The old histories do not record Kiều Công Tiễn's specific motive. According to Việt Nam sử lược, Kiều Công Tiễn was a subordinate general of Dương Đình Nghệ who killed his lord to seize power. According to Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư, this happened in the spring, in the third month of the year 937. Afterwards Kiều Công Tiễn asked Nam Hán for help, which shows he was not strong enough to stand on his own against the reaction of domestic forces.
