Quick answerWas Khúc Thừa Dụ the first person to win independence for Vietnam?
Not exactly. Khúc Thừa Dụ was put forward by the people as Tiết độ sứ (military governor) in 906, marking the transfer of governing power into local hands, but in name he still held an office of the Tang court. This was the opening step toward self-rule, not a declaration of full independence. It was only with Ngô Quyền after the Bạch Đằng victory in 938 that the period of Chinese rule truly came to an end.
