Ngô Sĩ Liên in the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư raised questions about the credibility of the turtle deity story in the tale, while Trần Trọng Kim in the Việt Nam sử lược classified the tales of the early nation-building period as truyện tục truyền (folk legends), not fully believing them to be true.
