Cải lương took shape in the South of Vietnam around the beginning of the 20th century, building on the đờn ca tài tử (amateur chamber music) movement. Many researchers take 1918, linked to the play Kim Vân Kiều by thầy Năm Tú's troupe in Mỹ Tho; some opinions give 1916 or 1919. The piece Dạ cổ hoài lang by Cao Văn Lầu was created on the night of the full moon of the 8th lunar month in 1919 in Vĩnh Hương village, Thạnh Hòa district, Bạc Liêu province (now part of Cà Mau province).
