What is Jian Lu?
Jian Lu (Chinese characters 建祿) is a configuration in BaZi Four Pillars. "Jian" means to establish or set up; "Lu" means prosperity or official salary. This configuration forms when the day stem (Day Master) meets its own Lu position in the month branch. In other words, the Day Master attains Lu at the birth month, hence it is also called the Jian Lu configuration.
In the BaZi system, each Heavenly Stem has a branch considered its Lu, meaning the place where that stem is nourished and fully expressed. When this position falls in the month branch, the Day Master is considered to have a solid root, a strong self, self-reliance, and to enjoy prosperity from family or from its own efforts.
Why is it called Jian Lu?
The word "Jian" means to establish, while "Lu" refers to salary, prosperity, and nourishment. When the Day Master attains Lu at the birth month, the ancients likened it to a person receiving a salary created by their own position, not borrowed from outside. Thus this configuration is often associated with self-reliance, self-made prosperity, and a foundation in family or tradition.
How is Jian Lu used in destiny analysis?
In destiny analysis, Jian Lu indicates that the Day Master has a root and is not weak. People with this configuration are often described as capable, self-determined, disliking dependence, and able to build careers through their own strength. However, the configuration is only one part of the chart. Other factors such as Wealth, Officer, Resource, Output, and the balance of the Five Elements must also be considered for a full reading. When the self is strong but lacks Wealth and Officer to regulate, Jian Lu may shift toward competition, conservatism, or difficulty in growth.
Distinguishing Jian Lu from easily confused terms
Jian Lu differs from Bi Jian and Jie Cai. Bi Jian and Jie Cai are Ten Gods indicating a same-element relationship with the Day Master, while Jian Lu is a configuration determined by the Lu position in the month branch. A chart may have Bi Jian or Jie Cai without being Jian Lu, and vice versa.
Jian Lu also differs from Month Command or Month Branch. Month Command refers to the month branch in general, while Jian Lu specifically refers to the case where the month branch is exactly the Lu of the Day Master. Additionally, it should be distinguished from other configurations such as Jian Yin, where the month branch is the Resource of the Day Master.
