Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bùi Xuân Đính writes in the book Bách khoa thư làng Việt cổ truyền that the saying "đầu năm mua muối, cuối năm mua vôi" (buy salt at the start of the year, buy lime at the end of the year) was at first simply a reminder to people going to the Tet market not to forget, not to buy too little of the things every household needs during the Tet days, and salt and lime are two such things. Later that reminder became a folk belief, and then was kept as a custom.
