Quick answer

Is Xử Thử a festival or a day for offerings?

No. Xử Thử is a solar term, not a festival. The book Tuế thời quảng ký only records three natural signs of this term: hawks capturing birds for sacrifice, heaven and earth turning stern, and rice ripening, without recording a separate offering custom. In Vietnam, this term is mainly used to monitor weather and harvests.
