The Nine Luminary Stars
The Cửu Diệu are nine stars that, in Vietnamese folk belief, take turns presiding over a person's year, returning to the same star every nine years. Men and women follow two different orders, so at the same age a man and a woman usually fall under different stars.
Read across the row: the star's name, whether it is graded auspicious or not, the meaning folk tradition attaches to it, then two age columns. These are traditional Vietnamese ages (tuổi mụ): you count as 1 at birth and gain a year each Tết, not on your solar birthday. Find your traditional age in the column for your gender to see the star for that year. Since the cycle repeats every nine years, ages above 100 simply subtract a multiple of nine.
This is folk belief presented as cultural reference. A year landing on a star considered inauspicious predicts nothing about what will happen to anyone.
