In the folklore of the Quang region, bánh tổ is associated with the legend that it appeared from the end of the 18th century during the reign of King Quang Trung, when Quảng Nam people made a chewy cake that lasted long, wrapped in dried banana leaves and offered to the Tây Sơn army as provisions. This legend is still much debated, with insufficient historical documents to confirm the exact date and origin.
