wealth luck cycles, while some BaZi texts emphasize that Wealth generates Officer, so Wealth and Officer usually must be considered together. Analyzing the Talent Star while leaving out Officer and Seven Killings, Friends and Rob Wealth, and Eating God and Hurting Officer is cutting away most of the necessary information.
BaZi is not a tool of absolute prediction, but a system of knowledge that helps people understand themselves better, and from there make suitable choices in life.
